Oil prices lower, stocks higher as Hormuz doubts drag on

The rise in oil prices has revived inflation fears (Frederic J. BROWN) Oil prices fell back in choppy trading and stock markets were marginally higher Tuesday as investors weighed fading expectations of higher interest rates against concern over oil flows from the Middle East. Oil prices initially rose more than two percent with the United States and Iran appearing to not make much progress towards a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Oil contracts later gave up those gains, but are still up around 10 percent in the past five days and are trading near their highest levels since early June. "

How the page works

How to read the score

Tone is directional

It describes the weighted balance of qualifying headlines. A score of 50 can mean a balanced tape or that direction has been withheld for insufficient evidence; the status label distinguishes them.

Confidence is separate

Confidence measures depth, source breadth, direct relevance, freshness and agreement. It does not rise merely because the tone is extreme.

Price is confirmation

Weekly price response, trend and fair-value position test whether the market is accepting or rejecting the news. They never rewrite the news score.

Classification, not prediction

The page describes completed evidence available at the stated time. It is research context, not a forecast, recommendation, target or execution instruction.
