Bernstein raises WFE growth estimates, boosts price targets

Investing.com -- In a note on Tuesday, Bernstein lifted its forecasts for wafer fabrication equipment (WFE) spending, raising price targets across its semiconductor equipment coverage on growing conviction that the current upcycle "has legs." Analyst David Dai lifted the firm's 2026 WFE estimate to $148 billion, up 26.3% year over year, its 2027 figure to $204 billion, up 32.6%, and its 2028 estimate to $259 billion, up 27%. The two-year growth of 75%, Dai said, "strengthens our WFE upcycle call," with the uplift spread across all applications but skewed slightly more toward non-China memory and China foundry and logic. Bernstein now forecasts global ex-China WFE to grow 36% in 2026 and 37% in 2027, driven largely by DRAM and foundry revisions. It sees China WFE demand reaching $57 billion, $73 billion and $101 billion across 2026 to 2028, with memory leading the surge. The firm raised targets on the three U.S. names, all rated Outperform, taking Lam Research to $385 from $365, KLA to $250 from $225, and Applied Materials to $675 from $525. Bernstein prefers AMAT first, given "most exposure to leading edge logic, DRAM, and packaging," followed by Lam and then KLA. In Japan, Bernstein continues to prefer Kokusai and Tokyo Electron to benefit from stronger memory capex, while ASML "stands out as our top pick" in Europe, with dollar revenue seen growing at a 34% compound annual rate through 2028. The firm maintained Outperform ratings on Chinese names AMEC, NAURA and Piotech. Buy and Hold These 2 Top-Ranked AI-Led Semiconductor Equipment Stocks

The global semiconductor manufacturing equipment and materials industry is growing by leaps and bounds, buoyed by AI-driven capital expenditure in leading-edge logic, high-bandwidth memory ("HBM") and Test and Packaging components. On July 14, SEMI reported in its Mid-Year Total Semiconductor Equipment Forecast – OEM Perspective that the market size of this industry is expected to reach a record high globally at $165.9 billion in 2026, up 23.2% year over year. The momentum is set to continue in the near term, reaching an estimated $229.5 billion globally in 2028. Here, we recommend two stocks from this space for investment and long-term holding to significantly strengthen one's portfolio. These companies are: Lam Research Corp. LRCX and Amkor Technology Inc. AMKR. Each of our picks currently sports a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy). You can see the complete list of today's Zacks #1 Rank stocks here. The chart below shows the price performance of our two picks year to date. Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Lam Research Corp. Lam Research has been benefiting from accelerating semiconductor demand as AI infrastructure spending reshapes wafer fabrication requirements. LRCX entered the second half of 2026 emphasizing technology transitions across memory, logic and packaging. Rising process complexity is increasing demand for etch and deposition tools, while NAND conversions, advanced DRAM and larger packages expand LRCX's served market. Customer Support is scaling through upgrades, high utilization and early adoption of Equipment Intelligence and Dextro services. Strong Earnings Results LRCX delivered strong fourth-quarter fiscal 2026 earnings results with adjusted EPS and revenues easily beating the respective Zacks Consensus Estimate. NAND revenues more than doubled sequentially. DRAM contributed 23% of Systems revenues, with spending focused on wafer additions and upgrades across 1-alpha, 1-beta and 1-gamma nodes. Non-GAAP gross margin reached 52%, up 210 basis points sequentially. Likewise, non-GAAP operating margin expanded 340 basis points sequentially to 38.4%. Cash, cash equivalents and restricted cash increased to $5.60 billion at the end of fourth-quarter 2026 from $4.77 billion in the previous quarter. AI-Driven Growth Management said AI demand is driving new capacity investments and more complex semiconductor architectures. LRCX expects calendar 2026 wafer fab equipment spending to reach the low $150 billion range, up from the prior $140 billion outlook. AI workloads are increasing demand for HBM, chiplets and larger packages. LRCX is a leader in TSV etch and electroplating and has shipped 510-by-515-millimeter panel systems into development programs across multiple geographies. It also plans to ship its first 310-by-310-millimeter panel tool in 2026. Story Continues Lam Research is extending production-proven foundry and logic capabilities into advanced DRAM as customers adopt smaller pitches and more complex wiring. Akara has secured strategic tool-of-record positions for difficult gate etch applications, and its installed base has doubled annually since launch. The Zacks Analyst Blog Highlights SpaceX, Tesla KLA Corp, Onto Innovation, Applied Materials and Lam Research

For Immediate Release Chicago, IL – August 10, 2026 – Zacks.com announces the list of stocks featured in the Analyst Blog. Every day the Zacks Equity Research analysts discuss the latest news and events impacting stocks and the financial markets. Stocks recently featured in the blog include: SpaceX SPCX, Tesla TSLA, KLA Corp KLAC, Onto Innovation ONTO, Applied Materials AMAT and Lam Research LRCX. Here are highlights from Friday's Analyst Blog: Tesla-SpaceX Terafab Bet: 4 Chip Equipment Stocks That Could Benefit Elon Musk is betting big on chips. SpaceX and Tesla have committed an initial $16.8 billion to build Terafab, an AI semiconductor complex spanning more than 100 million square feet in Grimes County, TX. The vertically integrated facility is designed to handle chip manufacturing, packaging, and testing all under one roof. A buildout of this scale could create opportunities for chip equipment makers like KLA Corp, Onto Innovation, Applied Materials and Lam Research. Musk has pegged Tesla and SpaceX's future AI compute needs at over 1 terawatt annually— a figure that dwarfs current global chip output— and Terafab is meant to help close that gap. The chips from the Terafab plant will be engineered for edge computing and inference, purpose-built to power Tesla's Optimus robots and Cybercabs, alongside high-performance processors for SpaceX's space-based data centers. As Tesla and SpaceX lean further into AI-dependent products, including autonomous robots, self-driving vehicles and orbital computing, owning manufacturing capacity in-house could mean fewer bottlenecks, less reliance on external suppliers and faster execution on projects central to Musk's roadmap. To pull it off, Intel has also stepped in as a manufacturing partner, lending its process technology and high-volume production expertise to the facility. Beyond Intel, Terafab's buildout will require enormous amounts of specialized equipment— the tools that actually construct, inspect, and calibrate a fab of this size. No vendors have been named publicly yet, but a handful of companies dominate that space, and they stand to benefit as Terafab's plans unfold. 4 Top-Ranked Chip Equipment Stocks KLA helps chipmakers detect defects and measure chip quality during the manufacturing process. It's like the quality-control specialist of a semiconductor factory. Since Terafab plans to manufacture logic chips, memory chips, and package them all in one facility, maintaining high production quality will be critical. As chips become more advanced, manufacturers need even more inspection and testing, which should support demand for KLA's tools. The stock sports a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy). The Zacks Consensus Estimate for KLA's fiscal 2027 and 2028 EPS implies year-over-year growth of 44% and 21%, respectively. Story Continues You can see the complete list of today's Zacks #1 Rank stocks here. Onto provides inspection and measurement tools, with a strong focus on advanced chip packaging, including tools that help align and connect chip components as they are assembled. Terafab plans to handle packaging in-house, and since Musk's roadmap spans different chip types, that likely means a mix of packaging methods too. As AI chips grow more complex, demand for advanced packaging keeps rising, and Onto has been benefiting from that trend. The stock sports a Zacks Rank #1. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for Onto's 2026 and 2027 EPS implies year-over-year growth of 45% and 40%, respectively. Applied Materials sells a broad range of chipmaking equipment along with the installation and support services that go with them. That breadth matters for Terafab, which plans to produce advanced logic and memory chips in a single facility. AI-driven demand is pushing more equipment spending toward this kind of advanced chipmaking, where Applied Materials already has an established presence. The stock carries a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy). The Zacks Consensus Estimate for AMAT's fiscal 2026 and 2027 EPS implie

How the page works

How to read the score

The score shows direction

It describes the weighted balance of qualifying headlines. A score of 50 can mean balanced news or that there is not enough evidence; the status label explains which.

Confidence is separate

Confidence measures depth, source breadth, direct relevance, freshness and agreement. It does not rise merely because the tone is extreme.

Price is confirmation

Weekly price response, trend and fair-value position test whether the market is accepting or rejecting the news. They never rewrite the news score.

What the page does

It measures news already published. It is not a forecast, recommendation or price target.
