Micron Stock Falls as It Faces a Fresh Chinese Memory-Chip Threat

This Chinese firm has topped Micron and Kioxia in shipments of crucial NAND memory chips
BEIJING — Yangtze Memory Technologies is rapidly gaining market share in a critical chip sector, according to Counterpoint Research. The company, also known as YMTC, landed in third place by shipments globally in the second quarter, behind South Korea's Samsung and SK hynix but beating out U.S. rival Micron and Japan's Kioxia, Counterpoint data released Wednesday showed. That's when looking at the NAND memory segment, which contributes about one-fourth of Micron's revenue. NAND chips retain data even when devices are powered off but are slower than DRAM memory chips, which operate more quickly

Why Micron Stock Is Surging Today
Micron (NASDAQ: MU) stock is bounding higher in Wednesday's trading, with its share price up 6.5% as of 12:45 p.m. ET. For comparison, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite were up 0.3% and 0.6%. Micron is seeing bullish momentum in today's trading, thanks in part to news about lobbying against the use of Chinese memory chips in the U.S. market. The company's share price is also getting a boost from strong quarterly results and guidance from two high-profile players in the neocloud artificial intelligence space. SK Hynix and SanDisk Climb 8%, Western Digital Gains 4% as Memory Shortage Deepens
Quick Read SK Hynix (SKHY) and SanDisk (SNDK) each surged 8% Wednesday after Temasek announced direct investments and Micron's CBO warned 2027 supply will be even tighter. Micron (MU) jumped 6% and the Roundhill Memory ETF (DRAM) rose 8%, yet both trade below 21x earnings despite revenue surging over 345% year over year. Micron Chief Business Officer Sumit Sadana's "even tighter" 2027 outlook suggests today's move could mark a genuine sector re-rating rather than a one-day reaction to fresh catalysts. The Old Fear-Based Paradigm Around Memory Cyclicality is Dead, So I’m Buying Micron
Quick Read Micron's HBM ships under multi-year, non-cancellable hyperscaler contracts, structurally ending the commodity memory boom-bust cycle that spooked investors for decades. MU guides for $50 billion in Q4 revenue and trades at a forward P/E of 6, backed by $18 billion in quarterly free cash flow. CEO Sanjay Mehrotra expects tight supply beyond 2027, while $100 billion in take-or-pay RPO with above-peak floor pricing hedges against any AI slowdown. Micron Stock Slips Despite Mizuho's Massive $1,375 Target
This article first appeared on GuruFocus. Micron Technology (NASDAQ:MU) is riding one of the hottest memory cycles in years, but the stock slipped roughly 1.1% Tuesday even after Mizuho delivered another bullish call. According to Barron's, analyst Vijay Rakesh kept his Outperform rating and a huge $1,375 price target after meeting Micron executives. His thesis comes down to one powerful word: scarcity. DRAM and NAND supply could remain tight through 2027, with meaningful new capacity potentially not hitting the market until 2028. That gives Micron something every commodity-like semiconductor

Microsoft, Amazon, Micron and Alphabet are part of Zacks Earnings Preview
For Immediate Release Chicago, IL – August 10, 2026 – Zacks.com releases the list of companies likely to issue earnings surprises. This week's list includes Microsoft MSFT, Amazon AMZN, Micron MU and Alphabet GOOGL. Q2 Earnings: Robust Results & Positive Revisions Validate Fundamentals The Q2 earnings season continues to validate our constructive view on corporate fundamentals. Rather than simply clearing reduced consensus hurdles, reporting companies are offering encouraging reads on order trends, margin resilience, and full-year demand. This fundamental health is filtering directly into analyst models, driving a steady stream of upward revisions for Q3 and future quarters. Crucially, these favorable revision patterns are not a new development; they extend a tailwind that has been building for nearly a year. Historically, these upward adjustments were tightly concentrated in Technology and, more recently, Energy, following Middle East supply disruptions. However, for Q3 2026, the constructive estimate revisions have broadened significantly, rising across 8 of the 16 Zacks sectors—including Transportation, Finance, Aerospace, Industrials, Utilities, and Construction, alongside Tech and Energy. As would be expected, estimates for full-year 2026 are also going up. The Magnificent 7 Earnings Performance Microsoft and Amazon became the latest "Magnificent Seven" members to deliver results that earned market applause, following Alphabet's blowout report earlier in the cycle. All three tech giants remain deeply committed to building out generative AI infrastructure—an ongoing multi-billion-dollar CapEx push that has occasionally sparked broader market anxiety over ROI timing. Cloud segment performance has emerged as the definitive barometer for whether these aggressive AI outlays are yielding tangible commercial returns. On that front, all three hyperscalers delivered robust top-line momentum, led by Alphabet's standout, industry-leading acceleration. With Q2 results from 6 of the Mag 7 members out already (Nvidia reports results on August 26th), earnings for the group are on track to be up +85.5% from the same period last year on +27.5% higher revenues. This growth pace reflects actual results for the 6 Mag 7 members that have reported with estimates for the still-to-come Nvidia report. Keep in mind that the group's blockbuster Q2 tally has benefited from Alphabet's non-operating unrealized gain on its SpaceX stake, which accounted for an estimated $77.4 billion in the company's $112.1 billion net income. The Q2 earnings growth pace for the Mag 7 group becomes a relatively more 'reasonable' +30.3% once Alphabet's non-operating unrealized gain is stripped out. Story Continues Importantly, the Mag 7 group has consistently enjoyed a steadily improving earnings outlook, with analysts raising their estimates, as the chart below shows. It is useful to keep in mind that the Mag 7 group is on track to bring in more than 28.9% of all S&P 500 earnings this year, up from 16.4% of the total in 2020. The group accounts for 33.7% of the index's market capitalization. Q2 Earnings Season Scorecard Through Friday, August 7th, we have seen quarterly results from 444 S&P 500 members, or 88.8% of the index's total membership. Total earnings for these companies are up +42.2% from the same period last year on +14.8% revenue gains, with 82.7% of the companies beating EPS estimates and 76.4% beating revenue estimates. The unusually strong earnings growth rate of +42.2% and revenue growth of +14.8% are benefiting from Micron and Alphabet's blockbuster results. The Q2 reporting cycle starts winding down this week, with 7 of the 16 Zacks sectors having reported all of their results, including Energy, Autos, Construction, Basic Materials, Utilities, and others. This week's line-up includes more than 600 companies, including 11 S&P 500 members. Notable companies reporting this week include Berkshire Hathaway, Applied Materials, Cisco Systems, Tapestry, and oth

Memory chip crunch could last 2 more years, JPMorgan says
Yahoo Finance Senior Business Reporter Ines Ferre joins Opening Bid to discuss JPMorgan's (JPM) latest note, warning that the memory chip shortage could continue for at least two more years. Ferre also breaks down the S&P 500's (^GSPC) bullish run, which has produced 26 record closes in 2026. Video Transcript 00:00 Speaker A And as I know you've been digging into this JP Morgan uh note on the memory chips uh and two things stood out to me. one, they think the correction is over and then number two, this crisis looks like it will continue to roll on for two years. And let's be clear, this is a crisis. Companies cannot get the chips they need and as a result, I mean it's driving prices up really and benefiting the likes of Micron, Sandisk, you name it. 00:27 Inez Yeah, that's right. And those are some of their stocks that they called out and saying that high bandwidth memory shortage is is going to continue. In fact, it's going to double digit percentage uh be in a shortage in through 2026. So you are looking at that shortage there. They're also saying that the additional capacity still won't be enough to meet that memory demand. And also that these companies are having this pricing power with these long-term agreements that they've been doing. So certainly they're bullish on SK Hynix, on Micron, on Samsung Electronics. And what they also said that was that China even though it is a near-term risk, they're still saying that there's a technology gap when it comes to this high bandwidth memory, this advanced memory, that's a two to three-year technology gap. So certainly a bullish call here from JP Morgan. 01:43 Speaker A Inez, it doesn't uh, I think Friday was 26 record closes for the S&P 500 this year and it doesn't it doesn't seem like there's been a a bang up year for the S&P 500. 02:11 Inez No, it hasn't. and you've seen the leadership earlier this year, you saw the leadership with the semiconductor stocks, but then you saw the leadership coming in with the hyper scalers and that was something that Nomura had called out. uh Charlie Mclliot over there, that it basically was saying that in order to get back to the all-time high, you need the leadership to come back uh from the hyper scalers, from the mega caps. and you saw that leadership and if you take a look at even a five-day chart, I mean I wrote a piece on this last Friday. You saw Nvidia that was higher. uh you saw Microsoft that was higher, you saw also Meta that was higher for the week as well. So that leadership coming back from the hyper scalers helped with the S&P 500 coming back to all-time high. View Comments

Micron’s Memory Boom Is Heading For A Peak, Analyst Warns
Micron Technology, Inc.(NASDAQ:MU) stock gained about 1% in Monday premarket trading as technology stocks moved higher ahead of the opening bell. Nasdaq futures rose 0.41%, while S&P 500 futures gained 0.17%. The move comes as investors weigh Micron's longer-term growth prospects against expectations for slowing memory pricing momentum and rising competition from Chinese manufacturers. On Aug. 7, Citigroup analyst Atif Malik maintained a Buy rating on Micron but lowered his price forecast to $1,150 from $1,400. The firm expects memory pricing momentum to slow over the next year, even as DRAM and NAND prices continue to rise from current levels. Citi Trims Micron Forecast Citi reduced its valuation multiple and lowered its fiscal 2027 and 2028 earnings estimates. The firm expects DRAM and NAND prices to continue climbing but sees the pace of gains slowing over the next four quarters. Citi expects memory prices to peak in the second quarter of next year. The more cautious outlook reflects concerns that the current memory upcycle could lose momentum as supply expands and pricing growth moderates. China Competition Remains Key Risk Citi identified rising Chinese memory capacity as the biggest long-term risk to its Micron thesis. The firm said additional NAND and DRAM supply from China could pressure Micron's pricing power outside the U.S., even if American restrictions limit the Chinese companies' access to the U.S. market. Despite those risks, another market strategist sees substantial upside remaining in Micron as the memory cycle progresses. Parker Sees Micron Doubling By Cycle End Trivariate Research CEO Adam Parkertold CNBC on Friday that Micron, NVIDIA Corp.(NASDAQ:NVDA) and other compute-related stocks could trade meaningfully higher over the next 12 months. However, he expects the group to advance in a steadier grind rather than through another sharp rally. Parker said Micron could double by the end of the cycle because investors may already be pricing in too much earnings deterioration after the eventual peak. He also argued that investors are focusing too heavily on Micron's income statement and not enough on its improving balance sheet. Parker pointed to the company's revenue outlook, high gross margins and potential to generate substantial free cash flow over the next several years. Still, Parker said investors should manage their exposure to AI semiconductor stocks through broader diversification because volatility remains elevated. Earnings And Analyst Outlook Story Continues Micron's next major scheduled catalyst is its earnings report, estimated for Sept. 22, 2026. Analysts expect earnings of $31.29 per share, up sharply from $3.03 a year earlier. Revenue is estimated at $50.82 billion, compared with $11.31 billion in the year-ago period. Micron trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of about 19.8. Top ETF Exposure Micron also carries significant weight in several technology and semiconductor exchange-traded funds. Invesco PHLX Semiconductor ETF(NASDAQ:SOXQ): 8.91% State Street SPDR NYSE Technology ETF(NYSE:XNTK): 8.75% Invesco AI and Next Gen Software ETF(NYSE:IGPT): 8.71% Micron's sizable weighting means significant inflows or outflows from these ETFs can contribute to buying or selling pressure in the stock. Price Action MU Stock Price Activity: Micron Technology shares were up 0.73% at $883.96 during premarket trading on Monday, according to Benzinga Pro data. Micron (MU) Secures Strategic Auto Deals and AI Momentum to Offset Cyclical Pressures
Micron Technology (NASDAQ:MU) has experienced strong AI-driven demand through 2026, helping offset its historical exposure to cyclical market downturns. Earlier, on July 16, Micron completed Strategic Customer Agreements with a group of automotive Tier 1 suppliers, a smaller but telling sign that its customer relationships are stretching longer and becoming more predictable across more than one industry.Micron (MU) Secures Strategic Auto Deals and AI Momentum to Offset Cyclical Pressures Bull Case: Locking In Demand From Data Centers To Dashboards The automotive agreements, completed with Qualcomm, Visteon, HARMAN, JOYNEXT, DENSO, Astemo and Hyundai Mobis, give Micron greater visibility into future memory and storage orders as vehicles add more advanced driver assistance and in-cabin computing power. Automotive platforms carry long production lifecycles and strict qualification standards, so locking in supply and pricing years ahead reduces the kind of order volatility that has hurt Micron during past downturns. The bigger driver remains AI. Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) has lifted its 2026 outlay target to $220 billion, and Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) plans a $200 billion budget of its own, money that keeps flowing toward the memory chips inside AI servers. That demand already shows up in the numbers. In the nine months ended May 28, the first three quarters of fiscal 2026, Micron's revenue reached $79 billion, a 203% jump from the same stretch a year earlier, while net income hit $47 billion, a 60% net margin, versus just $5 billion the year before. Analysts expect revenue to grow 247% this fiscal year and another 85% in fiscal 2027, and Micron has pushed customers toward five-year price agreements instead of the one-year contracts that once left it exposed to sudden price swings. Bear Case: The Downcycle Playbook Investors Haven't Forgotten Micron's stock climbed nearly 690% over the twelve months before peaking in June, then fell about 30% since, a pullback that reflects investors growing less willing to pay up for growth rather than any clear deterioration in the business. Some of that hesitation is historical memory. Memory chip supply has caught up with, and usually exceeded, demand in every prior upcycle, and when it has, prices and profits have reversed just as sharply as they rose. Competition adds to the risk. Beyond longtime rivals Samsung and SK Hynix, the Chinese firm ChangXin Memory Technologies could start turning out high-bandwidth memory before this year is out, a development that may chip away at the pricing power Micron currently enjoys. Early investors locking in gains after such a steep run have added to the selling as well. Story Continues What The Positioning Data Shows Hedge fund ownership of Micron rose from 137 funds in the prior quarter to 154 in the most recent one, pointing to accumulating rather than fading conviction. Short interest sits at just 3.21% of float, a level that suggests little organized skepticism is betting against the stock. Yet Micron trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of just 5.66 as of August 7, a multiple so low it implies the market still doubts today's profit levels will hold. Where The Story Goes From Here Micron's automotive agreements and its AI-driven results argue that this upcycle has more structural support than the ones that came before it, while the company's history of overshooting on supply argues for some caution no matter how strong today's numbers look. Whether five-year pricing deals and continued AI infrastructure spending can outrun new supply from rivals like Samsung, SK Hynix and ChangXin Memory Technologies will likely decide which read holds up first. While we acknowledge the potential of MU as an investment, we believe certain AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk. Q2 Earnings: Robust Results and Positive Estimate Revisions Validate Market Fundamentals
The Q2 earnings season continues to validate our constructive view on corporate fundamentals. Rather than simply clearing reduced consensus hurdles, reporting companies are offering encouraging reads on order trends, margin resilience, and full-year demand. This fundamental health is filtering directly into analyst models, driving a steady stream of upward revisions for Q3 and future quarters, as the following chart highlights.Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Crucially, these favorable revision patterns are not a new development; they extend a tailwind that has been building for nearly a year. As would be expected, estimates for full-year 2026 are also going up, as the chart below shows.Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research The Magnificent 7 Earnings Performance Microsoft MSFT and Amazon AMZN became the latest "Magnificent Seven" members to deliver results that earned market applause, following Alphabet's GOOGL blowout report earlier in the cycle. This growth pace reflects actual results for the 6 Mag 7 members that have reported with estimates for the still-to-come Nvidia report.Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Keep in mind that the group's blockbuster Q2 tally has benefited from Alphabet's non-operating unrealized gain on its SpaceX stake, which accounted for an estimated $77.4 billion in the company's $112.1 billion net income. The Q2 earnings growth pace for the Mag 7 group becomes a relatively more 'reasonable' +30.3% once Alphabet's non-operating unrealized gain is stripped out. Story Continues The chart below shows the Mag 7 group's earnings and revenue growth on a calendar year basis.Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Importantly, the Mag 7 group has consistently enjoyed a steadily improving earnings outlook, with analysts raising their estimates, as the chart below shows.Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research It is useful to keep in mind that the Mag 7 group is on track to bring in more than 28.9% of all S&P 500 earnings this year, up from 16.4% of the total in 2020. The comparison charts below put the Q2 earnings and revenue growth rates for these index members in a historical context.Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research The comparison charts below put the Q2 EPS and revenue beats percentages in a historical context.Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investme

Citi Revamps Micron Target Target With A Twist
This article first appeared on GuruFocus. Micron Technology (NASDAQ:MU) remains one of Wall Street's strongest AI-memory plays, but Citi is warning investors that the extraordinary pricing cycle may be approaching its peak. Analyst Atif Malik cut his Micron price target 18% to $1,150 from $1,400, while maintaining a Buy rating, arguing that DRAM and NAND prices should keep rising before momentum fades in 2027. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 3 Warning Signs with MU. Is MU fairly valued? Test your thesis with our free DCF calculator. Micron is one of the world's largest memory-chip manufacturers, producing DRAM, NAND and high-bandwidth memory used in smartphones, computers and data centers. Its HBM products have become increasingly important because they sit alongside AI accelerators and benefit directly from surging infrastructure spending. We see both DRAM and NAND prices decelerating Q/Q in the next four quarters, with prices peaking in 2Q of next year, Malik wrote. Citi reduced its fiscal 2027 and 2028 earnings estimates by 1% and 2%, respectively, and lowered the valuation multiple used for Micron. Malik expects gross margins to retreat from the mid-80% range toward the mid-70% range next year as pricing power moderates. That would still represent exceptionally strong profitability. Micron posted fiscal third-quarter revenue of $41.46 billion, up from $9.30 billion a year earlier, while companywide gross margin reached roughly 84.6%. Management expects fourth-quarter revenue near $50 billion and gross margin around 86%, reflecting continued severe supply tightness. Citi also sees some protection from long-term contracts, with roughly 40% of Micron's DRAM bits covered by pricing agreements. The larger threat is new capacity, particularly from China. China competition and capacity additions in both NAND and DRAM markets is the biggest risk to our thesis, Malik wrote. Investor Takeaway On Micron Stock Investors should focus on DRAM and NAND pricing, gross margins, HBM shipments and industry capacity additions rather than the price-target cut alone. Micron's $22 billion of multiyear customer supply commitments and continued AI-driven shortages provide unusually strong earnings visibility. The risk is that markets anticipate memory downturns well before earnings peak. If quarterly pricing increases continue slowing while Samsung, SK Hynix and Chinese suppliers add capacity, Micron's valuation could compress despite still-record profits. Conversely, supply remaining constrained through 2027 would make Citi's new target look conservative. View Comments

SK Hynix invests $38B in new plants amid AI memory shortages
Yahoo Finance Tech Editor Dan Howley discusses SK Hynix (SKHY) committing $38 billion to build new chip manufacturing facilities in an effort to scale up production of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and DRAM amid persistent AI supply shortages. Video Transcript 00:00 Speaker A SK Hyx is announcing a $38 billion investment in two new chip plants as demand for high bandwidth memory continues to outpace supply. 00:06 Speaker A For more, we are bringing in Yahoo Finance tech editor Dan Howley. Dan, all right, so we know SK Hyx's margins are out of sight here, but $38 billion is a lot of money and uh, you know, if you're going to keep the world supplied with HBM, I guess you got to do a little bit of that. Um, what are the some of the details there? 00:27 Dan Howley Yeah, they're basically setting up two new factories or fabs or fabrication facilities. and they're just buildings to build uh these chips. Anyway, they're they're producing, they want to produce more of this high bandwidth memory as well as uh D uh this kind of uh uh DDR RAM. So there's high bandwidth memory, there's DDR RAM. They both are made using something called uh DRAM. And don't worry about all the abbreviations, just know that DRAM is the basic component and it goes into the stuff that goes in data 00:50 Dan Howley centers and it goes into the stuff that goes into your smartphone and your laptop. Now, because of this huge build out of AI, the HBM memory, that high bandwidth memory is getting more play from these manufacturers while the supply of DRAM is uh or DDR RAM is dropping. And so that means that pricing on some of our components that we buy is going up. So, to meet demand, they're trying to construct these facilities. uh SK Hyx, Micron, Samsung, all building out more fabrication facilities to build more chips. 01:14 Dan Howley Problem is, it takes a long time to build these facilities. It's not like standing up a Wendy's, you know, it's not going to happen over right, you're not going to get froties out of these either. What will happen is they will take years and then it's not even clear that that will actually meet all the demand that is available right now. There's there's not enough supply. Uh these buildings might not be uh the answer to that supply problem. They might have to continue to build out moving forward. 01:31 Dan Howley And so, this is basically a way to kind of try to tamp down on some of that. But, you know, as I said, there's no guarantee that this will stop all the supply constraints. In fact, we're hearing that that could last well into 2030. View Comments

Micron Stock Falls After Citi Slashes Price Target on Memory Risks
This article first appeared on GuruFocus. Micron (NASDAQ:MU) and SanDisk (NASDAQ:SNDK) remained under pressure on Friday as investors continued pulling back from memory-chip stocks following a weaker outlook from SanDisk and a cautious industry forecast from Citi. Micron shares fell about 1%, while SanDisk declined more than 2%. The broader memory sector also weakened after Citi said DRAM and NAND pricing could begin slowing over the next several quarters, with prices likely peaking in the second quarter of next year. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 3 Warning Signs with MU. Is MU fairly valued? Test your thesis with our free DCF calculator. Citi analyst Atif Malik maintained a Buy rating on Micron but lowered his price target to $1,150 from $1,400. Following discussions with memory suppliers and industry participants, the firm said pricing trends remain healthy for now but are expected to moderate as supply conditions normalize. The brokerage also pointed to expanding Chinese memory production as a longer-term risk for the industry. While U.S. export controls may limit Chinese memory shipments to the domestic market, increased exports to Europe and other regions could weigh on global pricing. Selling pressure extended across Asian chipmakers. SK Hynix (SKHY) fell more than 4%, while Samsung (SSNLF) and Kioxia also traded lower. Despite the near-term caution, analysts continue to expect artificial intelligence-driven demand for memory and enterprise storage to support the sector over the longer term. View Comments

Micron Stock Slips as Citi Cuts Target by $250
This article first appeared on GuruFocus. Micron Technology (NASDAQ:MU), a memory and storage semiconductor leader riding the AI infrastructure boom, delivered another blockbuster quarter, yet its shares slipped about 0.6% in Friday's regular session after Citi cut its price target to $1,150 from $1,400 while keeping a Buy rating. The downgrade wasn't a vote against Micron's business. Instead, Citi expects the explosive run in DRAM and NAND pricing to cool over the next four quarters, reminding investors that even the hottest AI winners eventually face tougher comparisons. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 3 Warning Signs with MU. Is MU fairly valued? Test your thesis with our free DCF calculator. Micron's numbers still look like they're running in overdrive. Revenue rocketed to a record $41.46 billion, up from $23.86 billion in the previous quarter and $9.30 billion a year ago. GAAP net income climbed to $28.24 billion, while operating cash flow reached $25.39 billion. Management expects fiscal fourth-quarter revenue of $50 billion, plus or minus $1 billion, with an extraordinary gross margin of around 86%. Importantly, that forecast already assumes memory-price gains will moderate. The valuation picture is becoming harder to ignore, though.Micron Stock Slips as Citi Cuts Target by $250·us.finance.gurufocus The GF Value chart estimates Micron's intrinsic value at about $564, well below its recent share price near $874, leaving the stock trading roughly 55% above fair value. That premium tells you the market has already priced in plenty of AI optimism, raising the bar for future earnings surprises. That's why the market's focus is shifting. Citi's new target still sits about 31% above Micron's recent trading price, showing Wall Street remains bullish over the long haul. But the easy gains from soaring memory prices may be fading. From here, investors will be watching whether Micron can keep growing through higher volumes, tighter execution and disciplined spending instead of relying on another pricing boom. With a planned $27 billion capital investment for fiscal 2026 and expanding relationships with major AI customers, the growth story is still very much alive. The next chapter, however, will be won by executionnot just higher memory prices. View Comments

SK Hynix Drops $38 Billion on AI Chips. Here's Why Investors Are Watching
This article first appeared on GuruFocus. SK Hynix (NASDAQ:SKHY) is about to invest 54 trillion won ($38.1 billion) to build two new memory chip fabrication plants in South Korea as it expands production capacity to meet rising artificial intelligence-driven demand. SK Hynix said 35.2 trillion won will fund the Y2 fabrication plant in Yongin, while 19.1 trillion won will be invested in the M17 facility in Cheongju. The Yongin site will manufacture high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and next-generation DRAM chips, while the Cheongju plant will focus on NAND flash memory. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with production targeted for 2028 and 2029. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 1 Warning Sign with SKHY. Is SKHY fairly valued? Test your thesis with our free DCF calculator. The investment comes as SK Hynix, Samsung Electronics and Micron Technology (MU) race to expand memory output amid robust AI infrastructure spending. High-bandwidth memory is a specialized chip used alongside AI processors to accelerate data processing in servers and data centers. Industry researcher Counterpoint Research said broader capacity additions from SK Hynix, Samsung, Micron and China's CXMT are expected through 2028. However, demand for AI memory is projected to outpace new supply, suggesting pricing could remain supported over the next several years. View Comments

How the page works
How to read the score
It describes the weighted balance of qualifying headlines. A score of 50 can mean balanced news or that there is not enough evidence; the status label explains which.
Confidence measures depth, source breadth, direct relevance, freshness and agreement. It does not rise merely because the tone is extreme.
Weekly price response, trend and fair-value position test whether the market is accepting or rejecting the news. They never rewrite the news score.
It measures news already published. It is not a forecast, recommendation or price target.
