TELUS (TSX:T) has committed $2 million to support emergency wildfire relief efforts across British Columbia. Funds are aimed at backing affected communities, reinforcing network infrastructure resilience, and assisting first responders and vulnerable groups. The commitment comes as wildfires continue to disrupt daily life and critical communications services in parts of the province. Consider widening your watchlist to include other dividend-focused telecom and utility stocks through 4 dividend fortresses.TSX:T Earnings & Revenue Growth as at Aug 2026 TELUS operates as a major telecommunications company in Canada and internationally, and its networks often provide critical connectivity for communities affected by natural disasters. With a market cap of about CA$21.2b, its response to crises can influence how essential services function during emergencies. We've flagged 2 risks for TELUS. See which could impact your investment. How TELUS's wildfire relief move connects to its cash flow and network narrative The TELUS Narrative assumes that heavy investment in broadband, 5G and digital services pays off through resilient cash flow and a stronger role as critical infrastructure, especially during crises like these wildfires. "Sustained investment in network modernization, with a $2B commitment to expand broadband in key markets and asset monetization through the Terrion tower partnership, should drive high incremental returns, operational efficiencies, and deleveraging..." Read the full TELUS narrative to see the case behind these numbers This wildfire relief commitment backs the part of the TELUS story that leans on network modernization and essential service status. Keeping evacuees and first responders connected under pressure is a real-world test of those fibre and 5G investments. It can also support the brand and customer stickiness versus peers like Rogers and BCE when service reliability really matters. At the same time, the move sits against a backdrop of a Q2 2026 loss of CA$1.84b, large impairments and a 55% dividend reset that all tie to a deleveraging focus. Analysts have already flagged questions about dividend sustainability and interest coverage, so any incremental community support spending will be judged against that tighter cash discipline. For TELUS, actions like this only really matter for investors once they are weighed against the broader Narrative that links network quality, balance sheet repair and newer businesses into a single decision filter for the stock. TDS have declined 20.2% over the past three months, reflecting investor concerns around legacy-service declines, rising fiber investment and execution risks. The stock's weakness comes even as TDS Telecom accelerates its fiber deployment and management raises its 2026 fiber service address target. The second-quarter results show a business in transition, with improving fiber metrics competing with pressure on legacy operations and higher capital requirements.Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research TDS Telecom Faces Legacy Revenue Pressure TDS Telecom's service revenues declined 6% year over year in the second quarter. The decline reflected divestitures and continued weakness in legacy services, which more than offset gains from the fiber business. Residential fiber revenue increased 13%, underscoring the uneven pace of TDS Telecom's shift toward higher-value broadband services. TDS Telecom had about 1.17 million marketable fiber service addresses at the end of the second quarter, representing 60% of its total service addresses served by fiber. Management continues to target 2.1 million marketable fiber service addresses over the long term. TDS Fiber Growth Accelerates TDS Telecom delivered approximately 66,000 new marketable fiber service addresses in the second quarter, up about 150% from the year-ago period. Residential fiber net additions totaled 15,100, a 47% increase year over year. The company also reported record construction crew counts to support its network expansion. The stronger deployment pace prompted management to raise its 2026 target for marketable fiber service addresses delivered to 250,000-300,000 from the previous outlook. The long-term target remains 2.1 million addresses. The higher deployment pace makes fiber a larger driver of TDS Telecom's operating footprint even as legacy services continue to decline. TDS Investment Raises Execution Stakes Fiber expansion is also increasing the company's near-term capital requirements. TDS Telecom's second-quarter capital expenditures nearly doubled to $179 million, while full-year capital expenditure guidance increased to $625-$675 million from $550-$600 million previously. The higher spending can support faster fiber deployment and the company's long-term broadband transition. It also raises the amount of capital that must be committed before the benefits of a larger fiber footprint are fully reflected in operating results and cash generation. Management lowered its 2026 TDS Telecom revenue guidance to $1.00-$1.025 billion from $1.015-$1.055 billion previously while raising capital expenditure guidance, highlighting the trade-off between network investment and near-term financial performance. Story Continues TDS Array Gains Add Capital Flexibility Array completed a $1 billion spectrum transaction with Verizon Communications Inc. VZ in June and about $168 million of spectrum transactions with T-Mobile US, Inc. TMUS in May. TDS said Array also delivered sequential tower tenancy growth, while site rental revenues increased 95% year over year in the second quarter. The spectrum transactions provide cash proceeds that can support capital allocation and financial flexibility. They should not, however, be viewed as recurring operating earnings. TDS' 2026 guidance reconciliation deducts a $585 million gain on license sales and exchanges and $65 million of short-term imputed spectrum lease income from Array's EBITDA to arrive at Adjusted EBITDA. The distinction matters because spectrum monetization can improve liquidity without creating a recurring revenue stream comparable with tower leasing or broadband operations. Array's tower business also remains exposed to tenant trends. The company has been transitioning toward a tower-focused model following the divestiture of its wireless operations, while the loss of DISH revenues remains an offset to improving tenancy activity. TDS reported a sharp improvement in second-quarter 2026 earnings, but the headline gain was driven partly by spectrum monetization at Array Digital Infrastructure. Earnings reached $2.24 per share compared with a loss of 5 cents a year earlier, while operating revenues rose 3.6% to $309.3 million. The quarter also showed faster fiber deployment at TDS Telecom, making the sustainability of the earnings improvement an important consideration for investors. Telephone and Data Systems, Inc. Price, Consensus and EPS Surprise Telephone and Data Systems, Inc. price-consensus-eps-surprise-chart | Telephone and Data Systems, Inc. Quote TDS Earnings Benefit From Spectrum Sales TDS reported $2.24 per share in second-quarter earnings, up from a loss of 5 cents in the year-ago quarter. Earnings topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate, producing a 100% surprise, while revenues missed the $315 million consensus estimate by 1.83%. Array's spectrum monetization was a major contributor to the earnings improvement. Array completed a $1 billion spectrum transaction with Verizon Communications Inc. VZ in June and about $168 million of additional spectrum sales to T-Mobile US, Inc. TMUS in May. The transactions helped lift net income attributable to TDS common shareholders to $260.6 million from a $6 million loss a year earlier. The distinction between transaction-related gains and recurring operations is important. Array's license sales boosted reported results, but TDS excludes the gain on license sales and exchanges when calculating Adjusted EBITDA. That measure provides a clearer view of underlying operating performance. TDS Fiber Growth Broadens the Revenue Base TDS Telecom continued to expand its fiber footprint during the quarter. The business delivered approximately 66,000 new marketable fiber service addresses, bringing the first-half total to about 106,000. Residential fiber net additions reached 15,100, up 47% year over year. Marketable fiber service addresses totaled approximately 1.17 million, with 60% of service addresses served by fiber. Fiber growth is beginning to offset pressure from legacy operations, but it has not yet reversed the broader revenue decline. TDS Telecom generated $248 million of operating revenues, down 6% year over year, as copper and cable declines and divestitures outweighed a 13% increase in fiber revenue. Adjusted EBITDA declined 21% to $70 million, while capital expenditures nearly doubled to $179 million as construction activity accelerated. Management raised its 2026 fiber service address delivery target to 250,000-300,000 from 200,000-250,000 previously. The company continues to target 2.1 million marketable fiber service addresses over the long term. Story Continues TDS Guidance Shows a Costly Transition The updated outlook captures the trade-off between faster fiber deployment and weaker near-term financial performance. TDS Telecom's 2026 revenue guidance was reduced to $1-$1.025 billion from $1.015-$1.055 billion, while Adjusted EBITDA guidance was narrowed to $310-$330 million from $310-$350 million. At the same time, fiber service address guidance increased and capital expenditure guidance rose to $625-$675 million from $550-$600 million. The higher spending reflects the construction required to expand the fiber footprint. TDS Telecom's second-quarter capital expenditures nearly doubled to $179 million, making cash generation an important measure of whether the additional fiber investment will translate into sustainable operating gains. The earnings picture therefore remains mixed. Fiber deployment and customer additions are accelerating, but legacy revenue declines and higher investment are keeping pressure on the telecom segment's near-term profitability. TDS presents a trade-off between accelerating fiber deployment and the financial demands of transforming its legacy telecom business. The shares trade below the Zacks industry average on an EV/EBITDA basis, while fiber metrics are improving. At the same time, free cash flow remains under pressure as capital spending rises. TDS currently carries a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) and an Outperform recommendation, but its mixed Style Scores point to risks that investors should consider before adding to the position. TDS Valuation Offers a Potential Cushion TDS trades at 6.81X trailing 12-month EV/EBITDA, below 7.87X for its Zacks industry. The stock's price-to-book ratio is 0.91. The EV/EBITDA multiple is also below its five-year median of 7.68X, although the company has historically traded across a wide range. The relatively modest valuation can provide some support if fiber execution improves operating performance. However, a lower multiple alone does not remove the uncertainty surrounding the transition. TDS Telecom's revenue declined 6% year over year in the second quarter, while Adjusted EBITDA fell 21% to $70 million. Capital expenditures nearly doubled to $179 million, showing the level of investment required to expand the fiber footprint.Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research TDS Fiber Metrics Strengthen the Growth Case TDS Telecom's fiber expansion is the clearest positive for the investment thesis. Marketable fiber service addresses reached approximately 1.17 million in the second quarter, with 60% of service addresses served by fiber. The company delivered approximately 66,000 new marketable fiber service addresses during the quarter, up about 150% year over year, while residential fiber net additions rose 47% to 15,100. Management raised its 2026 fiber service address delivery target to 250,000-300,000 from 200,000-250,000 previously. The long-term target remains 2.1 million marketable fiber service addresses. The higher target supports the view that fiber can become a larger driver of TDS Telecom's business as legacy copper and cable operations decline. The challenge is converting that footprint expansion into recurring financial growth. Residential fiber revenue increased 13% in the second quarter, but divestitures and legacy declines more than offset the gain, leaving TDS Telecom's service revenue down 6%. TDS Cash Flow Tests the Investment Thesis Cash generation is a key consideration for investors deciding whether the current valuation is enough to justify buying the stock. TDS generated $151.07 million of cash from operating activities from continuing operations in the first half of 2026, up from $125.96 million a year earlier. Yet free cash flow from continuing operations was negative $168.03 million, compared with negative $25.36 million in the prior-year period. The gap reflects sharply higher investment. Cash paid for additions to property, plant and equipment rose to $317.92 million from $150.48 million a year earlier. TDS Telecom's full-year capital expenditure guidance also increased to $625-$675 million from $550-$600 million previously. Story Continues Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research This creates an important test for the fiber strategy. Faster deployment can expand the addressable customer base, but the company must eventually generate enough incremental cash flow from those investments to offset the heavier capital burden. TDS Array Supports Financial Flexibility TDS also entered the second half with a stronger liquidity position, helped by spectrum monetization at Array Digital Infrastructure. Cash and cash equivalents totaled $2.19 billion as of June 30, 2026, compared with $765.95 million at the end of 2025, while long-term debt, net, declined to $670.65 million from $823.36 million. The positive estimate revision depicts bullish sentiments about the stock's growth potential.Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Verizon's Wireless and Broadband Growth Gains Momentum Verizon's wireless business is showing solid subscriber momentum. During the second quarter, the company posted 184,000 postpaid phone net additions during the quarter, marking its strongest consumer second-quarter performance in five years. Core prepaid net additions totaled 73,000, extending the company's streak of positive prepaid subscriber growth to eight consecutive quarters. Consumer postpaid phone churn declined to 84 basis points from 95 basis points in the fourth quarter of 2025. Verizon disclosed that promotional customer acquisition costs declined about 15% year over year and retention costs fell about 17%. Hence, the important driver is not only higher gross adds but also lower churn. This shows improving customer economics and greater operating leverage for Verizon. Verizon has taken several approaches to further boost customer economics. In the second quarter, the company launched its Simplicity wireless plan, Verizon One and a companywide loyalty program. These offerings are designed to reduce churn and increase customer lifetime value. Verizon is increasingly using its wireless and broadband assets together. The Verizon One offering combines mobility and broadband into a single offering. The bundled offering also simplifies the customer experience. By opting for a single service provider for all internet requirements, users can bypass the billing, service and customer support-related complexities from several vendors. For Verizon, it increases customer stickiness, bringing significant cross-selling opportunities. AI Infrastructure Investment is Becoming a New Growth Vector Google has signed an agreement worth more than $1 billion to use Verizon's dark-fiber routes to connect its data centers. Verizon boasts an extensive metro fiber network that can offer low-latency and resilient connectivity needed to link data centers. Verizon is also converting some of its existing central offices into edge data centers to support AI inference closer to end users. The company is reportedly exploring deals with other hyperscalers as well. These AI infrastructure-related initiatives can become a major revenue-generating source for the next several years. Story Continues Major Challenges for Verizon Fixed wireless access (FWA) remains an important growth engine for the company. However, FWA net additions fell 30.6% year over year to 193,000 in the second quarter. Clearly, growth momentum has weakened to some extent. At the end of the second quarter of 2026, total unsecured debt stood at $136.5 billion, while net unsecured debt totaled $128.7 billion. Although both balances improved from the first quarter through stronger cash generation and debt reduction, net unsecured debt to adjusted EBITDA remained 2.5x. As of 2026, Verizon's current ratio stood at 0.60, while its quick ratio was 0.57. A current ratio of lower than 1 suggests that the company might face difficulties in paying off short-term obligations. Verizon continues to operate in a mature U.S. wireless market where national carriers and cable competitors compete aggressively on pricing, promotions and bundled offerings. The company faces competition from other major players, such as AT&T, Inc. T and T-Mobile, US, Inc. TMUS. AT&T is rapidly expanding its fiber infrastructure and has also undertaken a convergence strategy to drive user growth. Price Performance Verizon has gained 8.2% in the past year compared with the Wireless National industry's growth of 79%. The stock has underperformed the Zacks Computer & Technology sector during this time period.Zacks Investment Research Image Source:
["Market update", "VZ", "T
Earnings estimates for AT&T, Inc. T for fiscal 2026 and fiscal 2027 have moved up 1.29% to $2.35 and 1.18% to $2.57, respectively, over the past 60 days. The positive estimate revision depicts bullish sentiments about the stock's growth potential.Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research T Rides on Solid Wireless and Fiber Traction, Convergence Strategy AT&T is aggressively expanding its fiber footprint. It added more than 1 million fiber locations in the second quarter. Total fiber locations reached are now 38.6 million. The company expects to exceed 40 million locations by the end of 2026 and reach more than 60 million by 2030. The acquisition of Lumen's mass-market fiber business has accelerated AT&T's fiber expansion strategy. Wireless remains a major contributor to overall growth. AT&T added 432,000 postpaid phone customers in the second quarter, with churn of just 0.86%. The company added 279,000 fixed wireless connections in the second quarter. The company has been taking several steps to become the customer's single connectivity provider by bundling home internet and wireless. In the second quarter, 42.5% of advanced home internet customers also had an AT&T postpaid wireless account. When customers get dependent on multiple services from a single vendor, it becomes difficult for them to change service providers. This higher switching friction lowers churn rate and boosts customer retention. This significantly boosts the company's cross-selling opportunities as well. AI Infrastructure Expansion Can Be a Growth Opportunity in the Long Run The rising usage of Agentic AI is driving network traffic growth. To support the significant surge of data traffic, the companies need a network that can support near-real-time communication, high bandwidth and significantly greater uplink capacity. A major part of AI processing is expected to move closer to the end user, or the edge, to reduce latency. With a dense metro fiber network combined with nationwide wireless spectrum, AT&T can benefit from this AI infrastructure expansion initiative. Major Challenges for T AT&T's growth strategy is heavily reliant on continued investment in fiber and wireless infrastructure. The company is expanding fiber aggressively while also investing in its wireless network and spectrum. Such a high capex requirement may impact free cash flow growth in the near term. AT&T is competing for both wireless and broadband customers. Rivals like Verizon and T-Mobile are also expanding network infrastructure and taking several approaches to drive customer addition. Verizon has also taken a convergence strategy to improve churn rate. Stiff competition in a saturated telecom market is impacting margins. Amid this high investment requirement, AT&T's leveraged balance sheet remains a major concern. Net debt-to-adjusted EBITDA was 2.68X at the end of second-quarter 2026, with total debt of $144 billion and cash and equivalents of $17.6 billion. Management expects leverage to rise to about 3.2X after the planned EchoStar spectrum acquisition, before returning to the 2.5X range within about three years. The company also plans $23 to $24 billion of annual capital investment and $10 billion of 2026 buybacks, leaving less flexibility if operating execution weakens. Story Continues Price Performance AT&T has lost 14% in the past year compared with the Wireless National industry's decline of 78.9%. The stock has also underperformed the Zacks Computer & Technology sector and the S&P 500's growth during this period.Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research The company has underperformed its peers like Verizon Communications Inc. Beyond Space: AI Compute & Starlink Drive SpaceX Growth The Average IPO Corrects Roughly 50% Earlier this year, Space Exploration Technologies became the largest initial public offering (IPO) in history with a valuation near $2 trillion. Despite SpaceX's size, its near-monopoly in its industry, and being one of the most hyped IPOs ever, shares fell from a high of $225.78 to a low of $105.62. History teaches investors that such corrections are the norm. In fact, within one year of its debut, the average tech IPO sees a drawdown of 55% from its peak. SpaceX just witnessed a 53% drawdown. Whether it was due to psychology or mispricing, the correction in SpaceX shares is no surprise to seasoned investors. In fact, long-term market winners like Meta Platforms, Palantir and Snowflake all suffered 50% drawdowns early on before beginning their uptrends. SpaceX Earnings & Guidance Impress Last week, SpaceX delivered earnings that beat Wall Street expectations. Revenue jumped 92% year-over-year to $7.8 billion while net losses narrowed to $143 million versus $541 million. EPS of -$0.09 beat Zacks Consensus Estimates by a juicy 65.38%. However, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk's guidance was even more intriguing. Musk now expects SpaceX to reach $1 trillion in revenue by 2030 with a "non-zero" chance of reaching it in 2029. Additionally, Musk expects annual recurring revenue (ARR) to explode to $100 billion by year-end (up from a $10.4 billion run rate in June). xAI Segment is on Fire Although SpaceX is known for being a space company, its fastest-growing business segment is AI hardware. Top-line growth is being driven by lucrative contracts from AI giants Alphabet and Anthropic. Compute revenue reached $2.6 billion (+247% YoY). Meanwhile, in the earnings call, management projected that SpaceX is now targeting 10 gigawatts (GW) of compute for 2027. Currently, SpaceX has ~1GW of compute. Starlink is Disrupting the Telecom Space Starlink, SpaceX's satellite internet service, is also experiencing rapid growth. Connectivity revenue reached $4.3 billion, up 66% year-over-year, while subscribers doubled year-over-year to 12 million. On the earnings call, Musk highlighted the company's V3 satellite, saying: "Starlink V3 satellite is about an order of magnitude more capable than the Starlink V2...even if our monetization per bit dropped by a factor of 10, that would still mean a 10x increase in the revenue of Starlink." Story Continues Meanwhile, Starlink is expanding beyond remote home broadband to higher average revenue per user (ARPU) businesses like enterprise, aviation, maritime, and defense. Also, Starlink will be unveiling a direct-to-cell mobile connectivity service to take on legacy telecom companies like AT&T and T-Mobile. Starship is a Massive Catalyst Starship is SpaceX's game-changing rocket, currently in testing, and the largest flying manmade object. In July, Starship's 13th test flight achieved several monumental firsts including: · Heatshield Success: Starship's heat shield survived atmospheric reentry entirely intact for the first time. · Satellite Deployment: Starship successfully deployed 20 next-gen Starlink V3 satellites in orbit. · Reusability: The Super Heavy booster achieved a controlled descent (although it had a hard splashdown), getting the Starship one step closer to reusability. Starship will have its next test soon. Once Starship is up and running it will be able to deliver up to 300 metric tons to space (~5x more than its Falcon 9 rocket). CAPEX Normalization Like many big tech companies, SpaceX's capital expenditures soared. CAPEX grew more than 600% to $18.37 billion. A surge in crude oil prices, combined with underperformance across key technology stocks, further pressured the broader market. In an environment marked by heightened geopolitical volatility and macro uncertainty, pivoting to financially resilient companies — specifically low-leverage stocks backed by strong balance sheets — offers a prudent defensive strategy for equity investors. These fiscally conservative companies are better positioned to navigate interest rate fluctuations and geopolitical uncertainty. By providing a stable foundation in a shifting market, they can serve as a strategic hedge against a potential energy-driven economic slowdown. We recommend low-leverage stocks, such as LifeStance Health Group LFST, Tutor Perini TPC, Valero Energy VLO, SharkNinja, Inc. SN and Lumentum LITE. Before selecting low-leverage stocks, it is important to understand what leverage is and how investing in low-leverage companies can benefit investors. What's the Significance of Low-Leverage Stocks? In finance, leverage refers to the use of borrowed capital to support business operations and drive expansion. Companies typically raise such funds through debt financing, although equity financing remains an alternative. However, firms often prefer debt due to its relatively lower cost and easier availability compared to issuing equity. Debt financing comes with inherent risks and is beneficial only when it generates returns that exceed the cost of borrowing. To limit downside risk, investors should be cautious of companies that rely excessively on debt. Prudent investing involves selecting businesses with manageable leverage, as completely debt-free companies are rare. The equity market can be volatile at times. As an investor, if you want to avoid significant losses, we suggest focusing on stocks with low leverage, which are generally deemed less risky. To identify such stocks, several leverage ratios have historically been developed to measure the amount of debt a company carries. The debt-to-equity ratio is among the most widely used financial ratios. Analyzing Debt/Equity Debt-to-Equity Ratio = Total Liabilities/Shareholders' Equity This metric is a liquidity ratio that indicates the amount of financial risk a company bears. A lower debt-to-equity ratio suggests improved solvency for a company. Story Continues With the second-quarter 2026 earnings season almost in its last lap, investors should focus on stocks that have demonstrated solid earnings growth in recent periods. If a stock carries a high debt-to-equity ratio during an economic downturn, its seemingly strong earnings could quickly turn into a nightmare. The Winning Strategy Considering the aforementioned factors, it would be prudent to choose stocks with a low debt-to-equity ratio to ensure steady returns. Yet, an investment strategy based solely on the debt-to-equity ratio might not fetch the desired outcome. To select stocks with the potential to provide steady returns, we have expanded our screening criteria to include additional factors. That gives value-focused investors a reason to look closer. The discount comes with material conditions. Leverage remains elevated, earnings expectations have fallen and restructuring needs are rising, leaving the near-term case dependent on execution rather than valuation alone. TELUS Trades Below Its Historical EV/EBITDA Median TELUS trades at 7.42X trailing 12-month enterprise value to EBITDA, below the Zacks sub-industry's 8.16X and its five-year median of 8.66X. The stock's Value Score of B reinforces the view that valuation is one of its stronger attributes.Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Peer results show why price alone is not enough. BCE Inc. BCE reported second-quarter 2026 consolidated revenue growth of 1.5% and adjusted EBITDA growth of 1.0%. AT&T Inc. T posted 2.3% revenue growth and 5.2% adjusted EBITDA growth, highlighting the importance of operating execution alongside a lower multiple. TU Health and Connectivity Still Support Cash Generation TELUS Health service revenues rose 4% to C$533 million in the second quarter of 2026. Adjusted EBITDA less capital expenditures increased 41% to C$55 million, giving the segment a lower-capital-intensity contribution to consolidated cash generation. TTech remained comparatively resilient. Mobile network revenue increased 1%, while adjusted EBITDA was nearly unchanged at C$1,639 million despite softer subscriber demand and pricing pressure. That stability matters while TELUS works through weakness in other parts of the portfolio. TELUS Leverage Keeps the Value Case Conditional TELUS ended the second quarter with C$26.0 billion of net debt and net debt to adjusted EBITDA of 3.5 times. Its target of about 3.0 times or lower has been pushed to year-end 2028 from 2027, extending the period in which balance-sheet repair remains a central priority. The 55% quarterly dividend reset is expected to save about C$2.7 billion cumulatively through 2028 for debt reduction. Asset monetization, disciplined capital spending and a moratorium on acquisitions add support, but the path still depends on stronger organic free cash flow. TU Estimate Cuts Argue for Patience on Earnings The Zacks Consensus Estimate for current-year earnings has fallen 19.8% over the past four weeks. TELUS also reduced 2026 free cash flow guidance to about C$1.8 billion from C$2.45 billion, reflecting lower adjusted EBITDA, higher capital spending and incremental restructuring cash costs. Story Continues TELUS Corporation Price, Consensus and EPS SurpriseTELUS Corporation Price, Consensus and EPS Surprise TELUS Corporation price-consensus-eps-surprise-chart | TELUS Corporation Quote Execution risk remains visible. TELUS raised its 2026 restructuring and other cost assumption to about C$900 million, while TELUS Digital continues to face structural pressure in legacy services. Those pressures accompany the valuation discount and keep near-term earnings visibility limited. TELUS Value Score Outruns Growth and Momentum The bottom line is that TELUS has identifiable value and cash-generating assets, but the earnings and leverage backdrop keeps the discount from standing on its own. Investors focused on valuation have reasons to monitor the stock, though a clearer improvement in execution would strengthen the case. TELUS currently carries a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell), alongside a Value Score of B, Growth Score of C, Momentum Score of F and VGM Score of C. AMX combines continued postpaid and broadband growth with healthy cash generation, while its shares trade above both sub-industry and five-year median book-value benchmarks. For investors considering a fresh position, the question is whether recurring revenue growth and disciplined capital allocation can offset the premium valuation and execution risks. AMX's Valuation Leaves Less Room for Error AMX trades at 2.85X trailing 12-month book value, well above the 1.35X level for its Zacks sub-industry. The stock also sits above its five-year median of 2.64X. That premium raises the bar for execution. Continued subscriber gains, cost control and margin improvement become more important when investors are paying above both the peer benchmark and the stock's own historical norm. America Movil's Cash Generation Supports Flexibility First-half 2026 cash generation covered Mex$48 billion of capital expenditures, Mex$4.6 billion of share buybacks and Mex$8.4 billion of labor obligations. Net debt declined by Mex$30.9 billion in cash-flow terms.Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Net debt excluding capitalized leases ended June at Mex$402 billion, equal to 1.31 times last-12-month EBITDA after leases. That keeps AMX within management's 1.2-1.5 times leverage range while it funds investments and acquisition commitments. AMX's Subscriber Mix Supports Recurring Revenue Postpaid users increased 9.1% year over year in the second quarter, while broadband accesses rose 6.1%. AMX added 3.5 million postpaid subscribers and 531,000 broadband accesses during the period. Prepaid users fell by 3.7 million after customer-base cleanups in Colombia and Argentina. Management expects migration from prepaid to postpaid to continue over the next five years, supporting more recurring service revenues. America Movil Still Faces Execution Risks Brazil remains a competitive pressure point, with management citing more aggressive promotions in prepaid and postpaid. TIM S.A. TIMB targets roughly 5% service revenue growth and 6%-8% EBITDA growth in 2026, providing a useful operating benchmark in that market. Telefônica Brasil S.A. VIV reported 105.1 million mobile lines and 37.8% mobile market share as of the second quarter. AMX also faces Mexico's prepaid registration transition, currency volatility, macroeconomic uncertainty and acquisition commitments. AMX's Earnings Profile Sends Mixed Signals Second-quarter net income increased 9.2% year over year to Mex$24.3 billion. EBITDA rose 5.3% at constant exchange rates and would have increased 6.7% excluding a one-off charge in Mexico. Story Continues Still, earnings per ADR of 47 cents missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 52 cents. With the shares carrying a valuation premium, sustained operating leverage is important because weaker execution would leave less room for disappointment. AMX's Mixed Scores Favor Patience The operating picture supports AMX, but the valuation and execution risks argue against treating the stock as an obvious buy. The current balance is more consistent with patience than with an aggressive entry. AMX currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), along with a Value Score of A, Growth Score of F, Momentum Score of A and VGM Score of B. The Style Scores complement the Zacks Rank rather than replace it. Favorable Value and Momentum characteristics contrast with a weak Growth profile, while the #3 Rank keeps the near-term signal neutral. AMX shares have fallen 11.1% over the past 12 weeks, even as subscriber and service trends remain constructive. The pullback puts a sharper focus on whether operating momentum can outweigh competitive and currency pressure. The latest quarter offers support for the bull case, but not a clean all-clear. Brazil rivalry, exchange-rate translation and capital demands still weigh on earnings visibility and financial flexibility. AMX's 3-Month Slide Tests the Bull Case AMX's price weakness contrasts with a 9.1% year-over-year increase in postpaid users. Fixed-line service revenue growth accelerated to 2.7% from 1.7% in the prior quarter, while EBITDA increased 5.3% at constant exchange rates. Those figures show that the stock decline has not been matched by a broad deterioration in operations. The risk is that more promotions and currency translation could blunt the benefit from that operating progress. America Movil's Postpaid Growth Stays Firm América Móvil added 3.5 million postpaid subscribers in the second quarter, with Brazil accounting for 1.5 million. Broadband access increased 6.1% year over year, reinforcing the role of postpaid and fixed-broadband customers in the company's growth mix. Management expects migration from prepaid to postpaid to continue over the next five years, supporting more recurring service revenues. That trend gives AMX a potential offset to volatility in prepaid subscriber counts. AMX Faces Tougher Pricing in Brazil Brazil's mobile service revenue rose 6.1% and postpaid revenue increased 7.1%, but management said promotions became more aggressive in both prepaid and postpaid. AMX has been matching competitors when needed, which could limit pricing flexibility and slow margin expansion if discounting persists. Telefônica Brasil S.A. VIV, which operates Vivo, reported second-quarter revenue of R$15.8 billion and EBITDA of R$6.6 billion, underscoring the scale of competition in Brazil. TIM S.A. TIMB also continues to invest in network reach and says its 5G footprint has reached 1,000 cities. AMX therefore faces rivals with substantial scale and network investment behind their offers. America Movil's FX and Leverage Risks Persist Reported service revenue increased 3.4% year over year, compared with 5.1% at constant exchange rates. The gap illustrates how currency translation can obscure underlying operating momentum in reported Mexican peso results.Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Financial flexibility is another constraint. Net debt excluding capitalized leases was Mex$402 billion at June, equal to 1.31 times last-12-month EBITDA after leases, and management plans to keep leverage between 1.2 and 1.5 times while funding committed investments. That range limits how far deleveraging can go in the near term. Story Continues AMX Signals Favor Value and Momentum AMX's 11.1% slide lowers the entry price relative to 12 weeks ago, but it does not remove the operating risks. Subscriber growth and service momentum provide support, while Brazil promotions, foreign-exchange swings and capital commitments argue against treating the pullback alone as a buy signal. AMX currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), alongside a Value Score of A, a Growth Score of F, a Momentum Score of A and a VGM Score of B. The A readings for Value and Momentum and the B VGM Score are favorable Style Score signals, while the F Growth Score is a clear offset. Because Style Scores complement the Zacks Rank, the combination supports patience rather than a strongly directional call. SpaceX just witnessed a 53% drawdown.Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Whether it was due to psychology or mispricing, the correction in SpaceX shares is no surprise to seasoned investors. In fact, long-term market winners like Meta Platforms (META),Palantir (PLTR), and Snowflake (SNOW) all suffered 50% drawdowns early on before beginning their uptrends. SpaceX Earnings & Guidance Impress Last week, SpaceX delivered earnings that beat Wall Street expectations. Revenue jumped 92% year-over-year to $7.8 billion while net losses narrowed to $143 million versus $541 million. EPS of -$0.09 beat Zacks Consensus Estimates by a juicy 65.38%.Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research However, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk's guidance was even more intriguing. Top-line growth is being driven by lucrative contracts from AI giants Alphabet (GOOGL) and Anthropic. Compute revenue reached $2.6 billion (+247% YoY). Meanwhile, in the earnings call, management projected that SpaceX is now targeting 10 gigawatts (GW) of compute for 2027. Currently, SpaceX has ~1GW of compute.Zacks Investment Research Image Source: SemiAnalysis Starlink is Disrupting the Telecom Space Starlink, SpaceX's satellite internet service, is also experiencing rapid growth. Connectivity revenue reached $4.3 billion, up 66% year-over-year, while subscribers doubled year-over-year to 12 million. On the earnings call, Musk highlighted the company's V3 satellite, saying: "Starlink V3 satellite is about an order of magnitude more capable than the Starlink V2…even if our monetization per bit dropped by a factor of 10, that would still mean a 10x increase in the revenue of Starlink." Story Continues Meanwhile, Starlink is expanding beyond remote home broadband to higher average revenue per user (ARPU) businesses like enterprise, aviation, maritime, and defense. Also, Starlink will be unveiling a direct-to-cell mobile connectivity service to take on legacy telecom companies like AT&T (T) and T-Mobile (TMUS). However, as the hyper-aggressive CAPEX cycle (driven by AI buildouts and Starship R&D) normalizes, free cash flow generation will explode. The deal delivers a striking contrast in value: according to Reviews.org's State of Consumer Media Spending report, the average customer on a Big Three carrier — AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon — pays $57.96 per month for cell service. PureTalk's promotional pricing means three full months of unlimited service costs just $45 total, less than the price of a single month with a Big Three carrier. Unlike many other MVNOs that require customers to prepay for the full promotional term upfront, PureTalk bills month-to-month, so customers pay just $15 at the start of each of the first three months. The offer is valid for new customers who activate service by September 8, 2026. "MVNOs deserve more attention," said Kelly Huh, Deputy Editor at Reviews.org. "You're paying a fraction of what the 'Big Three' charge, but getting the same network coverage since MVNOs run on that same infrastructure." Even after the promotional period ends, MVNOs like PureTalk typically remain less expensive than other carriers while offering comparable coverage — PureTalk runs on AT&T's nationwide network, giving customers access to the same infrastructure at a fraction of the cost. "PureTalk is a solid option if you live in an area with strong AT&T coverage but don't want to spend over $50 just for quality cell service," Huh said. Though many consumers are unfamiliar with the term, MVNOs like PureTalk rent network capacity directly from major carriers, giving customers access to the same coverage without the cost of maintaining that infrastructure. That savings translates directly to lower prices and fewer fees. What Happens After the Promotional Period Once the promotional period ends, PureTalk customers continue to benefit from straightforward pricing and nationwide coverage — without the higher costs typically associated with larger mobile carriers. This includes: Unlimited talk, text, and data plans ranging from $24.99–$64.99/month, with 7GB to 50GB of high-speed data Mobile hotspot data and international roaming on plans $34.99 and up, with a second phone number and Apple Watch plan available on higher tiers A 30-day money-back guarantee and no annual contract A 20% discount for military members and first responders, starting in month four Continued access to AT&T's nationwide 5G network Learn more about PureTalk here: https://www.puretalk.com/ ### View Comments
["Market update", "VZ", "T
Discussing your kid's smartphone use can feel overwhelming. Media reports about these brokerage-firm-employed (or sell-side) analysts changing their ratings often affect a stock's price. Do they really matter, though? Before we discuss the reliability of brokerage recommendations and how to use them to your advantage, let's see what these Wall Street heavyweights think about Tutor Perini (TPC). Tutor Perini currently has an average brokerage recommendation (ABR) of 1.40, on a scale of 1 to 5 (Strong Buy to Strong Sell), calculated based on the actual recommendations (Buy, Hold, Sell, etc.) made by five brokerage firms. An ABR of 1.40 approximates between Strong Buy and Buy. Of the five recommendations that derive the current ABR, four are Strong Buy, representing 80% of all recommendations. Brokerage Recommendation Trends for TPCBroker Rating Breakdown Chart for TPC Check price target & stock forecast for Tutor Perini here>>> While the ABR calls for buying Tutor Perini, it may not be wise to make an investment decision solely based on this information. Several studies have shown limited to no success of brokerage recommendations in guiding investors to pick stocks with the best price increase potential. Are you wondering why? The vested interest of brokerage firms in a stock they cover often results in a strong positive bias of their analysts in rating it. Our research shows that for every "Strong Sell" recommendation, brokerage firms assign five "Strong Buy" recommendations. This means that the interests of these institutions are not always aligned with those of retail investors, giving little insight into the direction of a stock's future price movement. It would therefore be best to use this information to validate your own analysis or a tool that has proven to be highly effective at predicting stock price movements. With an impressive externally audited track record, our proprietary stock rating tool, the Zacks Rank, which classifies stocks into five groups, ranging from Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) to Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell), is a reliable indicator of a stock's near-term price performance. So, validating the Zacks Rank with ABR could go a long way in making a profitable investment decision. Zacks Rank Should Not Be Confused With ABR Although both Zacks Rank and ABR are displayed in a range of 1--5, they are different measures altogether. The ABR is calculated solely based on brokerage recommendations and is typically displayed with decimals (example: 1.28). In contrast, the Zacks Rank is a quantitative model allowing investors to harness the power of earnings estimate revisions. It is displayed in whole numbers -- 1 to 5. Story Continues Analysts employed by brokerage firms have been and continue to be overly optimistic with their recommendations. Since the ratings issued by these analysts are more favorable than their research would support because of the vested interest of their employers, they mislead investors far more often than they guide. In contrast, the Zacks Rank is driven by earnings estimate revisions. And near-term stock price movements are strongly correlated with trends in earnings estimate revisions, according to empirical research. Furthermore, the different grades of the Zacks Rank are applied proportionately across all stocks for which brokerage analysts provide earnings estimates for the current year. In other words, at all times, this tool maintains a balance among the five ranks it assigns. There is also a key difference between the ABR and Zacks Rank when it comes to freshness. When you look at the ABR, it may not be up-to-date. Nonetheless, since brokerage analysts constantly revise their earnings estimates to reflect changing business trends, and their actions get reflected in the Zacks Rank quickly enough, it is always timely in predicting future stock prices. Oil prices have stabilized, and hopes of a deal between Iran and Oman have brightened. Yet uncertainty related to the economy's health, peace talks between the United States and Iran, and the Federal Reserve's plans for future rate hikes has been weighing on investors' sentiment. Amid the ongoing uncertainty, conservative investors seeking a reliable source of income while protecting their capital may want to consider dividend-paying stocks. These stocks can provide consistent earnings through regular dividend payments while helping cushion portfolios against market volatility. Here are three such stocks: Dover Corporation DOV, KLA Corporation KLAC and Tutor Perini Corporation TPC. Wall Street Volatility Continues Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have left markets volatile for months. Major indexes rallied last week after tech stocks rebounded from a sell-off, triggered by concerns over the sustainability of AI-related chip stocks and the continued hefty investments being made by tech giants in AI infrastructure. On Monday, investors' sentiment got a boost on hopes that Iran and Oman could soon reach a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. However, Iran has remained stubborn about restarting negotiations with the United States until several conditions are fulfilled by the latter. Investors are also optimistic that the Federal Reserve could delay its rate hike plans after the July nonfarm payrolls report showed that jobs contracted unexpectedly in the month. However, the Federal Reserve hasn't given any hint on its plans for rate cuts in the near term. Also, the U.S.-Iran conflict is far from over. Inflation eased in June after oil prices eased but is still sharply above the Fed's 2% target. Hence, uncertainties prevail, which could keep markets volatile for a longer period. 3 Stocks That Recently Announced Dividend Hikes Dover Corporation Dover Corporation is an industrial conglomerate producing a wide range of specialized industrial products and manufacturing equipment. A number of stocks jumped in the after-market session after the July jobs report showed an unexpected loss of 23,000 jobs, signaling a cooling labor market. Economists had forecast a gain of around 80,000 nonfarm payrolls. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate held steady at 4.1%. This weaker-than-expected data led investors to bet on the possibility of an interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve. The logic, often described as "bad news is good news" for the market, suggests that a slowing economy could deter the central bank from further rate hikes, and potentially encourage cuts to stimulate growth. This outlook generally makes borrowing cheaper for companies and increases the relative attractiveness of stocks. OPTU is expanding its mobile business, improving operating efficiency and investing in network modernization. However, declining residential revenue, elevated leverage and negative free cash flow complicate the investment case. The stock's Zacks Rank and Style Scores point to a setup that may favor patience over an aggressive buy decision. OPTU's Mobile Growth Strengthens the Bull Case Optimum added 50,000 mobile lines in the second quarter, bringing its total to 724,000. Mobile penetration of the broadband base increased to 8.9%, while mobile service revenue jumped 40% year over year to $53 million. The mobile business gives Optimum an avenue to diversify beyond its pressured broadband operations. Higher mobile penetration also supports the company's convergence strategy, which seeks to deepen customer relationships through multiple services. Optimum Still Faces a Shrinking Core Business The gains in mobile have not yet offset weakness in Optimum's core residential operations. Residential revenue declined 6.7% year over year, with broadband and video subscriber losses weighing on results. The revenue outlook remains challenging. Zacks estimates total sales will decline from $8.108 billion in 2026 to $7.668 billion in 2027. The projected decline underscores the difficulty Optimum faces in turning newer growth initiatives into enough incremental revenue to offset pressure in its established businesses.Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Larger telecom operators such as AT&T Inc. T and Verizon Communications Inc. VZ also face competitive pressures, but their broader wireless and connectivity businesses provide more diversified sources of revenue. For OPTU, broadband remains a much more important part of the operating equation. OPTU's Efficiency Gains Cushion Revenue Pressure Optimum is finding ways to reduce costs even as revenue declines. Adjusted EBITDA fell 2.2% year over year to $785.7 million, but the adjusted EBITDA margin expanded to 38.8%. Operational improvements are contributing to the margin performance. Truck rolls and service calls declined more than 20% year over year, while operating expenses excluding share-based compensation fell 5% year to date. These savings can cushion the impact of lower revenue, although they may not fully offset the pressure if the company's top line continues to contract. Sustaining these efficiencies while investing in the network will be important to the company's earnings outlook. Optimum's Balance Sheet Raises the Stakes Story Continues Leverage remains one of the biggest risks to the OPTU investment case. Net debt stood at $25.33 billion and net leverage was 8.0X as of June 30. The debt burden becomes more important as significant maturities begin in 2027. Optimum also reported negative free cash flow of $91.9 million in the second quarter, limiting the cushion available to reduce debt while funding network investments. The balance-sheet risk sets OPTU apart from larger peers such as T and VZ, which have greater scale and more diversified cash-generation profiles. For Optimum, improving operating results will be important not only for growth but also for maintaining financial flexibility.Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research OPTU's Scores Favor Patience Over Conviction OPTU currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), with a Value Score of B, Growth Score of D and Momentum Score of D. The Style Scores are designed to complement the Zacks Rank by assessing a stock's value, growth and momentum characteristics. The B Value Score indicates that valuation characteristics are more favorable than the stock's growth and momentum profiles. However, the D Growth Score reflects the pressure from declining sales and the company's challenging operating outlook, while the D Momentum Score indicates that recent price trends remain unfavorable. OPTU have declined 28% in the past month, putting the spotlight on whether the sharp pullback reflects deteriorating fundamentals or creates an opportunity if the company's operational initiatives gain traction. Compared with larger telecom peers such as AT&T Inc. T and Verizon Communications Inc. VZ, Optimum faces a more challenging near-term growth profile, particularly in broadband.Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research OPTU Faces Persistent Broadband Competition Optimum's broadband business remains under pressure. Broadband primary service units declined by 40,000 in the second quarter, compared with a 35,000 loss in the year-ago period. Elevated promotions and intense competition in the company's West footprint continue to pressure churn and make subscriber stabilization uncertain. This contrasts with the broader operating trends at larger peers. Verizon has been benefiting from improving wireless subscriber trends and broadband expansion, while AT&T is also pursuing growth through wireless and fiber connectivity. Optimum's Revenue Trends Remain Challenged Residential revenues fell 6.7% year over year to $1.54 billion in the second quarter, while residential ARPU declined 1.1% to $132.22. The company's total revenue fell 5.8% year over year to $2.02 billion. Optimum expects full-year 2026 revenue to decline in the mid-single digits. This outlook leaves the company facing a more difficult growth environment than larger telecom operators that are benefiting from expanding broadband, wireless or fiber businesses. OPTU Shows Progress Beyond Broadband Optimum is making progress in mobile and newer video offerings. Mobile lines increased by 50,000 to 724,000, while mobile penetration rose to 8.9%. Newer video packages also reached 18% of the residential video base. The company's convergence strategy could help improve customer retention by encouraging households to purchase multiple services. Optimum reported that convergence ARPU increased 2.4% year over year to $79.80 in the second quarter, providing one of the clearer offsets to weakness in the core broadband business. Verizon is pursuing a similar convergence strategy through wireless and broadband offerings, while AT&T is also investing in integrated connectivity. This makes customer retention and cross-selling important competitive factors across the telecom industry. Optimum Balances Efficiency With Heavy Investment Optimum is making progress on costs. Adjusted EBITDA declined 2.2% year over year to $785.7 million, but the adjusted EBITDA margin expanded 140 basis points to 38.8%. Operating expenses, excluding share-based compensation, improved 5% year to date through the second quarter. Still, management expects EBITDA to decline in the low to mid-single digits in 2026. Capital spending also remains substantial, with full-year capital expenditures expected at $1.2 billion to $1.5 billion. The capital intensity highlights the challenge for OPTU. The company must continue investing in its network and customer offerings while managing declining revenue and EBITDA. Larger peers face similar capital requirements, but Verizon, for example, expects 2026 mobility and broadband service revenue to grow 2%-3% while maintaining substantial investment in network infrastructure. Story Continues AT&T and Verizon Offer Different Risk Profiles AT&T and Verizon provide useful benchmarks for investors assessing OPTU's recent decline. Verizon carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), along with a Value Score of A, Growth Score of C and Momentum Score of A. Its shares had gained 18.3% over the six months covered in the available Zacks report, supported by improving operating trends and a higher 2026 earnings outlook. Optimum's profile is less favorable from a growth and momentum perspective. The stock has a Value Score of B, but its Growth Score and Momentum Score are both D. Starlink Mobile Raises Questions Over Consumer Appeal "You've got to ask the question of 'What is the gap in the market that they're looking to serve?'" Gopalan told the Financial Times on Thursday. "Why would a customer buy a new cellular service? These 50 Must-Know Terms Can Help You Catch Up Fast SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell said Starlink intends to become "a true mobile service" and expects to "acquire quite a few" customers from the Big Three. Reuters reported earlier this week that SpaceX bought 65 MHz of EchoStar Corp. spectrum for $19.6 billion through two deals, strengthening its push into a market that has already pressured traditional telecom stocks. Musk said Starlink's planned terrestrial network would "probably" offer better connectivity and "higher bandwidth than what is currently available from cellular providers." Shotwell said SpaceX plans to launch Starlink Mobile satellites next year and start service by the end of 2027. Satellite Networks Face Tough Terrestrial Competition Analysts say matching incumbent networks will be difficult. New Street Research analyst David Barden told Reuters earlier this week that it "makes no sense" for SpaceX to replicate networks built over three decades with about 1,000 MHz of spectrum using only 65 MHz. Gopalan argued satellite service will remain "complementary" to terrestrial networks. T-Mobile already uses Starlink through T-Satellite, which connects compatible phones outside normal cellular coverage. The FCC has authorized SpaceX to provide supplemental coverage using T-Mobile spectrum and approved 7,500 additional Gen2 satellites in January to support enhanced mobile connectivity. T-Mobile launched SuperBroadband in April, combining its 5G network with Starlink backup for remote businesses. T-Satellite also supports apps including WhatsApp, Google Maps and X in dead zones. T-Mobile Maintains Postpaid Growth Outlook T-Mobile added 277,000 postpaid net accounts in the second quarter of 2026, beating consensus estimates, though additions fell 13% from a year earlier. The company expects roughly 250,000 postpaid net account additions in the third quarter as it migrates customers to newer, higher-priced plans, with about 60% of new customers currently choosing its most premium offerings. "I think the most misunderstood thing from an investor perspective is just the amount of growth left in this business," Gopalan said. "And I think we're ridiculously undervalued right now." According to Benzinga Edge Rankings, TMUS ranks in the 59th percentile for Quality and carries negative ratings across its short, medium and long-term price trends. Comcast Business now delivers cellular coverage and a private network for cameras, access control, and occupancy sensors through a single platform built on licensed CBRS spectrum. It is not an isolated experiment either. Comcast has already rolled out similar systems at the University of Virginia, The Sound Hotel Seattle Belltown, and Rocket Arena for the Cleveland Cavaliers, and the company is positioning Smartlink as a replicable model for other commercial landlords. That enterprise push sits on top of a business that still throws off enormous cash. Comcast generated free cash flow of nearly $21.9 billion in fiscal 2025 on revenue of about $123.7 billion, with net income near $20.0 billion, a net margin of 16.2%. Peacock turned profitable for the first time, wireless lines crossed a major subscriber milestone, and the company beat earnings estimates in its most recent quarter. Following the separation of Versant Media Group, management has also sharpened its focus toward the Content and Experiences segments, spanning film, television, and theme parks, giving the enterprise wireless buildout room to grow alongside a leaner core. Bear Case: The Cable Business Still Has A Leak The residential side of the business tells a different story. Broadband subscribers keep declining, and fiber operators and fixed wireless providers like Verizon and T-Mobile keep pressing on price and coverage. Comcast paused its share buyback program ahead of a planned NBCUniversal spinoff, a move that adds another layer of complexity for investors trying to track where the company is headed. Security and legal costs have also piled up. Comcast agreed to a $117.5 million settlement over an Xfinity data breach, and cyberattack risk remains an ongoing concern given the scale of its subscriber base. The company also absorbed a noncash impairment charge of $8.6 billion tied to a Sky writedown, and rising costs for sports rights including the NFL and NBA are squeezing profitability in the media segment. With a debt-to-equity ratio of 1.1x and a current ratio of 0.9x, the balance sheet leaves less cushion than some peers to absorb further shocks. Story Continues What The Smart Money Is Doing Hedge fund ownership of Comcast fell to 78 funds in the most recent quarter from 95 the quarter before, which reads as institutional trimming rather than accumulation. Short interest sits at just 2.71% of float. The forward P/E of 7.30x remains low by market standards as of August 7, suggesting the stock is priced for limited growth. That combination, funds stepping back even as the multiple stays cheap, is the tension worth watching. Where This Leaves Investors Comcast is trying to build a new growth engine in enterprise wireless while its legacy broadband business keeps losing subscribers to fiber and fixed wireless rivals. The Smartlink deployment and the string of hospitality and stadium wins before it suggest Comcast Business could become a more meaningful part of the story if the replicable model actually scales. Tutor Perini Investment Narrative Recap To own Tutor Perini, you need to believe its record backlog and focus on mega projects can translate into steadier profitability, without repeating past contract and litigation issues. The latest results and capital returns strengthen the case that near term earnings execution is the key catalyst, while execution risk on large, complex public jobs remains the biggest swing factor. The Q2 beats and higher dividend support the story, but do not remove that core project risk. The 50% dividend increase to US$0.09 per share stands out here, as it directly connects stronger profitability with shareholder cash returns. Coupled with the completed US$29.99 million buyback, it suggests management is more confident in the business after a period of uneven earnings, which may amplify how investors react to any future swings in margins or project performance as the mega project backlog ramps. Yet against this stronger quarter, investors should still be aware of how exposed Tutor Perini is if large fixed price contracts start to run into...
