Stock market today: Dow, S&P 500, Nasdaq futures waver as US, Iran harden stances

US stock futures trod water as the standoff between the US and Iran became more entrenched, raising doubts about progress on a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average (YM=F), the S&P 500 (ES=F), and the Nasdaq-100 (NQ=F) were roughly flat in premarket trading after stocks closed lower on Monday. Ongoing geopolitical tensions and increasing demands around war compensation put downward pressure on equities. On Sunday, President Trump rebuked Iran's demand for reparations and said he would wait for economic pressure to build on the country. "We are only se

Wall Street just endorsed Jensen Huang's 'big concept' for AI. What now?

The first three-plus years of the artificial intelligence buildout has been paid for through record amounts of equity and debt issued by the world's leading tech companies, some of whom are spending so much of their existing capital that they've turned cash-flow negative. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang just revealed what he expects to be the next phase of financing, backed not by corporate balance sheets, but by Wall Street's top power brokers. In an interview with CNBC on Monday, Huang called his plan a "big concept," unveiling it on camera alongside leaders from Goldman Sachs, BlackRock, Blackstone

Intel's huge rally is helping pay for its AI comeback: Chart of the Day

Intel's (INTC) AI ambitions are getting more expensive. Its 165% rally this year is helping foot the bill. The chipmaker said Monday it plans to raise $15 billion by selling new shares to investors, giving it fresh cash for factories, equipment, day-to-day operations, and other needs. That comes with a cost for existing shareholders. Selling new stock causes dilution, meaning each share represents a slightly smaller piece of the company. Intel's rally has dramatically reduced that cost. At Monday's close of roughly $98, Intel would need to sell about 153 million shares to raise $15 billion. At

Hiltzik: The Trump administration's investments in corporate stocks raise fears of 'crony capitalism'

It was about one year ago that the Trump administration announced a truly eye-opening transaction: In return for an $8.9-billion investment in the chipmaker already authorized under the Biden-era CHIPS Act, the government would take a roughly 10% stake in Intel shares — making the government Intel's largest shareholder. Was this a good deal? For the U.S. taxpayer, the answer is yes — from the standpoint of paper profits. The 443.3 million Intel shares the government acquired for $8.9 billion are currently worth nearly $44 billion on the open market. The Trump administration's 'strategic stakes

US-Iran standoff sends oil up, dents stocks

By Amanda Cooper LONDON, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Oil prices rose on Tuesday as negotiations between the United States and Iran over a peace deal and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz hit an impasse, while uncertainty over the global inflation outlook tempered global stocks. U.S. President Donald ‌Trump responded with his own demands on Monday to Tehran's conditions for a peace deal, calling for Iran to pay compensation for those ‌killed in wars, attacks and protests, potentially complicating efforts to reopen the crucial waterway. BANGKOK (AP) — Shares were mixed in Asia, while oil prices were holding steady Tuesday after jumping the day before as uncertainty persisted over when the Strait of Hormuz could reopen and get the global flow of crude going again. U.S. futures edged higher. Brent crude oil was unchanged at $87.72 a barrel, while U.S. benchmark crude also was flat at $82.13 a barrel. Brent surged 5% on Monday. It swung between $72 and $102 last month as hopes rose and fell that the United States and Iran could reach an agreement that would allow oil tankers to freely exit the Middle East again to deliver crude

Why Intel’s $20 Billion Stock Offering Is Actually a Great Sign for the Company

Shares of Intel have been under pressure this week since the chip maker announced a $20 billion stock offering. UBS analyst Timothy Arcuri wrote Wednesday that Intel’s $20 billion stock offering will “remove an overhang” for the stock as it will allow the chip maker to fund its foundry buildout. The stock offering will provide “bridge” funding through 2027 and 2028 for Intel, Arcuri wrote. Continue Reading

Intel's huge rally is helping pay for its AI comeback

In today's Chart of the Day, Yahoo Finance Markets & Data Editor Jared Blikre dives into Intel's (INTC) rally and how the chipmaker's surging stock price saved the company millions as it prepares to issue $20 billion in new common stock. Video Transcript 00:00 Brooke Break this down for us, what exactly is the reason behind all of this? 00:03 Jared All right. So I've got a two-day stock chart here. You can see over these last two days, Intel stock is down over 4%. Not a big drop, but why is that? Well, as you said, Intel was offering 15 billion yesterday, they actually upsized it overnight because they had enough demand to do that. So all in all, they sold 20 billion dollars worth of new shares. That means for existing shareholders, they own a smaller piece of the pie and that's why the share price is coming down. It's almost mechanical and almost any time that you see that, uh a company that's issuing more shares, you will see the stock price drop. So that's pretty common. But I want to highlight, and this is what I'm writing about in my chart of the day, uh this is just a one-year chart of Intel. and it was only last September that we were looking at strategic investments from the US government, then Nvidia, then Softbank. All of that was happening in here at about $20 to $23 per share, a little bit underneath, uh the current share price back then. So pretty cheap share price when you compare it today. Uh right now it's 96 94. at the peak here, it was $140. Now, when Intel is looking to buy to uh raise $20 billion, guess what? At a higher share price, they don't have to issue as many shares. And I've actually done the math here. Let me just show you how that works out. So, Intel's rally made new stock cheaper to issue. That's my thesis there. So at the stock price used, $95, that's what they were using overnight for the $20 billion. Uh that's 211 million shares or thereabout. Now, if they had tried to raise $20 billion last September, uh in that 20 to 23 range or actually $20.47, which is what Uncle Sam got, that would take 977 million shares, almost a billion. So they basically saved 80% fewer shares by that 165% rally that Intel has enjoyed year to date. So that's how the math works out. And yeah, they could have uh they could have issued even fewer shares if they had been able to sell at the very top. But this is a really good example of Intel using its share price as a means to uh take in more money. And this is something that we actually saw in the uh 2021 GameStop episode. It was AMC that was able to use their surging stock price to issue more stock. And I would say the difference between AMC then and Intel now is that Intel is building chip factories. Uh they have uh a very strong balance sheet and all of this money or most of it is probably going to go into the AI buildout. So, by no means are they probably done raising money, but this is a great example of using a share price rally to uh fund its operations. Back to you, Brooke. 02:21 Brooke Jared, such momentum when it comes to that stock. We've been watching it all year long, since last year, too, and definitely, we'll keep a close eye on it. Thanks so much for bringing that all down. 02:34 Brooke And we also just showed you Yahoo Finance's Alpha Space platform. How the page works

How to read the score

The score shows direction

It describes the weighted balance of qualifying headlines. A score of 50 can mean balanced news or that there is not enough evidence; the status label explains which.

Confidence is separate

Confidence measures depth, source breadth, direct relevance, freshness and agreement. It does not rise merely because the tone is extreme.

Price is confirmation

Weekly price response, trend and fair-value position test whether the market is accepting or rejecting the news. They never rewrite the news score.

What the page does

It measures news already published. It is not a forecast, recommendation or price target.
