Key Points
Meta is testing major resistance around $685 after a roughly 16% post-Q2 rally.
Declining volume and slowing bullish momentum could make a breakout harder to sustain.
A high-volume move above $685 could signal renewed strength, while another rejection may lead to a pullback.
Meta Platforms is approaching a level that could determine whether its recent rally has further room to run. Now It is trading at $678.ย The stock has gained roughly 16% since its second-quarter report, but the rally is now running into a major technical hurdle around $685. Meta has tested this resistance several times without breaking through, while the stock has spent much of the past eight months in a sideways trend.
That makes the current setup particularly important for traders. Meta has not yet created a convincing higher-high structure, and buying volume has been declining as the stock moves toward resistance. That combination suggests that buyers may be losing some momentum at an important price level.
A breakout above $685 would therefore need more than a brief move above resistance. Strong volume and sustained bullish momentum would provide better confirmation that buyers have taken control. Without that confirmation, a failed breakout could leave the stock vulnerable to another pullback.
Meta's fundamental story remains closely tied to artificial intelligence. The company continues to invest heavily in AI infrastructure, models and products, while investors are watching whether those investments can translate into stronger long-term revenue and profits. Meta is also preparing for its Meta Connect event on Sept. 23, which could provide investors with additional updates on its AI strategy.
Wall Street analysts remain focused on Meta's AI opportunity. JPMorgan recently upgraded the stock to Overweight and raised its price target to $820, citing progress in AI models and agents. Citi has also maintained an $800 price target ahead of Meta Connect.
The challenge for Meta is now clear: turn its strong recent rally into a confirmed breakout. If bullish momentum accelerates and volume expands above the $685-$690 zone, traders could view that as a sign of renewed strength. But if momentum starts fading and the stock fails again at resistance, a pullback could follow.
For now, $685 remains the level to watch. Meta's next major move may depend on whether buyers can finally break through it with enough volume to make the breakout convincing.
