The Sign Before Alphabet Stock’s Surge Was Google Cloud’s Margin, Not Its Growth

Alphabet (GOOGL) stock surged 71% over the past year, primarily driven by the significant improvement in Google Cloud's operating margin, rather than just its revenue growth. The article highlights that Google Cloud's operating margin nearly doubled to 20.7% before the stock's run began, while its growth rate remained consistent, indicating efficient scaling. This margin expansion, coupled with a growing backlog for Google Cloud and Alphabet's capacity build, signaled a re-rating opportunity for the stock that was evident in financial reports well in advance.

Alphabet Stock Slips as Australia Expands News-Payment Rules

This article first appeared on GuruFocus. Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG), the parent of Google, YouTube and Google Cloud, slipped roughly 0.1% Wednesday morning as Australia turned up the regulatory heat on Big Tech. The government wants major digital platforms to strike content deals with at least eight eligible Australian media organizations, according to Reuters, up from six under an earlier proposal. Google has been down this road before. It already pays publishers under Australia's existing framework. Now Canberra wants more deals and it is putting real money behind the threat. Warning! Warren Buffett and Greg Abel's Alphabet Stake Now Tops $24.2 Billion: 3 Reasons Berkshire Will Keep Buying

At the end of last year, Warren Buffett stepped down as CEO of Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRKA)(NYSE: BRKB) after leading the charge for 60 years. Current CEO Greg Abel had been at Berkshire for many years before taking over as CEO, but investors have likely wondered how his investment style would differ from Buffett's. Their strategies differ, but one thing that remains consistent is Berkshire's recent interest in Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL). Berkshire began investing in Alphabet last year when Buffett was still CEO and has continued to increase its stake ever since. Missed Nvidia

Alphabet (GOOGL) Doubles Down On AI Bonds And DeepMind Shake-Up – What Trade-Offs Are Emerging?

In early August 2026, Alphabet announced a large multi‑tranche bond issuance totaling more than US$20 billion in senior unsecured notes, while also reshaping Google DeepMind's leadership as Demis Hassabis moved from CEO to chairman and chief scientist of Alphabet. This combination of aggressive AI infrastructure financing and a reconfigured AI leadership team highlights how Alphabet is reshaping its capital structure and governance to support long-term artificial intelligence ambitions amid rising legal and regulatory pressures. We'll now examine how Alphabet's sharply higher AI-related capita

What Does Oracle (ORCL) Gain From Bringing New AI Models Into Its Apps?

Make better investment decisions with Simply Wall St's easy, visual tools that give you a competitive edge. Oracle (NYSE: ORCL) and Google Cloud are expanding their partnership to bring Google's Gemini AI models into Oracle's enterprise applications. The collaboration will make Gemini's multimodal AI tools available across Oracle's cloud and business software stack. Enterprise customers are expected to gain more options for building AI powered workflows and analytics on Oracle's platforms. Oracle is far from the only stock tied to the build out of AI capabilities across software and infrastructure, so it can be useful to look at a wider group of companies that stand to benefit from this theme through 55 AI infrastructure stocksNYSE:ORCL Earnings & Revenue Growth as at Aug 2026 Oracle sits among the larger enterprise software providers, with a long history in databases and business applications that many global companies rely on. The stock trades at $147.02 and has had a mixed record for investors, with gains of 34.7% over three years and 74.0% over five years, but a decline of 24.9% year to date and 40.5% over the past year. 4 things going right for Oracle that this headline doesn't cover. How does this Gemini partnership actually change Oracle's AI story? For Oracle, bringing Google's Gemini models directly into Fusion Applications, NetSuite and AI Agent Studio gives customers a new set of choices for building AI agents on top of Oracle data and workflows. Instead of only using models already accessible through Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Enterprise AI, customers can now mix and match Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite for cost sensitive tasks and Gemini 3.5 Flash for heavier reasoning, video or presentation work. That tightens the link between Oracle's application stack and its AI infrastructure narrative, where a large AI related backlog and heavy data center buildout are already central themes. Does this change the existing Oracle Narrative around AI and cloud? The Narrative has focused on Oracle's own cloud infrastructure, AI enabled database and multi cloud data centers. The Gemini agreement tilts part of that story toward being an "AI aggregator" in enterprise software. Oracle is not just selling its own stack. It is curating third party models for price performance inside Fusion and NetSuite workflows. That may matter for investors who see execution risk in Oracle's large AI capex, because the business case increasingly rests on how well Oracle turns that infrastructure and multi model access into higher usage of its core applications. Story Continues What should investors watch next for this Oracle and Google Cloud news to really matter? The key proof points sit in product uptake and customer language over the next 12 to 18 months. Watch for Oracle to start quantifying how many Fusion and NetSuite customers are using Gemini powered features, how many AI agents are built in AI Agent Studio, and whether management starts highlighting specific Gemini use cases on earnings calls. Any shift in reported AI workload metrics on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure that is linked to Gemini agents would also show whether this partnership is feeding into the broader AI backlog that underpins the current Narrative. Don't Be Fooled: Warren Buffett's and Greg Abel's $366 Billion Warning to Wall Street Echoes Louder Than Ever

Key Points Berkshire's new boss, Greg Abel, ended a 14-quarter streak of net stock sales. Google parent Alphabet accounts for a substantial portion of this year's equity purchases, and doesn't suggest that the value-focused Abel views stocks, as a whole, as attractive. The historical priciness of equities has meaningfully increased Berkshire Hathaway's cash pile since the fourth quarter of 2022.10 stocks we like better than Berkshire Hathaway › With the exception of monthly inflation reports, Federal Reserve meetings, and perhaps Nvidia's operating results, there's arguably no event more anticipated on Wall Street than Berkshire Hathaway's (NYSE: BRKA)(NYSE: BRKB) quarterly earnings release. For several years leading up to his retirement as CEO, the Oracle of Omaha, Warren Buffett, was a net seller of equities. This was a trend that continued for a 14th consecutive quarter after his protégé, Greg Abel, took the reins as Berkshire's new CEO beginning Jan. 1. Missed Nvidia in 2009? Image source: The Motley Fool. But investors witnessed what appears to be a decisive shift in the buying habits of Berkshire's new boss. During the June-ended quarter, $23.47 billion in equity securities were purchased, and just $3.69 billion were sold, working out to $19.78 billion in net buying. It's the first time Buffett or Abel has been a net buyer of stocks since the third quarter of 2022. Though this might seem like a green light for investors to pounce, caution is warranted. Even after nearly $19.8 billion in net-purchasing activity in the second quarter, Warren Buffett's and Greg Abel's $366 billion warning to Wall Street echoes louder than ever. Buffett and Abel are sticklers for value -- and it's challenging to find good deals in today's market Although we'll have to wait until after the closing bell on Aug. 14 for Berkshire Hathaway to file its Form 13F -- this form outlines which stocks Abel bought and sold in the June-ended quarter -- it's worth noting that a substantial portion of this year's equity purchases relates to Google parent Alphabet(NASDAQ: GOOGL)(NASDAQ: GOOG). BERKSHIRE HATHAWAY WAS A NET BUYER OF STOCKS DURING Q2 FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 14 QUARTERS Berkshire Hathaway $BRK.B spent a total of $23.5 Billion buying stocks during Q2 ... they brought in a total of $3.7 Billion by selling stocks during Q2 That means Berkshire spent a net... pic.twitter.com/hUxfgyPKbn -- Evan (@StockMKTNewz) August 8, 2026 During the first quarter, Abel more than tripled Berkshire's stake in Alphabet's Class A shares (GOOGL) and opened a position in its Class C shares (GOOG). Meanwhile, Berkshire purchased $10 billion in Alphabet stock ($5 billion of each share class) via private placement during the second quarter. This doesn't appear to be an endorsement of the stock market as a whole, so much as Abel's favoring Alphabet's long-term growth prospects. Since the fourth quarter of 2022, Berkshire Hathaway's cash pile, including U.S. Treasury bills, has soared. Though it dipped in the latest quarter, it still stands at a staggering $365.5 billion (as of June 30). Put plainly, neither Buffett nor Abel would keep this much cash on hand if they felt stocks, as a whole, were a good deal. This $366 billion warning speaks to the historical priciness of equities and the unwavering value-focused approach of Buffett and Abel. But it's also showing a clearly solid ROI on that CapEx you're mentioning without having to constantly increase these eye-popping numbers. Microsoft actually trimmed, we haven't heard that word, trimmed its full-year capex projection a little bit in this quarter. Now it's an accounting change mostly related to how long they assume the useful life of their AI data centers are. Bu

Broadcom (AVGO) Pairs AI Chip Boom With A Software Security Push

Broadcom (NASDAQ:AVGO) has drawn significant market attention in 2026 for its custom AI chips. But the company's August 6 announcement of new VMware vDefend and Avi Load Balancer capabilities is a reminder that its infrastructure software business, the one built to throw off steady, high-margin cash, is still evolving too. With the stock sitting roughly 20% below the all-time high it set at the end of May, investors are left weighing a fast-growing chip story against a market that has already pulled back once this year.Broadcom (AVGO) Pairs AI Chip Boom With A Software Security Push Bull Case: A Business Firing On Two Engines The custom chip pipeline remains the headline growth driver. Chief Executive Hock Tan has told investors Broadcom's AI semiconductor business will top $100 billion in revenue in 2027, a jump from the $10.8 billion it generated in the second quarter alone, up 143% year over year. Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) is currently the primary buyer of those chips. Still, Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) and other major clients are expected to place larger orders once 2027 arrives, and Broadcom has already guided for its AI chip business to grow more than 200% in the current quarter. Total company revenue rose 48% year over year to $22.2 billion in the second quarter, adjusted earnings per share climbed 54% to $2.44, and free cash flow reached $10.3 billion, up 60%. The August 6 vDefend and Avi Load Balancer update shows the software side isn't standing still either. The new releases, vDefend SSP 5.2, vDefend 9.1.1, Avi Load Balancer 32.1.4, and the vACT 3.0 migration tool, add native API protection, on-premises malware sandboxing, and full air-gapped support, while substantially boosting performance. Distributed Firewall throughput can now reach up to 75Gbps per 100G NIC server, a 241% increase, scaling to 75Tbps across a VMware Cloud Foundation instance, and Avi Load Balancer throughput per controller can climb to 12.25Tbps. A new two-node deployment model also cuts the hardware needed to run vDefend by as much as 33%. Broadcom is pitching this as a response to AI-fueled cyberattacks, giving enterprises a reason to expand their VMware footprint even as chip demand grabs the spotlight. Bear Case: Concentration And A Cautious Market The flip side of Broadcom's chip success is how few customers it depends on. Alphabet and Meta account for the bulk of custom silicon demand today, and while both have signed long-term agreements, Meta's running through 2029 and Alphabet's through 2031, any disruption to those relationships would ripple through the stock quickly. That risk helps explain why shares fell sharply after Broadcom's last earnings report despite results and guidance that pointed to accelerating AI chip sales. Valuation debates hinge heavily on which year of earnings investors use and how much multiple compression they expect once growth normalizes, with estimates for where the stock could trade in coming years varying by billions of dollars depending on small changes in assumptions. Story Continues Where The Market Stands Now Hedge fund ownership slipped from 202 funds to 173 in the most recent quarter, a pullback that suggests some institutional trimming even as the AI chip narrative builds. Short interest sits at just 1.47% of float, indicating little organized betting against the stock. Broadcom trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 22.88, a multiple that assumes solid but not extreme near-term growth. What Comes Next Broadcom's story now rests on two questions playing out at once. Can the AI chip business scale toward the triple-digit revenue figures management has promised as more customers place orders, and can the software side keep adding capabilities that justify enterprise upgrade cycles independent of the chip narrative? For the bulls, the answer depends on Meta and Alphabet's spending holding steady through the back half of the decade. For the skeptics, the falling hedge fund count and the sharp

SA Asks: Should Google's AI leadership changes concern investors?

[Artificial Intelligence AI Assistant Apps - ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude] How concerned should Alphabet (GOOG [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/GOOG]) (GOOGL [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/GOOGL]) investors be about Google's recent AI leadership changes? Seeking Alpha analysts Geneva Investor [https://seekingalpha.com/author/geneva-investor] and Cash Flow Venue [https://seekingalpha.com/author/cash-flow-venue] weigh in. Geneva Investor [https://seekingalpha.com/author/geneva-investor]: Personally, I would separate this news into two parts. The reorganization itself mostly formalizes how the lab already ran, with Demis Hassabis moving to become DeepMind's chair and Alphabet's chief scientist (GOOG [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/GOOG]) (GOOGL [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/GOOGL]) and Koray Kavukcuoglu taking over day-to-day operations and Gemini model development. The departures are the part that probably scared the market: Jeff Dean leaving with Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals, and Quoc Le, just weeks after Noam Shazeer went to OpenAI (OPENAI [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/OPENAI]) and John Jumper to Anthropic (ANTHRO [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/ANTHRO]), and with Gemini 3.5 Pro still unreleased. Even so, I think a ~4% reaction overstates the impact of these key people leaving. My case on Google has always rested on it owning the most integrated AI stack in the industry: its own TPUs, data centers, frontier models, and cloud, along with a multi-billion Cloud backlog to monetize its AI stack. Those are institutional assets, and Dean and Ghemawat spent 27 years building infrastructure that will outlive them. What I will watch to assess the impact of these changes is releases, not the organizational chart. I think that as long as Gemini 4 arrives on schedule under Kavukcuoglu, the story is closed. But a slip may make it a real thesis risk, and the beneficiaries would be Microsoft (MSFT [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/MSFT]) through OpenAI and, to a lesser degree, Meta Platforms (META [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/META]). Cash Flow Venue [https://seekingalpha.com/author/cash-flow-venue]: I think investors should pay attention, but not overreact. Yes, Jeff Dean's departure is surely a loss. I mean, he's always been one of the top AI and engineering talents at GOOG. But Demis Hassabis is staying at Alphabet in an even more strategic role focused on long-term AI. I don't think these changes materially alter the long-term investment thesis. For now, I'd view this as a transition rather than a red flag. As long as GOOG's large (and just increasing) CapEx drives their AI and cloud supply (which was lately showcased by high double-digit Google Cloud growth), I will consider this transition solid. I believe that Koray Kavukcuoglu, who is a former CTO and a long-time DeepMind member, will take this over very, very well. * Trending AI Stocks [https://seekingalpha.com/screeners/9ec83fbab1-Trending-AI-Stocks] MORE ON ALPHABET * Why Alphabet Is A Fantastic Value [https://seekingalpha.com/article/4931601-why-alphabet-is-a-fantastic-value] * Alphabet: Vindicated By Association [https://seekingalpha.com/article/4929870-alphabet-vindicated-by-association] * Alphabet: The $514 Billion Backlog Doesn't Lie [https://seekingalpha.com/article/4929794-alphabet-the-514-billion-backlog-doesnt-lie] * Cloud capex forecast calls for 29% jump in 2027 as compute demand exceeds capacity: MS [https://seekingalpha.com/news/4629570-cloud-capex-forecast-calls-for-29-jump-in-2027-as-compute-demand-exceeds-capacity-ms] * Alphabet sells more debt to fund AI ambitions [https://seekingalpha.com/news/4627966-alphabet-sells-more-debt-to-fund-ai-ambitions]

Tenable (TENB) Widens Its AI Security Net Just As Profits Turn A Corner

On August 4, Tenable Holdings (NASDAQ:TENB) announced that it now covers every major AI platform and developer tool through its Tenable One platform, adding Google Gemini to a list that already included Anthropic Claude, OpenAI's ChatGPT Enterprise, and Microsoft Copilot. It is a bet that as companies rush to adopt AI, someone needs to watch where the risk is hiding, and Tenable wants to be the company holding that flashlight.Tenable (TENB) Widens Its AI Security Net Just As Profits Turn A Corner Bull Case: Closing The Gap Nobody Was Watching The scale of the problem Tenable is chasing is hard to ignore. The company said it detected 457 million AI-related security issues across more than 7,000 organizations, averaging 62,000 exposures per organization over 30 days. That is the kind of number that makes the case for exposure management on its own. Tenable One AI Exposure now extends discovery to every major LLM, all major Model Context Protocol deployments, and AI-native development tools like Cursor, Windsurf, and Trae, roughly doubling its coverage of sanctioned and shadow AI in one release. Beyond just finding the exposures, the platform lets security teams act on them directly, creating tickets in Jira or ServiceNow (NYSE:NOW), or firing off alerts through email, Slack, or Teams. That combination of visibility and Tenable's Hexa AI engine, which automates remediation tasks, is what the company is positioning as a full loop rather than another dashboard nobody checks. The business results back up the demand story. Tenable One made up half of the company's new sales in the second quarter, evidence that customers are consolidating onto the full platform instead of buying individual point tools. Second-quarter revenue came in at $268.5 million, ahead of management's guided range of $263 million to $266 million, while operating expenses fell to $195.8 million from $200.3 million a year earlier. That combination flipped a $14.7 million net loss into a $3.8 million net profit, and adjusted profit jumped 40% to $57.9 million. The stock is up more than 40% in 2026 on the back of that improvement, yet Tenable's market capitalization of $3.6 billion is still a fraction of CrowdStrike Holdings (NASDAQ:CRWD) and Palo Alto Networks (NASDAQ:PANW), whose combined market cap tops $450 billion. Bear Case: The Growth Question Behind The Discount That gap shows up in valuation too. Tenable trades at a price-to-sales ratio of 3.7, well below its own historical average of 7.1 since going public in 2018, and far cheaper than Palo Alto Networks at 22.9 times sales or CrowdStrike at 38.1 times. But cheap multiples usually come with a reason attached. Tenable's revenue grew 8.6% year over year in the quarter, modest next to CrowdStrike's annual recurring revenue growth of 24% to $5.5 billion. Some of Tenable's profit turnaround came from cutting costs, including in growth-oriented areas like marketing, rather than from accelerating sales. That is a reasonable way to prove discipline, but it raises the question of whether faster growth is coming or whether the company is simply managing a slower-growth business more efficiently. Story Continues What The Trading Data Says Hedge fund ownership rose from 40 funds to 41 in the most recent quarter, a modest but real uptick in institutional interest. Short interest sits at 11.3% of float, enough to show a bear case exists alongside the bull one. The forward price-to-earnings ratio of 18.28 is far from expensive for a growing software company, which lines up with the discounted price-to-sales ratio and suggests the market has not yet given Tenable full credit for its improving profitability. Where This Leaves Investors Tenable is chasing a real and growing problem in AI exposure, and its second-quarter numbers show the platform strategy is starting to translate into actual profit. The valuation gap versus CrowdStrike and Palo Alto Networks is wide enough to leave room for the stock to re-rate if growth hold

Stanley Druckenmiller's Portfolio Skips Megacap Tech Almost Entirely. Here's What He's Buying Instead.

Key Points Billionaire investor Stanley Druckenmiller has a long track record of success. His Duquesne Family office only holds one "Magnificent Seven" stock, and it cut way back on that one in Q1. Sandisk, Seagate, Broadcom, and Micron are among the tech names he added in Q1. 10 stocks we like better than Natera › Stanley Druckenmiller is considered one of the greatest investors ever, with a track record that few can match. He founded Duquesne Capital in 1981, and over the next 30 years, until he closed up shop in 2010, his portfolio averaged a 30% annual return with no down years. Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue » Since 2010, he has run the Duquesne Family Office, basically managing his own fortune. He has beaten the S&P 500 over the past 10 years, with a total return of roughly 393% compared to 251% for the benchmark. Stanley Druckenmiller, Duquesne Family Office. Image source: Getty Images. Knowing what Druckenmiller is buying and selling could provide some valuable insight into how he sees the market. In the most recent 13F filing, Druckenmiller's portfolio had some glaring omissions -- "Magnificent Seven" stocks. Dumping Google and Amazon In the $3 billion portfolio, with some 65 holdings, Druckenmiller holds just one Magnificent Seven stock, Amazon. But he reduced his Amazon position significantly, selling roughly 692,000 shares in Q1. Amazon is now a minor position, representing about 0.32% of the portfolio. The only other Magnificent Seven stock that Druckenmiller held was Alphabet. However, he completely exited out of the Google parent in Q1, selling all 385,000 shares he owned. But the portfolio is not completely devoid of big tech. Druckenmiller added a new stake in Broadcom, which many consider the magnificent eighth stock. Druckenmiller bought some 196,000 shares of Broadcom, representing a 2% stake in the portfolio. He also added new positions in tech and AI highfliers Micron, Intel, Seagate, Sandisk, and Arm Holdings. But none of these represent more than 1% of the total portfolio. In addition, Druckenmiller added 1.8 million shares of STMicroelectronics, which now makes up 3% of the portfolio. Natera is the largest position The largest position in a megacap tech stock that Druckenmiller owns is in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing. While he sold off about 9% of Taiwan Semiconductor shares in Q1, he still holds about 495,000 shares, representing roughly $167 million, or about 5.7% of the overall portfolio. The largest Druckenmiller position by far is Natera(NASDAQ: NTRA), a cell-free genetic testing company focused on women's health, oncology, rare diseases, and organ health. Druckenmiller boosted his position in Natera by 22% in Q1, adding some 552,000 shares. Natera stock now makes up about 21% of the entire Duquesne portfolio. The next-largest position is Insmed, a biopharmaceutical company that treats patients with serious and rare diseases. Druckenmiller pared back Insmed shares by 22%, but it is still the second-largest holding, accounting for 6.4% of the total. Taiwan Semiconductor is third, followed by YPF Sociedad Anónima, an Argentinian oil and gas company. He added 2.6 million shares of YPF in Q1, a 433% increase. It now makes up 5.1% of the portfolio. Fifth is the iShares MSCI Brazil ETF, which invests in large and mid-cap companies in Brazil. It accounts for 4.5% of the total portfolio. The only other stock that accounts for more than 4% of the portfolio is Mexican grocery store chain BBB Foods. Should you buy stock in Natera right now? Warren Buffett's Successor, Greg Abel, Just Ended Berkshire Hathaway's 14-Quarter Selling Streak. Is This the Screaming Buy Signal Investors Have Been Waiting For?

Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRKA)(NYSE:BRKB) just reported strong second-quarter earnings, with operating income rising over 16% year-over-year. Notably, the company's massive cash hoard declined from over $397 billion in the first quarter to $365.5 billion by the end of the second quarter, as CEO Greg Abel began putting cash to work. Continue » Even more interesting is that Berkshire was a net buyer of stocks in the second quarter. According to quarterly reports filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the large conglomerate purchased nearly $23.5 billion in stocks in the second quarter and sold only about $3.7 billion. In the 14 quarters prior, Berkshire had been a net seller of stocks. Is this the screaming buy signal that investors have been waiting for? Image source: The Motley Fool. What did Berkshire buy in the second quarter? We won't know exactly which stocks Berkshire bought and sold in the second quarter until the company files its 13F form, which will likely occur after the market closes on Aug. 14. However, we do know that on June 1, Berkshire announced it had purchased $10 billion of Alphabet Class A and Class C shares in a private placement. Alphabet is now a top five position in Berkshire's roughly $355 billion equities portfolio and represents one of the clearest bets on artificial intelligence that Berkshire has made. Berkshire also announced the acquisition of Taylor Morrison Homes in the second quarter for $6.8 billion. However, being an acquisition, it wouldn't be included in the "purchase of equity securities" line on Berkshire's cash flow statement. The deal also didn't close until after the quarter ended, so more financial details won't be made public until third-quarter earnings materials are reported. Berkshire also repurchased about $4.5 billion of its own stock in the quarter. That's significant, considering Berkshire repurchased no stock in 2025 and only about $2.9 billion in 2024. Is this a screaming buy signal? While net stock buying and the restart of share repurchases certainly appear constructive, I don't think investors should get too excited just yet. Warren Buffett led Berkshire Hathaway for six decades, generated incredible returns, and is viewed as the greatest investor of all time. Story Continues While Buffett has all the confidence in the world in Abel, he will never be able to fill the shoes of Buffett and, therefore, will not be given the same leeway by the market. So while investors may have found it acceptable for Buffett to hoard nearly $400 billion in cash, Abel is likely expected to put some of it to work through more stock purchases and by repurchasing Berkshire stock. An investment in Alphabet allows Abel to show investors that he is not completely ignoring AI while also buying a company that should be able to navigate a more difficult environment for the AI trade, if one occurs. Removing the $10 billion of stock attributed to Alphabet, Berkshire's net purchases come out to roughly $10 billion, which is not insignificant but not necessarily a screaming buy signal either. I also think it's important to note that the Buffett indicator, which measures the Wilshire 5000 relative to gross domestic product (GDP), remains at an all-time high of 232%. Buffett has called this "probably the best single measure of where valuations stand at any given moment." Buffett has also publicly said that investors have been "gambling" and it's difficult to find value right now. Given that Abel and Buffett still work together closely, I don't think these more constructive moves in the second quarter are a screaming buy signal. Should you buy stock in Berkshire Hathaway right now? Before you buy stock in Berkshire Hathaway, consider thi

Berkshire Hathaway's new CEO Greg Abel spends a chunk of the company's massive cashpile

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Berkshire Hathaway's new CEO Greg Abel spent a significant chunk of the company's massive pile of cash as it invested $10 billion in Google's parent company and repurchased about $4.5 billion of its shares. The conglomerate that legendary investor Warren Buffett built reported its second-quarter earnings Saturday morning and disclosed that its cash holdings had shrunk to $365.5 billion from nearly $400 billion at the end of March. Berkshire's report suggested that it had added more than $24 billion worth of commercial, industrial and other stocks to its portfolio, but the earnings report doesn't name the stocks it bought. That won't be revealed until a separate filing later this month. Abel took over as CEO in January when Buffett retired after six decades leading the company. But Buffett remains chairman. Abel announced in March that Berkshire had resumed buying back its own shares for the first time in more than two years, but investors were underwhelmed when the company only repurchased about $234 million worth of Berkshire stock in the first quarter. The purchases in the second quarter that were disclosed Saturday demonstrate that Berkshire is serious about buybacks, but it is on the low end of the range that investors were expecting. Buffett watchers had been predicting repurchases somewhere between $5 billion and $11 billion based on a filing Buffett made when he announced his annual charitably donations in July. The company's standard is that it only repurchases shares when Abel and Buffett believes they are selling for less than they are worth. They do not plan to spend a specific amount like many companies do. Most of Berkshire's repurchases were made in June. They may not be buying much now as the stock just hit a new 52-week high on Thursday. Berkshire previously repurchased $78 billion worth of its own stock between 2018 and 2024. In addition to the Google stock Berkshire bought this spring, the Omaha, Nebraska-based company also completed a $6.8 billion acquisition of homebuilder Taylor Morrison but that didn't close until July so it's not reflected in these quarterly figures. Berkshire's bottom line profit more than doubled to $25.667 billion, or $17,868.44 per Class A share, on a big paper gain in the value of its investments as the company lapped last year's $3.8 billion writedown in the value of its Kraft Foods stake. A year ago Berkshire reported earning $12.37 billion, or $8,600.89 per Class A share, But Buffett has long urged investors to pay more attention to Berkshire's operating earnings to get a better sense of how its dozens of companies are performing because those numbers exclude investments. By that measure, Berkshire's operating profit grew to $12.983 billion, or $9,038.30 per A share, from $11.16 billion, or $7,759.58 per Class A share. Berkshire owns several major insurers, including Geico, a collection of big utilities, BNSF railroad and a varied assortment of manufacturing and retail companies, including Precision Castparts and See's Candy. Berkshire earnings rose last quarter and CEO Greg Abel is starting to deploy Buffett's massive cash hoard

Berkshire Hathaway's operating earnings climbed 16% in the second quarter as strength across its energy, railroad and manufacturing businesses more than offset weaker insurance results. But the bigger takeaway from the results is that CEO Greg Abel, 64, is starting to put the record cash hoard amassed by Warren Buffett to work on buybacks and stock purchases. Operating earnings rose to $12.98 billion from $11.16 billion a year earlier. Manufacturing, service and retailing earnings jumped 24% to $4.47 billion, while Berkshire Hathaway Energy's profit surged 27% to $891 million. BNSF, the company's railroad, posted a 6% increase to $1.56 billion. Insurance was a weak spot. Underwriting earnings fell 13% to $1.73 billion from $1.99 billion a year earlier, while insurance investment income declined 9% to $3.06 billion. Berkshire repurchased approximately $4.5 billion of its own shares during the quarter, the second fiscal period under Abel, who took over from Buffett at the start of the year. The second quarter purchases marked a sharp acceleration from the $235 million spent on buybacks in the first three months of 2026, though it might be less than some expectations heading into the report. Putting money to work Berkshire's cash pile declined to $365.5 billion at the end of June from a record $397.4 billion three months earlier, as the conglomerate deployed capital through other investments along with the buybacks. The quarter included the closing of Berkshire's acquisition of Taylor Morrison. Berkshire reversed a pattern of selling stocks, becoming a net buyer of equities in the second quarter with nearly $20 billion in net purchases. The conglomerate had been a net seller of stocks for 14 consecutive quarters before the latest period. Buffett, now chairman, handed Abel a cash fortress unprecedented in corporate America, but in accordance with the 95-year-old legendary investor's patient and risk averse approach. Buffett had indicated for a while that he was having trouble finding any values in the equity market. Shareholders have been clamoring for Abel to put some of that cash to work outside of Treasuries. Shares of Berkshire are up just 3% on the year, underperforming the S&P 500′s 13% gain. Though the stock has on the move lately, rising 9% the last three months. The filing indicated Alphabet is now among Berkshire's five largest equity holdings by market value at the end of June, alongside its longtime holdings American Express, Apple, Bank of America and Coca-Cola. Berkshire disclosed a $10 billion investment in the Google parent earlier this year to help fund AI development. Buffett told CNBC that he initiated the Alphabet investment after consulting with Abel. Dear Home Depot Stock Fans, Mark Your Calendars for August 18

Home Depot, Inc_ location by-hapabapa via iStock The home-improvement sector has faced no shortage of challenges this year. Elevated interest rates, stubborn inflation, and a sluggish housing market have made consumers more cautious about large renovation projects. Even so, Home Depot (HD) remains one of the industry's dominant players — and investors will soon get an important update on how the business is navigating this environment. That's why Aug. 18 is a date worth circling on the calendar. Home Depot is scheduled to report its fiscal second-quarter 2026 earnings before the market opens that day, giving investors fresh insight into consumer spending trends, professional contractor demand, and the company's outlook for the rest of the year. Shares have traded roughly flat to slightly higher in 2026, lagging the broader S&P 500 ($SPX) as investors worry that elevated mortgage rates are discouraging home purchases and reducing spending on remodeling projects. Still, investors found reasons for optimism after the company's Q1 report. Home Depot delivered adjusted EPS of $3.43, beating analysts' expectations of $3.41. Revenue climbed to $41.77 billion, up 5% year-over-year (YOY) while also topping Wall Street estimates, showing that the retailer continues to outperform despite a difficult backdrop. From a valuation perspective, Home Depot has rarely been a bargain stock, and today is no different. Shares trade at approximately 23.5 times forward earnings, modestly above the specialty retail industry average of roughly 20 times. However, that multiple remains in-line with the company's own one-year median forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio, suggesting the valuation is somewhat reasonable after HD stock's uneven share-price performance.www.barchart.com Why Aug. 18 Could Be a Defining Day The upcoming Q2 earnings report could set the tone for HD stock during the second half of 2026. Wall Street expects revenue of $47.5 billion, while EPS is expected to be $4.71 compared with $4.68 a year ago. Analysts will also be watching comparable-store sales, professional customer demand, digital sales growth, and management's full-year guidance. Story Continues Another major focus will be whether Home Depot can maintain momentum with professional contractors, a segment that has consistently outperformed do-it-yourself customers during the current housing slowdown. If management delivers another earnings beat while reaffirming or raising guidance, investors could become increasingly confident that the worst of the housing downturn is already reflected in Home Depot stock. Home Depot Is Investing Beyond the Housing Cycle While investors focus on quarterly results, Home Depot continues investing for long-term growth. Earlier this year, the company expanded its partnership with Alphabet's (GOOGL) Google Cloud to introduce new AI-powered tools through its Magic Apron platform, helping customers and store associates plan and complete home-improvement projects more efficiently. Home Depot has also partnered with AI sales-coaching company Rilla to improve employee training and customer service. Beyond technology, management continues to prioritize its professional contractor business, expand digital capabilities, and strengthen its interconnect

It is designed to bridge the performance gap between high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and traditional solid-state drives (SSDs), offering bandwidth ranging from 0.4 TB/s to 3.0 TB/s and capacities of up to 512 GB. The standard adopts the industry-standard UCIe interface, enabling compatibility with GPUs and CPUs, and includes specifications for packaging, reliability, and software I/O. The companies plan to accelerate HBF adoption through its consortium with Alphabet (GOOG) (GOOGL), and Tenstorrent. Berkshire’s profit doubles as equity holdings surge; buys back $4.5 bln shares

Investing.com - Berkshire Hathaway Inc. drew down its record cash pile to $364.7 billion in the second quarter as Chief Executive Officer Greg Abel ramped up stock repurchases to $4.53 billion and oversaw a doubling in net profit. The shift in capital allocation marks a notable pivot from the prior quarter, when Berkshire held a record net cash and Treasury trove of approximately $380 billion. The step-up in share buybacks - up sharply to $4.53 billion. Under Berkshire's long-standing policy, repurchases are executed at management's discretion provided cash holdings remain above a $30 billion floor. Net income attributable to shareholders rose to $25.67 billion, or $17,868 per Class A equivalent share, up from $12.37 billion ($8,601 per Class A share) in the same period a year earlier. The gain was driven by $16.08 billion in investment gains, largely reflecting unrealized appreciation across its core public stock holdings, led by top positions including Alphabet Apple, American Express, Bank of America, and The Coca-Cola Company. The conglomerate repurchased $4.53 billion of its own shares in the three months through June - a noticeable step up from the subdued activity in the first quarter. Berkshire started buying back its own shares in the first quarter for the first time in more than a year. Looking past paper portfolio gains, operating performance across Berkshire's core industrial, transport, and insurance businesses moderated slightly as cost inflation and higher claims frequencies in consumer auto lines offset gains in freight rail and manufacturing. The figures provide a key operational checkpoint under Abel, who assumed the top executive role from Warren Buffett at the start of the year and has continued his predecessor's approach of balancing short-term U.S. Treasuries with targeted industrial investments. Beyond operating income, market focus centers on Abel's deployment strategy, specifically as Berkshire resumed meaningful share repurchases and expanded its remaining stock portfolio, dominated by top stakes in Apple, American Express, and Coca-Cola. Berkshire ended June with $364.7 billion in total cash, cash equivalents, and short-term Treasury Bills across its operating units, down from the $380 billion net position at the end of March. Cloud capex forecast calls for 29% jump in 2027 as compute demand exceeds capacity: MS

[Google Cloud] 400tmax/iStock Unreleased via Getty Images Capital expenditures by the world's largest hyperscalers are not slowing down and are expected to increase 29% year over year in 2027, according to Morgan Stanley's Global Cloud Capex Tracker. The consensus estimate for cloud capex in 2027 stands at $1.2T, but that figure might be too low and could reach $1.4T, according to Morgan Stanley. Investor worries over soaring capex related to the historic AI data center buildout have created some volatility in the market over the past year. However, demand for compute capacity continues to outweigh supply, and AI monetization efforts are improving. This has led three of the world's four largest hyperscalers to increase their capex during calendar year 2026. Amazon (AMZN [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/AMZN]) increased its capex to $220B from $200, Google (GOOG [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/GOOG])(GOOGL [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/GOOGL]) raised its guide to range from $195B to $205B from $180B to $190B, and Meta (META [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/META]) narrowed its range to $130B to $145B from $125B to $145B. Microsoft's (MSFT [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/MSFT]) spending remains unchanged at $190B. "All four US hyperscalers highlighted ongoing capacity constraints, with Google noting demand continues to exceed internal supply, Microsoft reiterating that Azure demand remains above available capacity, Amazon stating that 2026 capacity will remain insufficient to meet demand and that much of its 2026 capacity is already reserved, and Meta expecting industry-wide compute availability to remain tight for the foreseeable future," said Morgan Stanley analysts, led by Erik Woodring, in a detailed investor report. The compute demand is fueling revenue surges. Microsoft's Azure revenue accelerated 43% year over year, Google Cloud revenue rocketed 82%, and Amazon Web Services revenue leaped 37%, which was its largest growth rate in 18 quarters. Confidence in return on invested capital also continues to improve. "Across hyperscalers, mgmt commentary suggests conviction around future returns remains high despite rapidly rising investment levels," Woodring noted. "GOOGL highlighted strong long-term demand indicators, growing backlog commitments, renewed contracts, and attractive returns from serving customers even when using higher-cost 3rd-party capacity. MSFT pointed to improving confidence driven by TAM expansion, infrastructure efficiencies, application-layer optimization, silicon innovation, model diversification, and pricing power. AMZN emphasized that most AI capacity is contracted on multi-year terms, with server investments achieving breakeven in <3 years and meaningful FCF generation thereafter, while mgmt now sees a path toward a substantially larger long-term AWS revenue opportunity." Q2 Earnings: Robust Results and Positive Estimate Revisions Validate Market Fundamentals

The Q2 earnings season continues to validate our constructive view on corporate fundamentals. Rather than simply clearing reduced consensus hurdles, reporting companies are offering encouraging reads on order trends, margin resilience, and full-year demand. This fundamental health is filtering directly into analyst models, driving a steady stream of upward revisions for Q3 and future quarters, as the following chart highlights.Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Crucially, these favorable revision patterns are not a new development; they extend a tailwind that has been building for nearly a year. Historically, these upward adjustments were tightly concentrated in Technology and, more recently, Energy, following Middle East supply disruptions. However, for Q3 2026, the constructive estimate revisions have broadened significantly, rising across 8 of the 16 Zacks sectors—including Transportation, Finance, Aerospace, Industrials, Utilities, and Construction, alongside Tech and Energy. As would be expected, estimates for full-year 2026 are also going up, as the chart below shows.Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research The Magnificent 7 Earnings Performance Microsoft MSFT and Amazon AMZN became the latest "Magnificent Seven" members to deliver results that earned market applause, following Alphabet's GOOGL blowout report earlier in the cycle. All three tech giants remain deeply committed to building out generative AI infrastructure—an ongoing multi-billion-dollar CapEx push that has occasionally sparked broader market anxiety over ROI timing. Cloud segment performance has emerged as the definitive barometer for whether these aggressive AI outlays are yielding tangible commercial returns. On that front, all three hyperscalers delivered robust top-line momentum, led by Alphabet's standout, industry-leading acceleration. With Q2 results from 6 of the Mag 7 members out already (Nvidia reports results on August 26th), earnings for the group are on track to be up +85.5% from the same period last year on +27.5% higher revenues. This growth pace reflects actual results for the 6 Mag 7 members that have reported with estimates for the still-to-come Nvidia report.Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Keep in mind that the group's blockbuster Q2 tally has benefited from Alphabet's non-operating unrealized gain on its SpaceX stake, which accounted for an estimated $77.4 billion in the company's $112.1 billion net income. The Q2 earnings growth pace for the Mag 7 group becomes a relatively more 'reasonable' +30.3% once Alphabet's non-operating unrealized gain is stripped out. Story Continues The chart below shows the Mag 7 group's earnings and revenue growth on a calendar year basis.Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Importantly, the Mag 7 group has consistently enjoyed a steadily improving earnings outlook, with analysts raising their estimates, as the chart below shows.Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research It is useful to keep in mind that the Mag 7 group is on track to bring in more than 28.9% of all S&P 500 earnings this year, up from 16.4% of the total in 2020. The group accounts for 33.7% of the index's market capitalization. Q2 Earnings Season Scorecard Through Friday, August 7th, we have seen quarterly results from 444 S&P 500 members, or 88.8% of the index's total membership. Total earnings for these companies are up +42.2% from the same period last year on +14.8% revenue gains, with 82.7% of the companies beating EPS estimates and 76.4% beating revenue estimates. The comparison charts below put the Q2 earnings and revenue growth rates for these index members in a historical context.Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research The comparison charts below put the Q2 EPS and revenue beats percentages in a historical context.Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investme

Warren Buffett Set a Personal Goal to Give Away His Entire $140 Billion Berkshire Stake by 2034. Here's What That Means for Future Share Supply.

Key Points Last month, former Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett announced plans to donate his remaining stake in Berkshire Hathaway, worth around $140 billion. The recipients of Buffett's Berkshire shares may decide to hold on to their positions, limiting the impact of this transfer on share supply and price action. Even if the foundations decide to sell their Berkshire stock, a resurgence in share repurchases can absorb the impact.10 stocks we like better than Berkshire Hathaway › Warren Buffett started giving away his Berkshire Hathaway(NYSE: BRKA)(NYSE: BRKB) shares 20 years ago, but the legendary investor is speeding up the process. Last month, Buffett announced his plans to dispose of his remaining shares between now and Dec. 31, 2034. On the same day as the press release, Buffett converted $6 billion in Berkshire Class A shares into Class B shares and donated them to several private foundations. Continue » Interestingly enough, for the first time in 20 years, Buffett gave nothing to the Gates Foundation, opting instead to give only to various affiliated foundations, including The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, as well as the private foundations run by each of his three children. While there's rampant speculation about why Buffett skipped out on the Gates Foundation this time, there is one more pertinent question on the minds of Berkshire Hathaway stock investors: How will this accelerating transfer of Buffett's stake impact the company and its shares moving forward? Image source: The Motley Fool. Buffett and the big transfer Currently, the Oracle of Omaha holds a 13.2% economic interest in Berkshire Hathaway. This position is worth around $140 billion, implying that Buffett will give away an average of $17.5 billion each year for the next eight years. However, it's as if these shared, once transferred, will immediately hit the market. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) may require private foundations to donate 5% of their overall assets annually. While Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filings from The Gates Foundation suggest that it has sold off the bulk of the $47 billion in Berkshire shares it has received over the past 20 years , Buffett's family foundations may opt to hold on to their gifted positions. Even if the family foundations liquidate their positions, this is likely to happen gradually. Furthermore, Berkshire's present and future share repurchase plans could mitigate the impact of some of these shares hitting the open market. A shift, but not necessarily a dramatic one At the same time Buffett is initiating this great transfer, Berkshire Hathaway is seemingly shifting back to "buyback mode." According to published reports, the company has bought back between $5 billion and $11 billion worth of its own shares. Berkshire has typically repurchased shares when it believes the company is trading below its intrinsic value. With nearly $400 billion in cash on hand, the company has plenty of capital it could return to investors. That said, it's not as if newly appointed CEO Greg Abel is looking to "dismantle" the Berkshire empire or even shrink it. Although it still sits on a relatively large cash reserve, the company, under new leadership, has continued to make major deals and investments so far this year. Major transactions include Berkshire's $8.5 billion acquisition of Taylor Morrison and its $10 billion participation in Alphabet's $80 billion equity offering. In short, while Berkshire's ownership may shift between now and 2034, it's not necessarily a dramatic one. Until subsequent developments suggest otherwise, don't expect Buffett's large transfer to materially affect the company's corporate governance, strategy, or price action. Should

AI theme has 'a long way to run': Strategist

Yahoo Finance host Jared Blikre and The Wealth Consulting Group Chief Market Strategist Talley Léger discuss market leadership shifting from tech concentration to diffusion, explaining why investors must take a 'leap of faith' on massive AI capital spending by tech hyperscalers like Alphabet (GOOG), Meta (META), and Microsoft (MSFT). Video Transcript 00:00 Speaker A Is the old AI trade back? 00:01 Speaker B Well, if I were to give you just three pieces of information, let's talk about a group of stocks that has persistently double digit earnings growth, better than the market, plus a PE that's in line with the rest of the market and had been lagging, even actually down for a period of time. Would you take, you know, start taking look for opportunities? I think the answer is yes. And so, I've got this two-stage model from tech concentration that I'm conce conceptualizing to tech diffusion. So, we still need the the Mag 7. Those are the producers to hold their ground and fuel the next transition in this market cycle, which is to the users, I think. 00:46 Speaker A So I want to ask you about, show me the money, uh from AI and specifically the hyper scalers. So not necessarily the Mag 7. Nvidia, you know, they're selling chips, but the ones who have to pay for these entire build outs like Microsoft, Meta, Alphabet, Oracle, the like. Uh they're spending a lot of money. 01:12 Speaker A we just learned a couple of weeks ago that Alphabet went cash flow negative for the first time in their entire 20 plus year history. Does that concern you? 01:21 Speaker B So, this is the leap of faith that we have to make in that corporate flywheel. So yes, they have compressed free cash flow now and they're starting some of it more than others like Oracle, I would point to on on the extreme, uh to as I say, generate or engineer future sales. And so, this is where we see the expectations for those future sales start to ratchet higher. And so again, I think this is the the leap of faith. Taking a giant step back, cycle on cycle, when you look at the Nasdaq now versus past cycles where we had a boom, I think that this theme generally has a long way to run. 02:04 Speaker A It looks like it's legit. I will say that. View Comments

How the page works

How to read the score

The score shows direction

It describes the weighted balance of qualifying headlines. A score of 50 can mean balanced news or that there is not enough evidence; the status label explains which.

Confidence is separate

Confidence measures depth, source breadth, direct relevance, freshness and agreement. It does not rise merely because the tone is extreme.

Price is confirmation

Weekly price response, trend and fair-value position test whether the market is accepting or rejecting the news. They never rewrite the news score.

What the page does

It measures news already published. It is not a forecast, recommendation or price target.
