The arrangements provide long-term certainty for Tomago Aluminium, its workforce, its customers and the Hunter region, delivering reliable, internationally competitive power to the smelter until 2038. Under the agreement, Tomago Aluminium will enter into a 10-year power purchase agreement (PPA) for electricity supply to the smelter through to 2038, with the power to be supplied by 100 per cent renewable sources from 2033. The PPA will begin following the 31 December 2028 expiry of the current electricity contract. Tomago Aluminium will support the new agreement with A$1.1 billion (in real terms) of investment in the smelter between now and 2038, including A$100 million for decarbonisation initiatives. The smelter will continue to provide important demand response services to the New South Wales electricity system. Rio Tinto Aluminium & Lithium Chief Executive Jérôme Pécresse said: "This agreement secures Tomago Aluminium's long-term future, supporting Australian manufacturing, skilled jobs and the Hunter community, as well as providing security of supply to the smelter's global customers. "It demonstrates what can be achieved when industry, governments and workers come together to strengthen Australia's manufacturing sector. "I want to recognise the significant work of the Commonwealth and New South Wales Governments, unions and the Tomago workforce, as well as the many people across Tomago Aluminium, Rio Tinto and our joint venture partners who helped reach this outcome. "It means Australia keeps a critical piece of sovereign manufacturing capability, while helping Tomago Aluminium continue competitively producing the aluminium needed for the global energy transition." This Tomago agreement comes after a March 2026 agreement between Rio Tinto, the Commonwealth Government and the Queensland Government to secure a long-term future for the Boyne aluminium smelter at Gladstone and ensure it also remains internationally cost-competitive beyond its current power contract. This means Australia's two largest aluminium smelters now have a secured pathway to long-term, cost-competitive, low-carbon power beyond the expiry of their current electricity contracts. It also strengthens one of the world's largest integrated aluminium supply chains, spanning Rio Tinto's bauxite mines, alumina refineries and aluminium smelters in eastern Australia. Story Continues Once Tomago Aluminium's electricity is supplied by 100% renewable sources, from 2033 under the PPA, it will reduce the smelter's Scope 1 and 2 operating carbon emissions by 7.1 million tonnes per year. Tomago Aluminium, New South Wales' biggest electricity user, will also continue to provide large-scale demand response capability under the arrangements, helping reduce electricity use during periods of system stress, improving system reliability and supporting the integration of more renewable energy. Tomago Aluminium is an independently managed joint venture owned by Rio Tinto (51.55 per cent), Gove Aluminium Finance Ltd (36.05 per cent) and Norsk Hydro (12.4 per cent). Rio Tinto continues to work towards halving its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 from a 2018 baseline. Our ability to meet our 2030 target will remain dependent on the timely delivery of renewable projects and the outcomes of other commercial discussions. Additional information Founded in 1983, Tomago Aluminium Company is Australia's largest aluminium smelter, producing up to 590,000 tonnes of aluminium a year – almost 40 per cent of Australia's annual aluminium production. The smelter directly employs around 1,000 people, alongside 200 full-time equivalent contractors, and supports an estimated 5,000 indirect jobs. Private cellular networks remained a specialist segment during the 2G and 3G eras, with deployments such as GSM-R supporting railway communications. The arrival of private LTE in the early 2010s marked a turning point, led by projects including Rio Tinto's mining network in Western Australia, Tampnet's offshore infrastructure and iNET's 700 MHz network in the Permian Basin. Today, private 5G networks are increasingly replacing LTE across industrial and enterprise environments, creating a market opportunity that significantly exceeds that of previous wireless technology generations. Production-grade private 5G deployments continue to expand among leading manufacturers, mining companies, energy providers, transportation operators and technology businesses. Organizations investing in private wireless infrastructure include Airbus, BASF, Bayer, BMW, BP, Chevron, Ford, Foxconn, Google, Hyundai, Intel, Jaguar Land Rover, John Deere, LG Electronics, Lufthansa, Nestle, PETRONAS, POSCO, Tesla, Toyota, Volkswagen, Walmart, Whirlpool and Xerox. Private 5G networks deliver the throughput, latency, reliability, availability and device density required by advanced industrial applications. Capabilities such as URLLC and mMTC support communications between machines, robots, sensors and control systems, while providing a long-term migration path toward future 6G networks. Wider coverage, scalability, deterministic performance, security and mobility support are also strengthening the case for replacing wired connections and interference-prone unlicensed wireless technologies across industrial IoT environments. Adoption is accelerating as organizations across the United States, Canada, Europe, China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand and Brazil increase investment in industrial automation, physical AI and mission-critical communications. Private 5G deployments are now generating measurable improvements in operational efficiency, safety, productivity and cost control. Tesla, Ford, Hyundai, Toyota, LG Electronics, Foxconn, Whirlpool, Salzgitter, BASF, Midea, Gree and JD Logistics are among the organizations that have eliminated connectivity-related stoppages after migrating automated guided vehicle and autonomous mobile robot communications from Wi-Fi to private 5G. Jaguar Land Rover, BD SENSORS and other industrial users have also extended reliable connectivity into plant areas where wired Ethernet was previously too costly or complex to install. Story Continues Additional deployments demonstrate the growing business impact of private 5G infrastructure. Fulin Precision has deployed 100 semi-humanoid robots coordinated through a private 5G-Advanced network. Newmont has extended teleremote and autonomous machine operations from 100 meters to 2.5 kilometers at Australian gold mines. CIMPOR has reported annual savings exceeding $1 million per plant through private 5G-enabled predictive maintenance, while Pegatron has reduced factory reconfiguration costs by as much as 50% through a multinational deployment. Public-sector use cases are delivering comparable benefits. Las Vegas has associated its municipal private 5G network with a 90% reduction in wrong-way driving incidents. Mexico City Police has used standalone private 5G to extend immersive virtual reality training sessions from 25 minutes to 1.5 hours while removing the need for officers to carry bulky equipment. Annual investment in private 5G networks for vertical industries is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of approximately 34% between 2026 and 2029, surpassing $6.6 billion by the end of 2029. Much of this expansion will come from localized private 5G networks supporting workforce connectivity, automation and AI applications across enterprise campuses and industrial facilities. Release Date: August 07, 2026 For the complete transcript of the earnings call, please refer to the full earnings call transcript. Positive Points Consolidated revenues increased 14% year-over-year to $144 million, driven by higher product prices and volumes in Brazil. Adjusted EBITDA of nearly $18 million was generated, with a resilient 12.4% margin despite rising raw material costs. Conda's annual turnaround was completed on time and on budget, maintaining peak utilization and comparable fertilizer volumes. Arias increased fertilizer production by 62% year-over-year and exceeded internal expectations. A mutually beneficial amendment to the long-term sulfuric acid contract with Rio Tinto was reached, shifting pricing to the Tampa Index and providing more certainty, which had an immediate positive impact on results. Negative Points Adjusted EBITDA margin decreased by about 50 basis points sequentially due to continuing increases in raw material costs, particularly sulfur. Sulfuric acid sales at Arias were limited by the availability of sulfur purchases due to ongoing market dislocations. Global supply chain disruptions from the conflict in Iran are expected to negatively affect operating margins through the end of the year. Sulfur prices remain at record levels, with spot prices above $1,000 per ton in key regions, and no significant relief is expected until the Strait of Hormuz can be regularly transited. High fertilizer prices are causing demand destruction as farmers delay applications, and raw material costs are forecast to stay elevated, limiting margin recovery. Q & A Highlights Warning! Q: Can you provide details on the amendment to the long-term sulfuric acid contract with Rio Tinto and its impact on recent results and future expectations?A: David Delaney, CEO, explained that the amendment, effective in May, changed the pricing basis for Conda's sulfuric acid purchases from the Vancouver Sulfur Index to the Tampa Index, and includes provisions to shield both parties from extreme commodity price fluctuations. This change had an immediate positive impact on financial results as the Tampa Index was below the Vancouver Index throughout the second quarter. The new terms provide more price certainty, enabling both companies to run operations at maximum rates, optimize fixed cost absorption, and ultimately improve operating margins. This agreement underscores the long-standing partnership between Itafos and Rio Tinto, ensuring a stable domestic supply of a critical raw material for U.S. farmers. Story Continues Q: What is the outlook for sulfur prices, and can we expect any relief soon?A: David Delaney, CEO, stated that sulfur prices remain at record levels due to global supply disruptions, primarily from the conflict in Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which previously handled about 45% of global sulfur trade. While spot prices appear to have plateaued, they remain elevated, with Vancouver spot prices at $1,100 per ton and prices in the Middle East, China, and Brazil all above $1,000 per ton. Additional supply constraints include China's elimination of sulfuric acid exports and Russia's extended suspension of sulfur exports. Itafos expects to continue operating at full levels due to its supply contracts and location, but a meaningful price decline is unlikely until vessels can regularly transit the Strait of Hormuz. Q: What are your expectations for phosphate fertilizer prices over the next few months?A: David Delaney, CEO, indicated that phosphate fertilizer prices are expected to remain high due to ongoing supply availability issues. Global export supply has fallen, with China's P205 export restrictions and production shut-ins from major producers like OCP and Mosaic removing significant volumes from the market. Neal outlined the data assembled since acquiring the project. Rio Tinto's best historic hole at Hole 22 returned 109 metres grading 0.75% copper, but Neal says that intercept was distal to the main porphyry centre. Surface sampling has returned 100 grams per tonne gold alongside 3,800 grams per tonne silver and 23% copper. Geophysics has identified five target areas, all pointing west toward the interpreted porphyry centre. The company is planning a 9,000-metre drill program. The first three holes will re-drill Hole 22 on an angle rather than vertically, because the team believes mineralisation is dipping to the west and a vertical hole understates true mineralised width. The program will then move to the Sunrise area to the west, where geologists Dan McNeill and Alan Wainwright found a four-gram-per-tonne gold porphyry dike at surface that Rio Tinto has acknowledged it missed. Drilling is scheduled to begin at the end of August, with laboratory turnaround times quoted at three to four weeks, putting initial results in the late-September to mid-October window. Neal said finding a drill rig was the main logistical challenge, describing drill availability as tight across the junior sector. About GMG GMG is an Australian based clean-technology company which develops, makes and sells energy saving and energy storage solutions, enabled by graphene manufactured via in house production process. GMG uses its own proprietary production process to decompose natural gas (i.e. methane) into its natural elements, carbon (as graphene), hydrogen and some residual hydrocarbon gases. This process produces high quality, low cost, scalable, 'tuneable' and low/no contaminant graphene suitable for use in clean-technology and other applications. Story Continues The Company's present focus is to de-risk and develop commercial scale-up capabilities, and secure market applications. In the energy savings segment, GMG has initially focused on graphene enhanced heating, ventilation and air conditioning ("HVAC-R") coating (or energy-saving coating) which is now being marketed into other applications including electronic heat sinks, industrial process plants and data centres. Another product GMG has developed is the graphene lubricant additive focused on saving liquid fuels initially for diesel engines. In the energy storage segment, GMG and the University of Queensland are working collaboratively with financial support from the Australian Government to progress R&D and commercialization of GMG Graphene Batteries. GMG has also developed a graphene additive slurry that is aimed to improve the performance of lithium-ion batteries. The Consortium calls on the Board to engage without further delay. TORONTO, Aug. 10, 2026 /CNW/ -- The United States Consortium (the "Consortium") — now comprising a prominent United States anchor investor ("US anchor"), Kyma Capital Limited ("Kyma Capital"), veteran global financial markets investor Trifon Natsis, and Glencore Ltd. ("Glencore") (LON: GLEN) today confirms that it formally submitted a comprehensive, non-binding recapitalization proposal (the "Proposal") to the Board of Directors of Sherritt International Corporation (TSX: S) ("Sherritt" or the "Company") on June 26, 2026. The Proposal has been before the Board since that date. The Consortium is making this announcement so that Sherritt's shareholders, noteholders, employees and other stakeholders can assess the Company's alternatives for themselves. On August 7, an Ad Hoc Group representing a majority of the outstanding principal amount of Sherritt's 9.25% 2031 Notes publicly disclosed the key terms of a recapitalization proposal submitted to the Company by a consortium of strategic and financial investors and called on the Board to engage immediately with all credible alternatives. The Consortium confirms that the proposal disclosed by the Ad Hoc Group is the Proposal described in this announcement. The Proposal provides: New equity at C$0.12 per share — a market-reflective price with no discount to Sherritt's unaffected share price as of May 19, 2026, in contrast to the discounted structure publicly disclosed as the basis of the Gillon Capital proposal; Partial participation rights for eligible existing shareholders — eligible shareholders will have the opportunity to participate pro rata in a portion of the new equity issuance at the same C$0.12 per share price as the Consortium, reducing the dilution that would otherwise result from a closed control placement; A fully-funded transaction with no third-party debt financing condition — equity commitments from Consortium members, supported by equity commitment letters or equivalent instruments delivered at signing of definitive documentation, and a structure designed to provide a credible path to the noteholder support required for implementation; While not conditional, the Proposal provides the ability to unlock additional financing from the existing noteholders, contemplated in combination with equity commitments from the Consortium; Clear control and ownership structure through a U.S.-domiciled acquisition vehicle which, in the aggregate, will hold at least 55% of the Company on a fully diluted basis at completion; and U.S. regulatory engagement already underway — the Consortium has received written confirmation from the U.S. Department of State, addressed to the Consortium and the Company, that the U.S. Department of State and Department of the Treasury do not object to the Consortium engaging in negotiations with Sherritt. U.S. data-center power demand is forecast to increase from 31 GW in 2025 to 66 GW by 2027, and data center electricity consumption is expected to increase four times from today's level by 2035. Goldman Sachs projects hyperscaler spending on AI infrastructure to reach $765 billion in 2026 and soar past $1 trillion in 2027. The AI infrastructure buildout is fueling additional demand for industrial metals, such as copper, aluminum, steel, and lithium. Longer term, supply constraints could become increasingly important, with the IEA expecting copper and lithium supply deficits to persist through 2035. Rio Tinto plc (NYSE:RIO) is benefiting from the strong prices and surging demand for these metals. This has helped drive a sharp improvement in the company's earnings and cash flow, along with shareholder returns.Rio Tinto (RIO)’s 43% Earnings Surge: Sustainable Growth or Commodity Mirage? Rio Tinto Delivers Stronger Earnings as Productivity Gains Take Hold Rio Tinto plc (NYSE:RIO) released its 2026 half-year results on July 29. Its underlying earnings rose 43% to $6.9 billion, supported by strong metal prices. Copper, aluminum, and lithium businesses contributed 57% of the company's EBITDA. In addition to the favorable commodity market conditions, Rio Tinto also reaped benefits from its operational efficiency program built around cost-cutting and divestments. This program launched last year and delivered $870 million in savings during the first half. That, combined with the $3.6 billion benefit from stronger commodity prices, helped push Rio Tinto's free cash flow through the roof. The miner's free cash flow increased 75% to $3.8 billion. This led the company to increase its interim dividend 43% to $3.4 billion. For Rio Tinto, the AI infrastructure buildout could offer an additional source of demand for its products beyond the traditional construction markets. A lot of copper is being used to expand power grids, and aluminum is seeing more use in power infrastructure and data center components such as server racks. More steel is going into data center buildings and transmission towers, while lithium is used in battery energy storage systems. How Rio Tinto Compares With BHP Both Rio Tinto plc (NYSE:RIO) and BHP Group Ltd (NYSE:BHP) are well positioned to benefit from AI-fueled demand for copper and other metals. But Rio Tinto compares favorably with rival BHP Group on several metrics. Rio Tinto stock currently offers a discounted valuation at a forward PE ratio of 11.57x, compared to BHP's 16.56x. Rio also offers a higher dividend yield of 4.85% against BHP's 3.04%. Story Continues However, both companies generate strong cash flow. Rio's latest results showed strong momentum in free cash flow during the first half of 2026. Hedge Funds Continue Adding Exposure to Rio Tinto Hedge fund investors are showing confidence in Rio Tinto's stock. Hedge fund holders in the stock increased to 40 in Q1 from 38 the prior quarter. BHP Group Ltd (NYSE:BHP)'s hedge ownership also modestly increased in the same period but remained lower at 31 from 29. Several hedge funds increased their stakes in Rio Tinto. Renaissance Technologies increased its position by 418%, Quantinno Capital raised it by 33%, and Bridgewater Associates boosted it by 1,108%. Bearish sentiment is limited across Rio Tinto and BHP Group. Rio's short interest ratio stood at 0.74% as of July 15, down from 0.82 at the end of June. When a default monopoly erodes via regulatory inertia and score shopping, quarterly upside is just window dressing. At 19–23x CY27 EPS versus peers at 11x, FICO trades on borrowed time. Best Buy What's the full story? Jefferies downgrades Best Buy Co Inc (NYSE:BBY) to Hold because the market already prices in a pristine second quarter while ignoring the structural icebergs ahead. Consumer purchase intent tumbled over 3% in July, setting up a brutal collision with a tough third-quarter comparison. Meanwhile, recent C-suite departures mean the new leadership team will almost certainly issue an underwhelming, defensive forecast. The macro headwinds are compounding fast. Memory chip shortages threaten to drive laptop prices up by as much as 14%, cratering PC demand just as Windows 10 upgrade tailwinds expire. Temporary catalysts like tax refunds and exclusive TV distribution deals are fading, while surging ad spending signals that top-line momentum requires increasingly expensive life support. Even video game tailwinds cannot offset a structurally weakening core business. At a compressed discount relative to the S&P 500, Best Buy trades at stretched multiples that demand over 8% earnings growth. The firm models closer to 5%. The upside optionality is gone. Vale What's the full story? BofA downgrades Vale SA ADR (NYSE:VALE) from Buy to Neutral as the top-down iron ore story unravels. Global iron ore prices are collapsing even as shipping freight costs remain painfully elevated, squeezing margins from both ends. Meanwhile, Vale's once-appealing free cash flow yield premium over global mining peers has virtually evaporated, removing the primary margin of safety for equity holders. Story Continues The analyst models 2027 production costs significantly above Wall Street consensus, clearing the runway for a wave of sell-side earnings downgrades. To reflect this harsher operational reality, BofA slashes its price objective by 11% to $16 per share. Long-term value still exists in Vale's operational flexibility, copper expansion, and balance-sheet de-risking. However, macro headwinds and sticky inflation mean near-term quarterly numbers are bound to disappoint. At current valuation levels, the risk-reward profile is balanced, and the easy money has already been made. Select Water Solutions Inc. What's the full story? Select Energy Services Inc (NYSE:WTTR) delivers another blowout quarter, crushing third-quarter consolidated EBITDA estimates by mid-teens percentages on record Chemical Technologies revenue. Management's forward guidance similarly blows past consensus. While seasonal winter slowdowns will temporarily cool the fourth-quarter run-rate, the broader fundamental trajectory heading into 2027 remains undeniably strong. The team has long maintained a bullish stance on the equity, but a massive rally in the share price has largely closed the valuation gap. Select now trades near fair value, meaning further multiple expansion depends on a multi-year sequence of contract wins and seamless operational execution rather than simple deep-value reprici
["Market update", "VALEN
source:a222353b445eff7726ad27a808d2c7384a438cf160ecee834e6cc07779b94ccd
https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/article/2-key-checks-on-ai-infrastructure-and-inflation-what-to-watch-this-week-100000678.html
https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/article/2-key-checks-on-ai-infrastructure-and-inflation-what-to-watch-this-week-100000678.html
2 key checks on AI infrastructure and inflation: What to watch this week
The stock market's first week after the Big Tech earnings extravaganza went about as well as any investor could have hoped. Trump said the investments included a $1.4 billion loan agreement with Sila Nanotechnologies Inc. from the Defense Department's Office of Strategic Capital. Other investments include $400 million by the Pentagon to expand production in Australia of scandium, which is critical to aerospace and defense industries, and $150 million with Niron Magnetics Inc., a Minnesota rare-earths firm. The Export-Import Bank is also working to provide more than $1 billion in financing for Ivanhoe Electric Inc.'s Santa Cruz copper project in Arizona, along with a $25 million investment to launch a graphite mine project in Alabama. The president also hailed plans to spend over $180 million to bolster educational programs for the mining industry, saying it would "train the next generation of American miners." Trump said his efforts would ensure the US "is never again reliant on hostile foreign nations for the resources our country needs to dominate in the future." The president was expected to be joined by executives from prominent companies, including Rio Tinto Group, BHP Group and Freeport-McMoRan Inc., MP Materials Corp., USA Rare Earth Inc., Energy Fuels Inc., US Antimony Corp., Sunrise Energy Metals Ltd., and The Metals Company. The event showcases administration efforts to spur US critical minerals development and processing ahead of a planned visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to Washington in September. Trump said that under his administration domestic mines were reopening at a fast pace, including what he said was the first American rare-earth mine in more than 70 years and the construction of the first new aluminum smelter since 1980. Despite a trade truce that eased export controls over critical minerals and magnets essential to a host of cutting edge industries, rare earths remain a source of tension between the world's two largest economies. The US has sought to partner with domestic companies to build out a mine-to-magnet supply chain independent of China. Story Continues The federal government has already pledged more than $10 billion of investments in a bid to jump-start nascent US markets for rare earths and permanent magnets. The Pentagon kicked off the spending spree more than a year ago, announcing it would take a $400 million preferred equity stake in MP Materials — the sole domestic rare earths producer — and the US has since announced other projects the government is championing. While the scale of the US critical minerals build-out is enormous, there have been serious challenges and slow progress in developing the domestic industry. --With assistance from Jacob Lorinc.
