Apple Stock Falls After Jefferies Slashes Price Target
This article first appeared on GuruFocus. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), the iPhone and Mac giant, fell roughly 0.6% Wednesday morning as a bearish Jefferies call kept hanging over the stock. Jefferies downgrades Apple stock to sell over canceled glass iPhone
Jefferies downgraded Apple stock to underperform from hold on Monday, with analyst Edison Lee citing supply chain checks that suggest the company has canceled its planned all-glass iPhone due to low production yield, according to CNBC. Apple downgraded at Jefferies over iPhone yields and growth concerns
Yahoo Finance Tech Editor Dan Howley breaks down Jefferies' downgrade of Apple (AAPL) to 'underperform' following reports of a canceled all-glass iPhone, while evaluating potential price increases for upcoming models. Video Transcript 00:00 Speaker A Jeffreys downgrading Apple to underperform, Dan. It's a sell. A sell they say. 00:05 Speaker A The analyst saying supply chain checks suggest the company has canceled that all-glass iPhone model due to poor production yield. If that is true, if it is true, Dan, how big a deal is that for Apple? 00:15 Dan I think it would be a huge deal. This is, you know, Edison Lee over at Jeffries as you said, basically saying, you know, that this this kind of 20th anniversary iPhone, which is, you know, what what it would have been, uh, you know, if it is actually canceled, uh, is just kind of an a no-go. 00:30 Dan Uh and so his thinking in this note is that it's a lot harder to kind of develop these new form factors that could allow Apple to raise average selling prices and increase revenue than perhaps was previously imagined. 00:40 Dan They're are reportedly coming out with, though it seems all but certain at this point, uh their foldable phone i

Apple Users Face Major iPhone 18 Shock
This article first appeared on GuruFocus. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) could face a sharper iPhone margin squeeze than investors expected, with TrendForce estimating that the bill of materials for the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro could jump roughly 38% from the comparable model launched in 2025. The surge, driven largely by soaring memory prices, raises a difficult choice for Apple: absorb more of the increase through margins or risk slowing demand with higher handset prices. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 4 Warning Signs with PLTR. Is AAPL fairly valued? Test your thesis with our free DCF calculator. TrendForce expects memory costs to keep rising into 2027, meaning the cost increase could widen further by the time the iPhone 18 series reaches consumers. Apple may have enough financial flexibility to absorb part of the shock. The company reported fiscal third-quarter revenue of $109.4 billion, up 16% year over year, while companywide gross margin reached 50.1%. TrendForce believes Apple could follow the pricing strategy used with recent MacBook launches and sacrifice some hardware margin rather than pass the full cost increase to customers. That approach could help protect iPhone shipment volumes a

Apple (AAPL) Downgraded as Soaring Memory Costs Test iPhone Pricing Power
Tim Cook recently acknowledged that consumers should expect to pay higher prices for Apple products in the near-future as the company can no longer absorb surging costs for memory and storage components. This situation, the CEO noted, has become unsustainable even though the company is doing its best to mitigate it. This pricing pressure has recently prompted one Wall Street firm bearish, raising the question about whether Apple has enough cushion to protect its margins without weakening demand. On August 10, Jefferies downgraded Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) from to Underperform from Hold and cut its price target to $263.66. The downgrade followed supply checks that reveal that the all-glass iPhone for September 2027 has been cancelled due to low-yield. The Wall Street firm sees the potential cancellation as a "major" product setback because the premium device could have helped Apple raise average selling prices at a time when memory prices are surging. Is Apple Losing a Key Pricing Lever Analyst Edison Lee of Jefferies had believed that this all-glass body would eventually migrate to the iPhone Pro and iPhone Pro Max models, helping raise selling price and margin. However, the potenti

Apple may scrap its all-glass iPhone. Wall Street hasn’t been this alarmed since Steve Jobs’ death
Apple is facing cascading challenges. Its growth is slowing, surging memory prices threaten to erode its margins, and more financial institutions are souring on the company. The latest hit came on Monday, as investment firm Jefferies downgraded Apple's stock from "hold" to "underperform"—the equivalent of a "sell" rating—cutting its price target from $285.56 to $263.66. Jefferies analysts slashed the rating after checks on Apple's supply chain indicated that the company had canceled a rumored all-glass iPhone expected to launch for the iPhone's 20th anniversary next year, as well as ongoing struggles countering surging memory prices, and limited signs of progress in its AI efforts. "We believe this shows that introducing new form factors in the iPhone to drive higher [average selling price] is more difficult than expected," Jefferies analysts wrote in regards to the all-glass iPhone, which the firm had expected to sell for a premium. Apple's expected foldable phone, which it may reveal next month, will be the company's only margin driver, though memory costs are expected to increase the selling price of the phone to $2,199 for the 256 gigabyte version and $3,099 for the 2-terabyte

Apple Stock Falls on Downgrade -- Jefferies Warns of Major iPhone Setback
This article first appeared on GuruFocus. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) shares slipped about 2% on Monday after Jefferies lowered its rating on the stock, citing concerns about a reported cancellation of a planned all-glass iPhone and the challenges of lifting premium pricing, according to a Monday analyst note. Jefferies analyst Edison Lee cut Apple to Underperform from Hold and reduced the price target to $263.66 from $285.56. Apple Stock Falls 2.2% as Jefferies Turns Bearish
This article first appeared on GuruFocus. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), the consumer-tech powerhouse behind the iPhone and Mac, fell approximately 2.2% in Monday's regular session after Jefferies delivered a fresh reality check. Analyst Edison Lee downgraded the stock from Hold and chopped his price target to $263.66 from $285.56, just weeks before Apple's expected September product event. The shares also went ex-dividend for Apple's upcoming $0.27 quarterly payout, explaining a small piece of the drop. But that is background noise. The real story is expectations. Apple Investors Get Fresh iPhone Warning
This article first appeared on GuruFocus. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is facing a fresh product-cycle risk after Jefferies downgraded the iPhone maker to Underperform from Hold, arguing that the apparent cancellation of a planned all-glass iPhone could limit Apple's ability to push customers toward higher-priced devices. The firm cut its price target to $263.66 from $285.56, implying meaningful downside from Apple's current price near $313. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 1 Warning Sign with SPCX. Is AAPL fairly valued? Test your thesis with our free DCF calculator. Jefferies analysts led by Edison Lee said supply-chain checks indicate Apple canceled the 20th-anniversary all-glass iPhone, previously expected in September 2027, because of poor production yields. "We view this as a major setback to efforts to bring in higher-priced iPhones amid soaring memory costs," the analysts said. Jefferies estimated the canceled model could have carried a blended retail average selling price of roughly $2,060, while its design features could eventually have migrated to future Pro and Pro Max devices, providing another avenue for Apple to lift pricing and margins. The Memory Shortage Pushes Apple Toward China's CXMT
This article first appeared on GuruFocus. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has been testing memory chips from China's CXMT across product lines including iPhones and MacBooks, according to the Wall Street Journal, as a shortage driven by AI demand pushes up memory prices. Apple has held early talks about using the chips in some devices sold in China and hopes to win the White House's blessing to do so. The stock is down 0.07% premarket. Is AAPL fairly valued? Test your thesis with our free DCF calculator. The obstacles are as much political as technical. Federal rules bar U.S. companies from sharing technical specifications with CXMT, which the Pentagon has flagged for links to China's military, effectively blocking Apple from ordering the custom chips it usually designs. Apple could still buy off-the-shelf CXMT parts and negotiate on price, according to an export-controls lawyer cited by the Journal. Some U.S. policymakers worry that orders from marquee American firms would hand CXMT know-how and funding, and undercut Micron (MU). CXMT has maxed out capacity this year and is prioritizing domestic clients like ByteDance and Tencent, and its technology still trails Micron, SK Hynix (SKHY), and S

Apple's iPhone 18 Costs Could Jump 38%
This article first appeared on GuruFocus. Apple Inc. (AAPL, Financials), the iPhone maker, could face a much more expensive product cycle as soaring memory prices push up the cost of building its next flagship phones. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 6 Warning Sign with TSM. Is AAPL fairly valued? Test your thesis with our free DCF calculator. TrendForce estimates the bill of materials for the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro could be about 38% higher in the third quarter than for the comparable model launched a year earlier. Memory is doing much of the damage. Prices have risen five- to sevenfold since the beginning of 2025, according to the research firm, and could continue climbing into 2027. That leaves Apple with an uncomfortable choice. It can pass more of those costs on to customers through higher iPhone prices, or absorb part of the increase and accept pressure on gross margins. TrendForce believes Apple may lean toward protecting demand, much as it has with recent MacBook pricing. The company could also raise prices on older iPhones to help offset some of the pressure. For investors, the iPhone 18 launch is becoming as much a margin test as a product launch. The key question will be how

This Chinese firm has topped Micron and Kioxia in shipments of crucial NAND memory chips
BEIJING — Yangtze Memory Technologies is rapidly gaining market share in a critical chip sector, according to Counterpoint Research. The company, also known as YMTC, landed in third place by shipments globally in the second quarter, behind South Korea's Samsung and SK hynix but beating out U.S. rival Micron and Japan's Kioxia, Counterpoint data released Wednesday showed. That's when looking at the NAND memory segment, which contributes about one-fourth of Micron's revenue. NAND chips retain data even when devices are powered off but are slower than DRAM memory chips, which operate more quickly

Norway's Wealth Fund Reveals $1.2 Billion SpaceX Stake
This article first appeared on GuruFocus. Elon Musk's space and artificial intelligence company, Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SPCX, Financials), has a new high-profile shareholder.Norway's $2.3 trillion sovereign wealth fund declared a 0.05% investment in SpaceX valued at just over $1.2 billion, the first time the holding has been revealed. The investment comes after record first-half earnings of almost $184.9 billion and an overall return of 9.4% announced by Norges Bank Investment Management.Technology stocks were a big driver. The fund claimed Asian semiconductor holdings were particularly crucial, with major positions including Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Samsung, SK Hynix and TSMC.Its Nvidia share alone was valued at around $61.8 billion as of June 30.The stake in SpaceX is quite minor compared to those holdings but it's interesting given the fund already owns around 1% of Tesla. The revelation adds another big institutional name to SpaceX's shareholder base at a time when the stock has been volatile in the wake of its June market debut, good news for investors. OpenAI vs. Anthropic: Which AI giant is the better IPO bet?
Yahoo Finance Tech Editor Dan Howley, Breaking News Reporter Jake Conley, and Julie Hyman join on Morning Brief to break down the looming IPO race between OpenAI (OPAI.PVT) and Anthropic (ANTH.PVT) IPOs. Video Transcript 00:00 Speaker A Anthropic, uh, you know, they they have obviously done better than Open AI as far as messaging and and appearing as though everything is kind of on the up and up. Um not 00:09 Speaker B And also valuation. 00:10 Speaker A Valuation, yes, they have the higher valuation. That's a result of Claude Code. Uh they kind of took the coding kind of thing by storm. Uh Open AI still has caught up with Codex. And that's not to say that things aren't on the up and up with with Open AI either. It's just that they've had all of these public issues, whether that's the Elon Musk lawsuit or now this Apple lawsuit or, you know, some defections. Um, I think the Elon Musk lawsuit really brought out a lot of the dirty laundry. Uh and so that that had people kind of asking questions. But you also have, you know, uh anthropic, they're going out and saying, uh they've kind of become a pariah almost uh in Silicon Valley because of the way that they talk about AI where in Silicon Valley it's AI, it's awesome. But 01:10 Speaker C Yes. 01:11 Speaker A you know, Anthropic is saying, it's awesome, but we should also proceed with some sense of caution. And so, you know, we've seen these, these, let's also that the hacks recently have also not given a lot of people uh a lot of confidence in in what could happen uh with AI. There's the benefit of it uh where it could eventually make things safer, but in the interim, we're seeing these things just kind of break out and you know, hack into individual companies. So, I I do think uh, you know, on balance it does appear as though Anthropic is the the the safer company at this point, which is so interesting just because Open AI kicked all of this off, right. 01:46 Speaker C Yeah. Well, and the other question is will investors see all of this, see it that way. 01:51 Speaker B Right. 01:51 Speaker A Right. 01:52 Speaker C once the companies eventually come public. 01:53 Speaker B But here's last thing here for me. Every single or almost every single money manager we talk to, almost every single trigger puller says about these IPOs, not buying them. 02:02 Speaker C Well, not buying them at least initially, right? 02:05 Speaker B Right. 02:05 Speaker C Maybe down the road. 02:06 Speaker A I mean, I wonder if 02:07 Speaker B But it does say something. 02:08 Speaker C Yes, I wonder if some of those folks would buy any IPO for that matter, right? Like if it's just a policy that they're not buying IPOs. But it's true that they're waiting certainly to find out how these things are going to look. 02:15 Speaker B Exactly. 02:15 Speaker A That's fair. 02:16 Speaker B That's fair. View Comments

Google launches Pixel 11 smartphone line, including Pixel 11 Pro Fold, as Apple preps foldable iPhone
Google (GOOG, GOOGL) debuted its latest line of Pixel smartphones on Wednesday, including the Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and the foldable Pixel 11 Pro Fold. The devices come as Apple (AAPL) prepares to unveil its iPhone 18 lineup and rumored first foldable iPhone next month. They're also landing as smartphone makers are contending with the ongoing AI-driven memory and storage shortage driving up component costs. Each of the Pixel phones gets a $100 price increase, though the Pixel 11 and Pixel 11 Pro also get more starting storage. Samsung (005930.KS) has also increased the cost of its Android-based smartphones, and Apple is widely expected to do the same next month. Google's smartphones aren't volume sellers. The company doesn't break out revenue from unit sales, and instead nests it under its Google Subscriptions, Platforms, and Devices segment. According to Counterpoint Research, Google captured just 3% of the US market share in Q1 2026. Samsung grabbed 26%, while Apple had 58% of the market. But the phones do serve as an idealized version of what a Google smartphone could be. The Pixel lineup also provides a gateway for hardcore Google fans to take advantage of the company's Gemini AI platform and other services. The Pixel 11 Pro XL·Google From a design standpoint, the Pixel 11 family carries over the same styling as the Pixel 10 lineup. All four phones get three rear cameras and Google's latest Tensor G6 processor. The Pixel 11 sports 12GB of memory, while the 11 Pro and 11 Pro XL get your choice of 12GB or 16GB of memory and between 256GB and 1TB of storage. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold gets 16GB of memory and between 256GB and 1TB of storage. Google says the Pixel 11's Gemini Intelligence services can perform certain agentic tasks, such as booking you a ride and ordering groceries on its own. The phones are also context-aware, with Google saying they will surface the information you need when you need it. According to the company, this includes things like pulling up your calendar availability when someone asks you to grab dinner via text. In addition to the Pixel 11 line, Google unveiled its Pixel Watch 5, which the company says can now help users track their blood pressure and insulin resistance. Google, however, notes that the features aren't meant to diagnose or treat medical conditions, making them more of a kind of advisory tool.Sign up for Yahoo Finance's Week in Tech newsletter.·Yahoo Finance Email Daniel Howley at dhowley@yahoofinance.com. Global Hedge Funds Rotate from AI Infrastructure to AI Monetization in July, Finds Data Insights
Investors trimmed leveraged semiconductor exposure while increasing long fund participation in Amazon and Tesla; short fund participation strengthened in Apple, Meta and Nvidia NEW YORK & LONDON, August 12, 2026--(BUSINESS WIRE)--While July reflected a shift in market strength for stocks across the S&P 500 and technology-heavy indices, the overarching theme was investors moving away from AI infrastructure spending toward AI monetization. This signified investor scrutiny as to whether the massive spending on AI is starting to pay off. In leveraged semiconductor bets, a similar unwind took shape with investors trimming borrowed risk rather than exiting AI exposure entirely. For global hedge funds, this translated into less about reducing risk and more about refining it, according to Data Insights, the institutional hedge fund market intelligence platform, a division of Hazeltree. The Data Insights Crowding Report July 2026 (formerly known as the Hazeltree Crowding Report) shared that, within the Magnificent Seven, Tesla and Amazon experienced modest increases in the number of funds holding long positions month-over-month, while Apple, Meta and Nvidia experienced meaningful declines. Apple, Meta and Nvidia saw increases in short holders, while Microsoft and Tesla saw decreases. Semiconductors held steady interest from hedge funds following the half-year mark. Data Insights track activity through the PHLX Semiconductor Sector Index™, which includes 30 of the largest U.S.-traded semiconductor companies. The share of constituents holding net long positioning held at 70%, unchanged from June. Two securities that demonstrated contrasting shifts included: Intel, which flipped from short-biased to long-biased in July as net long exposure crossed above 50%, while its long-to-short fund count ratio also improved toward parity. Marvell moved in the opposite direction, slipping from long-biased to short-biased. On the long side, crowding remained most pronounced in Applied Materials, followed by Lam Research and Nvidia. On the short side, ON Semiconductor remained the most crowded name, followed by Microchip Technology and Intel. The Data Insights Crowding Report provides a look back at hedge fund long and short crowding across the Americas, EMEA, and APAC during July of 2026, based on Data Insights' analysis of anonymized data from approximately 16,000 securities on its proprietary securities‑finance platform, representing more than 700 global funds. It includes the ten most crowded regional long and short positions, broken out by large-, mid-, and small-cap categories. Story Continues Data Insights defines the crowding score as a relative metric that normalizes the number of funds in Hazeltree's community that are long or short a given security within a predefined group (by region and market cap) relative to its peers. When a fund longs a stock, it generally means it either expects the stock's price to rise or is using longs to hedge its exposure to shorts. On the contrary, when a fund shorts a stock, it generally means it either expects the stock's price to drop or is hedging its long exposure. "Last month, we observed global hedge funds navigating the market rotation with measured adjustments rather than broad de-risking," commented Tim Smith, managing director, Data Insights, Hazeltree. "We believe that as investors considered AI securities, they may have given more weight to fundamental considerations such as earnings, revenue growth and commercialization." Smith added, "One of the biggest IPOs and security stories this year continues to be SpaceX, and we noted its long-to-short fund count ratio declined meaningfully from 2.8 in June to 0.55 in July, along with a falling stock price of 31% from July 1 to July 31." US Core Inflation Comes in Subdued, Easing Pressure on Fed
(Bloomberg) -- Underlying US inflation was subdued in July, likely easing pressure on the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates. Most Read from Bloomberg Phoebe Gates Knew Phia Shopping App Took Credit for Sales It Didn't Drive Trump Weighs Call for Capital Gains Tax Cuts as Midterm Boost Tata Sons Chairman to Step Down, Deepening Leadership Turmoil Five Takeaways From Zuckerberg's 6,500-Word Manifesto on AI Pakistan Says Deal Is Close Even as Iran, US Harden Stances The consumer price index, excluding often-volatile food and energy categories, increased 0.2% from a month earlier, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data out Wednesday. On an annual basis, it advanced 2.5%, matching the slowest pace since March 2021. Overall, consumer prices rose 0.1% from the prior month and 3.4% from a year earlier. Follow the reaction in real time here on Bloomberg's TOPLive blog The report suggests the impact of the energy-price shock from the Iran war continued to fade in July. The figures may give the Fed more room to weigh inflation pressures against a recent slowdown in hiring as it debates whether to lift borrowing costs at its Sept. 15-16 meeting. Policymakers will see additional reports on employment and inflation before the September meeting, and investors will be listening closely to Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh's expected remarks at the central bank's annual Jackson Hole symposium later this month. US stock futures rose and Treasury yields fell as investors pared bets on a September rate hike. Energy and gasoline prices fell for a second month, while grocery prices fell for the first time since March, thanks in part to a record decline in lettuce prices amid the cyclospora outbreak. US gasoline prices rose above $4 a gallon again in July after a US-Iran ceasefire collapsed and hostilities reignited, but remained lower on average across the entire month than in June. Services prices, excluding energy and rents, rose a modest 0.2% following a decline the month before, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Goods prices, excluding food and energy commodities, rebounded following two months of declines. Shelter prices rose 0.1%, accounting for two-thirds of the overall increase, according to the BLS. Medical care and airfares were among other services categories that saw rising prices. Computer Inflation Computer software and accessories prices rose a record 21.2% from a year earlier, while computers, peripherals and smart home assistants advanced by the most in more than four years. Economists are monitoring the impact of price increases announced in June on popular consumer tech products like Apple Inc.'s Macs and iPads, which have been driven by a global shortage of memory chips amid a race to build data centers. Story Continues Figures on producer prices due Thursday will offer insights on additional categories that feed directly into the Fed's preferred measure of inflation, based on the price index for personal consumption expenditures, which will be released later this month. Core inflation by that measure has generally been running faster than in the CPI this year. In September, the Bureau of Economic Analysis will implement changes to how prices are calculated for certain categories in the PCE index, including legal services, computer software and investment advice. A separate report Wednesday that combines the inflation figures with recent wage data showed that real average hourly earnings declined 0.2% in July from a year earlier, extending a string of weak readings since the Iran war began. --With assistance from Augusta Saraiva, Jeffrey Sparshott and Julia Fanzeres. 1 Consumer Stock for Long-Term Investors and 2 We Avoid
1 Consumer Stock for Long-Term Investors and 2 We Avoid Consumer discretionary businesses are levered to the highs and lows of economic cycles. Over the past six months, it seems like demand may be facing some headwinds as the industry's 4.4% return has lagged the S&P 500 by 6.6 percentage points. The elite companies can churn out earnings growth under any circumstance, however, and our mission at StockStory is to help you find them. Taking that into account, here is one consumer stock boasting a durable advantage and two we're steering clear of. Two Consumer Discretionary Stocks to Sell: Oxford Industries (OXM) Market Cap: $552.3 million The parent company of Tommy Bahama, Oxford Industries (NYSE:OXM) is a lifestyle fashion conglomerate with brands that embody outdoor happiness. Why Should You Sell OXM? 11.6% annual revenue growth over the last five years was slower than its consumer discretionary peers Waning returns on capital from an already weak starting point displays the inefficacy of management's past and current investment decisions High net-debt-to-EBITDA ratio of 6× could force the company to raise capital on unfavorable terms if market conditions deteriorate Oxford Industries is trading at $37.01 per share, or 13.7x forward P/E. Dive into our free research report to see why there are better opportunities than OXM. Travel + Leisure (TNL) Market Cap: $4.7 billion Formerly known as Wyndham Destinations, Travel + Leisure (NYSE:TNL) is a global vacation company that provides travelers with vacation ownership, exchange, and travel services. Why Do We Avoid TNL? Sluggish trends in its tours conducted suggest customers aren't adopting its solutions as quickly as the company hoped Eroding returns on capital from an already low base indicate that management's recent investments are destroying value 7× net-debt-to-EBITDA ratio shows it's overleveraged and increases the probability of shareholder dilution if things turn unexpectedly Travel + Leisure's stock price of $76.70 implies a valuation ratio of 9.3x forward P/E. To fully understand why you should be careful with TNL, check out our full research report (it's free). One Consumer Discretionary Stock to Watch: Apple (AAPL) Market Cap: $4.57 trillion Creator of the iPhone and App Store, Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is a legendary developer of consumer electronics and software. Why Should AAPL Be on Your Watchlist? Apple's revenue base is so large because nearly everyone in the U.S. has an iPhone, but this is a double-edged sword. Growth must now come from upgrades, a harder pitch that has resulted in sluggish top-line performance recently. Still, Apple's devices have endured for decades, speaking to its brand, design ethos, and technological chops. Its success is rare in the world of consumer electronics, which is fraught because of commoditization, competition, and obsolescence risk. The company may not have the best gross margin because of its hardware orientation, but it still manages to produce elite operating and free cash flow margins. This shows it doesn't need over-the-top marketing campaigns to convince people to buy its products. Story Continues At $313.21 per share, Apple trades at 34.2x forward price-to-earnings. How the page works
How to read the score
It describes the weighted balance of qualifying headlines. A score of 50 can mean balanced news or that there is not enough evidence; the status label explains which.
Confidence measures depth, source breadth, direct relevance, freshness and agreement. It does not rise merely because the tone is extreme.
Weekly price response, trend and fair-value position test whether the market is accepting or rejecting the news. They never rewrite the news score.
It measures news already published. It is not a forecast, recommendation or price target.
