What was reported. What changed since.

Positions are a delayed snapshot. The later price path adds context; it does not reveal todayโ€™s short position or prove that covering caused a move.

The shaded interval begins at the latest short-interest settlement. It separates later price evidence from the position snapshot; it is not an event-return study.

Reported position and trading activity

Is the position unusualโ€”or the volume?

Inspect actual levels as well as historical ranks. A high rank within a short history is not evidence of a large percentage of float being short.

Volume denominator

The trading activity behind the ratio.

Provider-reported average daily volume for each settlement. A lower denominator can raise days to cover even when short shares fall.

What moved the covering ratio?

Reconstructed as shares divided by reported average daily volume. It can differ from a rounded or minimum-one provider ratio.

The change, step by step.

Prior ratio1.62 days
After position change1.52 days
After volume change2.28 days

Position changes first at the prior volume; then volume changes at the latest position. This exact decomposition depends on that order.

How sensitive is the arithmetic?

Illustrate a reduction in reported shorts using a chosen share of trading activity. Real execution depends on supply, price, borrowing terms and other participants.

Calculated trading-day equivalents, not an expected covering time or squeeze forecast.

Conditional playbook

What would strengthenโ€”or challengeโ€”the case?

Use the evidence as a sequence of checks. None of these scenarios establishes a price target or an automatic trade.

Continuation

The recovery broadens

Lower reported shorts accompanied rising price. Look for price strength to survive after that reduction, with wider participation; the report alone cannot attribute the rise to covering.

Alternative

The report loses relevance

Price may have moved materially since settlement. Treat a new trend, event or volume shock as fresh evidence; the next report can reveal a different position.

What challenges the case

Price and the thesis separate

A reversal through the recent price range, a new corporate action or the opposite position change in the next report calls for a fresh assessment. High short interest alone is not confirmation.

The measures behind the label.

Historical position rank55/100
Shares short within comparable stored history; not percent of float.
Historical days-to-cover rank45/100
Reported ratio within its comparable history; not a covering deadline.
Squeeze setup fit0/100
Requires increased shorts, rising price and elevated historical positioning.
Bearish setup fit0/100
Requires increased shorts alongside falling price.
Positioning divergence0/100
Both position and price rise, or both fall. A relationship to investigate.

What this evidence does not contain

No verified short-float percentage, live borrow fee, loan availability or lender concentration is supplied by these reports. Reported short positions can include hedges. A rise in price does not prove forced covering.

Definitions, coverage and limits

Understand what the evidence can tell you.

Transparent inputs and dated comparisons make the research useful. The scores are rules, not calibrated probabilities.

Reported positions and publication lag

FINRA reports outstanding short positions at designated settlements. The settlement is not the publication date. A successful provider check does not make an older position current. Daily short-sale volume measures transactions and cannot be substituted for outstanding short interest.

FINRA data definitions โ†—
Historical ranks and setup scores

Share-count and valid days-to-cover ranks use up to 40 stored observations and need at least three comparable reports. Tied observations share their rank; a flat history ranks 50. Known splits reset the comparable history. Three reports provide only limited context.

Historical positioning combines share rank (55%) and covering-ratio rank (45%). Directional fit adds capped position change, price change and trend context. A squeeze setup requires increased shorts, rising price and historical positioning of at least 60. Bearish confirmation requires increased shorts and falling price. Covering requires lower shorts and rising price. Scores can overlap; the leading classification follows the published rule order.

Missing evidence contributes no strength. High setup fit is not a return estimate. Historical position size is not short interest as a percentage of float.

Price windows and corporate actions

Report-interval price uses the latest weekly closes on or before each settlement, at most ten days earlier. Intervals longer than 35 days and known split boundaries are excluded from directional comparisons. Later prices are shown separately.

The feed may revise earlier reports. Corporate-action records can also be incomplete, and raw share counts can change for reasons other than newly opened or closed shorts. This app does not reconstruct what every participant knew at a historical publication time.

Days to cover and capacity scenarios

Days to cover relates shares short to average daily volume. Zero volume and invalid sentinel ratios are excluded from analytic comparisons. The source ledger preserves provider values. Reconstructed ratios can differ from provider rounding or a minimum-one value.

The capacity tool is arithmetic under chosen assumptions. Borrow availability, fees, order-book depth and actual execution are not observed here. Reductions in reported shorts do not establish how much buying caused a price change.
