Is That Enough?
IBM (NYSE:IBM) just signed a $240 million deal with Together AI to build an Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA)-powered AI inference cluster on IBM Cloud, announced August 11. Together AI's chief revenue officer Kai Mak says demand is so strong the cluster will sell out two to three months before it even goes live. That kind of confidence from a partner is a good sign for a company whose shares have been under pressure this year. But a single deal, however sizable, still has to answer the bigger question: can IBM turn scattered growth pockets into a real growth story?IBM Landed A $240M AI Deal. Is That Enough? Bull Case: A Fresh Bet On AI Demand The agreement covers an initial cluster built with roughly 2,000 Nvidia Blackwell 300 chips, using the HGX B300 systems and Spectrum-X Ethernet networking, located in the US. Together AI's platform lets businesses run open-source models like DeepSeek, MiniMax and Kimi more cheaply than closed alternatives, and the startup was valued at $8.3 billion in July. Mak told Reuters the company expects full offtake well before the cluster is ready for service, a sign that inference, not just training, is becoming a serious growth lever for IBM Cloud. That momentum echoes what is already showing up in IBM's numbers. Software revenue rose 5% year-over-year in the most recent quarter, with Red Hat up 11%, the clearest evidence that IBM's shift toward higher-margin, recurring business lines is working. Longer term, CEO Arvind Krishna has said quantum computing could have a "measurable impact" on IBM's top and bottom lines as soon as 2028 or 2029, and he has pointed to the end of the 2030s as when that opportunity could be worth a trillion dollars. Add in a dividend raised for 31 straight years and covered about 2.5 times by expected free cash flow, and the long-term case has more legs than the stock price suggests. Bear Case: The Growth Problem The Deal Doesn't Solve None of that changes what happened in the quarter ended June 30, 2026: revenue grew just 1% to $17.2 billion, prompting IBM to cut its full-year guidance from more than 5% growth to a range of 4% to 5%. Consulting revenue was flat, infrastructure fell 7%, and the IBM Z mainframe line dropped 42%, the kind of decline that offsets a lot of AI headlines. Even the software growth investors lean on is decelerating, down from 11% growth in the prior quarter to 5% now. The dividend tells a similar story of caution: April's increase was a single penny per quarter, from $1.68 to $1.69, hardly the raise of a company brimming with confidence. Shares have fallen 33% from their 52-week high of $332.46, a slide that began after preliminary numbers badly missed expectations, and even after recovering some ground, the stock remains down 19% for the year. Story Continues What The Market Is Signaling Hedge fund ownership fell from 63 funds to 59 in the most recent quarter, a modest pullback suggesting some institutional investors are trimming rather than piling in. Short interest sits at just 2.62% of float, which points to little organized skepticism about the stock. IBM trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 19.12 as of August 12, a multiple that assumes moderate growth rather than a rapid turnaround. Where This Leaves Investors The Together AI deal shows IBM Cloud can win real infrastructure business in the AI inference race, and the software segment and quantum roadmap give patient investors something to hold onto. Still, the mainframe decline, flat consulting revenue, and a guidance cut earlier this year show the core business isn't firing evenly yet. While we acknowledge the potential of IBM as an investment, we believe certain AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk. The cluster will use Nvidia HGX B300 systems with Blackwell processors and is planned to be IBM Cloud's first dedicated large scale AI inference platform. The infrastructure is expected to be operational by Q1 2027 and is aimed at enterprise customers seeking cost efficient, open source AI capabilities. This kind of AI infrastructure build out highlights a wider set of stocks working on the hardware and cloud backbone for enterprise AI. These may be worth a closer look through 57 AI infrastructure stocks.NYSE:IBM Earnings & Revenue Growth as at Aug 2026 International Business Machines is a large US IT company with a US$222.6b market cap that provides integrated solutions and services across major global regions. Its role as a long standing enterprise technology provider gives it a base of corporate clients that could be relevant for large scale AI infrastructure on IBM Cloud. Beyond the headline: 1 risk and 4 things going right for International Business Machines that every investor should see. How does this AI cluster agreement fit into IBM's broader AI and cloud strategy? This agreement positions International Business Machines as the cloud provider behind Together AI's open source inference services using Nvidia HGX B300 systems and Spectrum X networking. It aligns with IBM's focus on enterprise grade cloud, AI infrastructure and partnerships with Nvidia, and gives IBM a concrete use case tied to large scale inference workloads on IBM Cloud. What does the US$240 million deal say about IBM's capital and risk profile? The multiyear cluster build comes shortly after IBM's CAD 2.75b in senior unsecured notes issued on 10 August 2026. This underlines that the company is comfortable using debt funding while carrying a high level of debt. For investors, this news connects AI growth ambitions with balance sheet discipline and makes debt management a key factor when weighing the risks around further large infrastructure commitments. What is the key signpost to judge whether this AI cluster is really working for IBM? The clearest checkpoint is Q1 2027, when the Nvidia powered inference cluster is expected to be available on IBM Cloud and serving Together AI's enterprise customers. Evidence that the platform is live at that point, with reference customers using open source model inference at scale, would give a concrete signal on how well this AI partnership is translating into real workloads for IBM. Domain-Specific LLM Platforms MarketDomain-Specific LLM Platforms Market Dublin, Aug. 12, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The "Domain-Specific LLM Platforms Market Size, Share & Trends Analysis Report by Component, Deployment Model, Enterprise Size, Industry Vertical, Region, and Segment Forecasts, 2026-2033" has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering. Global Domain-Specific LLM Platforms Market to Reach USD 15.54 Billion by 2033 The global domain-specific LLM platforms market was valued at USD 1.83 billion in 2025 and is projected to increase from USD 2.44 billion in 2026 to USD 15.54 billion by 2033. The market is expected to register a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 30.3% from 2026 to 2033. North America led the global market in 2025, accounting for more than 35.0% of total revenue. Market growth is being driven by rising enterprise demand for accurate, context-aware artificial intelligence models tailored to specific industries and business functions. Organizations across banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI), healthcare, legal services, manufacturing, retail, telecommunications, government and other sectors are transitioning from general-purpose models to specialized large language model platforms. These solutions support improved decision-making, workflow automation, operational efficiency and industry-relevant outputs while helping organizations reduce inaccurate or unsupported responses. Cloud computing and API-based AI ecosystems are accelerating the deployment of domain-specific LLM platforms. Hyperscalers and enterprise AI providers allow organizations to implement specialized models without making extensive investments in dedicated infrastructure. Lower deployment barriers are supporting adoption among large enterprises and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Demand is also increasing as organizations integrate LLM platforms into customer support, enterprise analytics, knowledge management, document processing and other critical workflows. Story Continues Data security, regulatory compliance and AI governance remain important market growth factors. Businesses operating in highly regulated industries, particularly BFSI and healthcare and life sciences, require controlled, secure and explainable AI systems. Heightened concerns surrounding data privacy, intellectual property protection and regulatory accountability are encouraging investment in enterprise-grade platforms with transparent governance, access controls and compliance capabilities. Here are highlights from Tuesday's Analyst Blog: The Next AI Surge: Top Quantum ETFs to Buy Amid Funding Push As the artificial intelligence (AI) boom strains traditional silicon architectures, quantum computing is evolving from a long-term research project into an operational necessity. Processing complex neural networks, training massive AI models, and safeguarding critical infrastructure require capabilities that far exceed those of classical computing, and quantum computing promises to deliver them. This shift has catalyzed strong upward momentum for quantum stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that hold them in recent times. With the U.S. government now making historic financial commitments to the sector, this might be an opportune time for investors seeking high-growth opportunities to consider these funds as a strategic portfolio addition. However, before we delve deep into the specifics of these funds, it is crucial to examine the forces accelerating quantum demand and evaluate why ETFs offer a prudent way to capture this long-term growth. Driving Forces Behind Quantum Boom The spike in quantum demand is being propelled by a fundamental tech shift paired with massive funding offered by the U.S. government. Scientifically, classical supercomputers are approaching physical wall limits just as AI workloads, materials science, and bio-pharmaceutical research require rapid data processing. Quantum systems, by leveraging qubits in superposition, can theoretically solve specific problems—like factoring encryption or simulating molecules—in minutes that would otherwise take millennia. This is why investments are pouring in for quantum development today. Some recent technological breakthroughs are validating the commercial viability of quantum computing. For instance, in June 2026, Quantinuum published results in Nature on its 98-qubit Helios system operating beyond classical simulation boundaries. In the same month, researchers at Duke Quantum Center and IonQ reported the first fully distributed three-node entangled state of atomic qubits — a breakthrough for quantum networking. Story Continues In April, NVIDIA launched the world's first family of open-source quantum AI models, NVIDIA Ising, designed to help researchers and enterprises build quantum processors capable of running useful applications. Ising models enable researchers to tackle much larger, more complex problems with quantum computers by delivering up to 2.5X faster performance and 3x higher accuracy for the decoding process needed for quantum error correction. Notably, the U.S. administration has been backing this technology with aggressive funding. In November 2025, the U.S. Department of Energy ("DOE") announced $625 million in funding to renew its five National Quantum Information Science ("QIS") Research Centers to advance President Trump's directive of restoring American leadership in quantum science and technology. Recent federal directives — including $2 billion in CHIPS Act incentives for domestic quantum foundries, along with executive orders establishing national quantum computer procurement programs — are also effectively institutionalizing demand in this space. Interestingly, apart from quantum specialists like QNT, mainstream tech giants like International Business Machines are also benefiting from soaring quantum computing demand. The models had been placed in a "sandbox" without internet access but were able to escape in an attempt to cheat on a cybersecurity benchmarking test. Anthropic and Meta (META) later disclosed similar hacking incidents involving their AI models. These science-fiction-like incidents demonstrate the state-of-the-art cyber capabilities of AI systems and show how they could potentially be used by bad actors to cause significant harm. Cybersecurity stocks also got a boost after IBM (IBM) CEO Arvind Krishna told CNBC that cyber threats are currently a top priority for customers. AI Expands the Opportunity Cybersecurity stocks sold off earlier this year along with the broader software sector amid concerns that rapid advances in AI could disrupt traditional security software. However, AI is more likely to expand the long-term cybersecurity opportunity than eliminate it. According to a recent Goldman Sachs research note, cybersecurity has shifted from being viewed as vulnerable to AI disruption to being seen as a clear beneficiary, as increased AI adoption is expected to drive additional security spending. Our world is becoming increasingly digital and interconnected, and this transformation has increased the risk of security breaches and other threats. At the same time, cybercriminals are using AI to launch more sophisticated attacks. As a result, cybersecurity spending is increasingly becoming essential rather than discretionary. The global market for cybersecurity products and services is already worth hundreds of billions of dollars. Gartner expects worldwide information security spending to reach about $244 billion in 2026 and $322 billion by 2029. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 5 Warning Sign with AMZN. Is IBM fairly valued? Test your thesis with our free DCF calculator. The system will be constructed on the latest Blackwell processors, on Nvidia's HGX B300 hardware, and will have Spectrum-X networking. IBM is now in one of the fastest growing segments of the AI market directly. Inference, or the process of running trained models to generate answers and predictions, is becoming a significantly bigger driver of computer demand as firms take AI from testing into everyday use. Together AI is working on open-source models like DeepSeek, MiniMax and Kimi, which are cheaper to run than closed systems from big AI laboratories. For IBM, the transaction provides a method to convert that demand into recurrent cloud infrastructure revenue, rather than just selling software around AI. Nvidia wins here too, because the latest systems are still the core of the cluster. The next question is can transactions like these get big enough to boost IBM's cloud growth in a more meaningful direction. The upgrades are designed to strengthen multi-layer cyber defense for private clouds while improving infrastructure efficiency and simplifying security operations through AI-powered automation. The enhancements arrive as enterprises increasingly deploy AI, Kubernetes and traditional virtualized workloads within a common private-cloud environment. It is also likely to boost VCF's competitive prowess against solutions offered by Nutanix NTNX and International Business Machines IBM. The latest vDefend release strengthens lateral, or east-west, security through a simplified vDefend 1-2-3 deployment framework for Advanced Threat Prevention ("ATP"). The workflow combines ATP with Distributed Firewall ("DFW") capabilities and workload-level visibility to identify security posture, recommend rules and guide deployment. Broadcom said the approach can reduce deployment time from several months to a few weeks. vDefend also adds fully on-premises malware sandboxing and support for air-gapped environments, allowing organizations with stringent data-sovereignty or security requirements to keep sensitive information and threat-analysis processes within their own infrastructure. Broadcom is also strengthening application-layer protection through Avi Load Balancer. The platform now provides native API protection across virtual machines, vSphere Kubernetes Services and AI workloads. The combination of Web Application Firewall functionality with API protection, Avi WAAP is intended to give enterprises greater visibility into application traffic while reducing their dependence on multiple stand-alone security products. Broadcom said a new two-node vDefend Security Services Platform configuration can reduce required physical hardware by as much as 33%. DFW throughput can reach 75 Gbps on servers equipped with 100G NICs and scale to as much as 75 Tbps per VCF instance. Distributed IDPS performance can reach 17 Gbps per server and 17 Tbps per VCF instance, while Avi Load Balancer scale-out throughput has been increased to as much as 12.25 Tbps per controller instance. These figures are based on Broadcom's internal testing. The update should strengthen Broadcom's broader effort to make security an integrated component of the VCF private-cloud platform rather than a collection of separate point products. Broadcom identifies the ability of its software portfolio to manage and secure IT environments as an important business requirement and notes that generative AI has increased both vulnerability discovery and the effectiveness and frequency of cyber threats. The improvements should also make VCF more compelling for AI-intensive private clouds. Story Continues AVGO Faces Tough Competition Broadcom's VCF is facing stiff competition from Nutanix and IBM. Nutanix is directly targeting VMware migrations with a lower-friction alternative to VCF. Nutanix believes it is particularly well positioned for mission-critical VMware workloads because customers can migrate applications without modifying them, with much of the migration process automated. The company is broadening its addressable market beyond traditional hyperconverged infrastructure by supporting external storage, reducing one of the barriers to replacing VMware. IBM is challenging VCF primarily through Red Hat OpenShift, with virtualization becoming an increasingly important component of its hybrid-cloud platform. IBM reported that Red Hat revenue growth accelerated to 11%, while OpenShift ARR reached $2.2 billion in the second quarter of 2026. Red Hat's OpenShift offers customers a Kubernetes-centric platform spanning containers and virtual machines, which is a different approach compared with VCF. The company's rapidly expanding embedded storage business, strength in SSD controllers and increasing contribution from enterprise and automotive storage solutions are driving robust top-line growth. These factors position Silicon Motion well to sustain its growth trajectory through the remainder of 2026. Robust Revenue Growth Bodes Well for SIMO Silicon Motion delivered an impressive second quarter, with revenues surging 127% year over year and 32% sequentially to $451 million. The performance also exceeded the company's earlier guidance of $393-$411 million, highlighting stronger-than-anticipated demand across its portfolio. The momentum was broad-based. SSD controller sales increased 50-55% year over year and 5-10% sequentially. eMMC+UFS controller sales jumped 95-100% from the year-ago quarter and 15-20% sequentially. Sales from Ferri and Boot Drive solutions soared 1,690-1,695% year over year and 110-115% sequentially. The strong performance follows an equally encouraging first quarter, when revenues surged 105% year over year and 23% sequentially to $342.1 million. The sustained acceleration underscores Silicon Motion's success in expanding its addressable market beyond its traditional consumer NAND flash controller business.Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research SIMO's Growth Momentum Set to Continue Management expects the strong top-line trajectory to continue in the third quarter of 2026. Silicon Motion projects revenues between $519 million and $541 million, indicating sequential growth of 15-20% and year-over-year growth of 114-124%. At the midpoint of $530 million, the guidance represents another significant step up from second-quarter revenues of $451 million and first-quarter revenues of $342.1 million. The trend suggests that Silicon Motion is not merely benefiting from a favorable comparison with the prior year but is generating substantial sequential expansion as new products and customer programs ramp. Growth is being supported by several catalysts. The company is expanding its presence in embedded eMMC and UFS controllers, while its 6nm PCIe Gen 5 SSD controller portfolio strengthens its position in higher-performance storage applications. Silicon Motion is also targeting enterprise and AI infrastructure opportunities through its MonTitan enterprise SSD controllers and Enterprise Boot Drive solutions. The MonTitan platform, in particular, expands Silicon Motion's addressable market beyond its historically consumer-focused business. Earlier this year, management observed that two customers were already in production and five additional major cloud-service-provider customers were expected to ramp in the latter half. Story Continues Price Performance Silicon Motion has gained a stellar 241.3% over the past year compared with the industry's growth of 190.5%. It has also outperformed peers like Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. AMD and International Business Machines Corporation IBM. Advanced Micro has gained 180.6% and IBM is up 0.4% over this period. Judges represent leading organisations including Citi, The Coca-Cola Company, Henkel, HSBC, IBM, Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, Lenovo, Mars, Mondelez International, Nestlé, Pernod Ricard, Reckitt, Samsung, SAP, Starbucks, Unilever, Visa, and Volvo Cars, among others. Ahead of the Campaign Agency of the Year Awards 2026, members of this year's judging panel shared what they look for in standout entries and the qualities that distinguish the region's best agencies. Rvisra Chirathivat, Chief Marketing Officer, Central and Robinson Department Store said: Story Continues "The marketing and communications landscape across Asia is evolving faster than ever, driven by AI, data, and changing consumer expectations. The agencies that will succeed in this complex environment are those that combine strategic thinking, data, and creativity to help clients solve real business challenges while keeping the human connection at the centre of everything they do. I'm interested in understanding how an agency solves a genuine commercial challenge, influences customer behaviour, and contributes to long-term brand and business growth. The entrants that stand out will be those creating lasting value for both customers and the business - agencies that become genuine business partners. I believe genuine business excellence is reflected in the positive and sustainable impact an agency creates for the brands they serve." Meanwhile, Josette Addinall, Vice President Marketing, Pacific, Schneider Electric, shares her perspective: "I see the landscape being shaped by three defining forces: AI, shifting customer expectations, and rising expectations around measurable business outcomes. In my opinion, the best agencies position themselves as growth partners rather than suppliers. Accenture is a global consulting, technology, managed services, outsourcing, cloud, cybersecurity, data, and AI implementation company. The investment case is interesting because the business remains profitable, cash-generative, and strategically relevant, while the stock has been heavily punished over fears that AI will disrupt the traditional consulting and IT services model. A similar effort is underway in the Senate to fund the nascent technology, which researchers believe could provide a range of new capabilities in everything from drug discovery to computing encryption standards. The congressional moves buttress work within the Trump administration, which in May announced plans to pour more than $2 billion into the industry through direct federal investments. In June, President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at advancing quantum research and development and another mandating federal agencies take steps to insulate their IT systems against quantum computer-based cyberattacks. Despite a slate of recent technological breakthroughs, investors remain skeptical of the industry's near-term commercial success, according to Philip Singerman, senior adviser at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Shares of leading pure-play quantum companies including D-Wave Quantum Inc., Infleqtion Inc. and Rigetti Computing Inc. have fallen sharply since the start of the year as investor enthusiasm for the technology, which had been hailed by analysts as the next market-defining computing revolution after artificial intelligence, has cooled. Global X's AI and Technology ETF, which holds a basket of top AI and semiconductor stocks, has risen 20% over the same period. Another quantum company, College Park, Maryland-based IonQ Inc., last week closed its $1.8 billion acquisition of semiconductor foundry SkyWater Technology Inc. after federal regulators ended their review of the deal without taking any action to stop it. IonQ on Wednesday raised its full-year revenue forecast, and its shares have recouped most of their losses for the year. Nonetheless, funding quantum has quickly become a political priority as governments line up financing in the race for superiority on a technology that ultimately could pose security threats, breaking the systems that protect banks and government data. Story Continues A mix of startups and large firms, including Microsoft Corp. and Alphabet Inc.'s Google, are trying to apply quantum physics to make computers exponentially more powerful than today's machines. These companies are betting that the nascent field, which uses the rules of subatomic particles to manipulate and transmit information, is getting closer to delivering real-world progress in fields like drug discovery and finance. There's also the race against China, which has established a $10 billion National Laboratory for Quantum Information Sciences, while Europe and the UK combined have committed nearly three times as much public money as the US to develop the technology, according to estimates compiled by industry consultancy QBN. "In China, you see a massive push toward quantum leadership," said Darío Gil, under secretary for science at the Department of Energy. "That's the one that I'm most focused on." White House Summit One sign of quantum's growing political salience in Washington is an uptick in interactions between policymakers and industry insiders, according to Infleqtion Inc.
