While Google Services (advertising) continues to grow and fund the AI build, the company is significantly increasing capital expenditure for AI, leading to negative free cash flow in Q2 2026. This pivot signifies Alphabet's transformation into a capital-hungry AI supplier, with its Cloud operating margin of 35.6% being a key indicator of the strategy's success.

Microsoft Stock Rises 1.7% as JPMorgan Backs AI Payoff
This article first appeared on GuruFocus. Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), the software and cloud giant behind Azure, reported accelerating cloud growth just as Wall Street gets more comfortable with the biggest question hanging over the AI boom: Are those staggering infrastructure bills actually paying off? Microsoft shares climbed roughly 1.7% Monday morning, and JPMorgan sees the answer increasingly tilting toward yes. The bank pointed to Microsoft, Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG) and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) as evidence that hyperscaler AI spending is feeding into stronger revenue, helping drive its 2026 year-end S&P 500 (SPY) target to 8,000 from 7,800. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 3 Warning Sign with MSFT. Is MSFT fairly valued? Test your thesis with our free DCF calculator. The bull case is starting to get some muscle behind it. JPMorgan lifted its S&P 500 earnings estimate to $365 per share for 2026 and $420 for 2027, up from $350 and $390. Stronger cloud growth, expanding backlogs and improving cash-flow visibility across the hyperscalers helped fuel that confidence. Microsoft is right in the middle of it. Azure growth is expected at roughly 45%, while the company plans to spend around $50 billion on capital expenditures in the current fiscal quarter alone. That number is enormous. But if Azure keeps growing anywhere near this pace, the conversation changes fast. Microsoft is no longer just spending heavily on AI. It is showing investors why it is spending heavily.Microsoft Stock Rises 1.7% as JPMorgan Backs AI Payoff·us.finance.gurufocus And the valuation does not look stretched against GuruFocus' estimate. Microsoft traded at $509.07 on Aug. 10 versus a GF Value of $575.48, putting the stock roughly 11.54% below that benchmark. That discount adds another layer to the story, but execution now matters more than the headline number. Microsoft is pouring tens of billions into AI infrastructure, so Azure needs to keep humming, backlog needs to turn into revenue and cash flow needs to keep up. If those pieces fall into place, the AI capex debate gets much simpler. Microsoft's giant spending bill stops looking like the risk. It starts looking like the fuel. View Comments

CoreWeave to report second quarter results amid spending, margin concerns
AI cloud provider CoreWeave (CRWV) will report its second quarter earnings after the bell on Tuesday, as hyperscalers continue to expand their capital expenditures to meet AI computing demand. CoreWeave stock has plunged more than 30% since it last reported results in May, amid concerns about revenue growth and its spending plans. For the second quarter, CoreWeave is expected to report adjusted loss per share of -$1.18, down 339% year-over-year. Revenue, however, is projected to climb 111% to $2.5 billion for the period, according to Bloomberg analyst consensus estimates. The company's operating margins are anticipated to decline 82% from the prior year to 2.86%. CoreWeave is pouring billions into building data centers to host AI chips that companies like Meta (META) and Anthropic (ANTH.PVT) rent to power their own AI models and services. Capital expenditures for the second quarter are estimated to top out at $7.9 billion. CoreWeave spent $2.4 billion in the same quarter last year. Wall Street is anticipating the company's revenue backlog to increase 246% to $104.4 billion and for remaining performance obligations to grow 284% to $115.6 billion.Michael Intrator, Founder & CEO of CoreWeave, Inc., Nvidia-backed cloud services provider, attends his company's IPO at the Nasdaq Market, in New York City, U.S., March 28, 2025. REUTERS/Brendan McDermid·REUTERS / Reuters In a note to investors, BofA Global Research analyst Tal Liani wrote that the debate around CoreWeave is about its execution and says he'll be watching for more information about its data center activation, capital expenditures, and margin improvements through the end of the year. But CoreWeave is also facing new competition in the form of SpaceX (SPCX), which has begun renting out computing capacity from its own data centers to Anthropic and Google (GOOG, GOOGL) worth billions of dollars. Meta is also considering entering into the space, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg teasing the idea during prior investor calls and saying during an interview with Bloomberg that it could make sense for the company to rent out capacity. Businesses around the world are eager to get their hands on as much compute as possible to power their various AI initiatives. And with chips and memory demand outstripping supply, organizations are willing to pay a premium to companies like Meta to get access to a portion of its capacity. And for a company that's looking to offset some of the billions it's spending on its AI buildout, leasing capacity could make sense. That, however, could put pressure on CoreWeave down the line.Sign up for Yahoo Finance's Week in Tech newsletter.·Yahoo Finance Email Daniel Howley at dhowley@yahoofinance.com. Apollo Economist Drops Stark Take On AI Boom
This article first appeared on GuruFocus. Apollo Chief Economist Torsten Slok is warning that the AI boom could become a market-wide problem if returns on massive hyperscaler spending arrive later than investors expect. Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL), Meta (NASDAQ:META), Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) are collectively expected to generate nearly $470 billion in free cash flow by 2030, according to Apollo data, but Slok argues that weaker monetization could leave earnings, margins and ultimately stock valuations exposed. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 2 Warning Sign with META. Is META fairly valued? Test your thesis with our free DCF calculator. "The bottom line is that AI has been the one thing holding up both the economy and markets," Slok said. His concern centers on the widening gap between AI spending and realized returns. Apollo noted that companies outside the major technology sector are spending heavily on AI without yet seeing a meaningful improvement in profit margins. Slok argues that the longer those returns take to materialize, the greater the risk that today's infrastructure boom becomes vulnerable to a pullback. The scale of spending is already enormous. Apollo estimates hyperscaler capital expenditure could reach roughly 3% of U.S. GDP annually from 2027 through 2029, more than double the peak of the late-1990s telecom buildout as a share of the economy. Microsoft offers a clear example of the tradeoff. The company spent $41 billion on capital expenditures in its latest quarter while generating $19.6 billion in free cash flow. Microsoft Cloud gross margin slipped to 65%, partly because of continued AI infrastructure investment and higher usage. Investor Takeaway Investors should watch whether AI revenue growth begins catching up with infrastructure spending. Cloud growth, free cash flow, depreciation expense and gross margins will be critical. Microsoft's Azure revenue rose 43% in its latest quarter, showing demand remains strong, but management still expects fiscal 2027 capital expenditures to rise year over year. The bullish case strengthens if hyperscalers can monetize new capacity while maintaining margins and cash generation. If capex keeps climbing while returns lag, however, Slok's warning becomes more serious: weaker cash flow could pressure megacap valuations and spill into semiconductors, data centers and other AI-linked stocks. Microsoft Rethinks Its Nvidia Reliance
This article first appeared on GuruFocus. Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) is preparing its biggest push yet to turn homegrown AI silicon into a meaningful alternative to Nvidia, with the software giant reportedly planning to unveil its Maia 300 accelerator as early as September. Microsoft is also discussing manufacturing capacity for more than 300,000 chips with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE:TSM), potentially giving it greater control over the soaring cost of powering Azure's AI workloads. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 3 Warning Sign with MSFT. Is MSFT fairly valued? Test your thesis with our free DCF calculator. The Maia 300 is expected to be unveiled this fall, according to The Information, which cited people familiar with Microsoft's plans. The company is reportedly targeting delivery of more than 300,000 units in 2027 and wants major cloud customers, including Anthropic, to adopt the chip. The scale-up would mark an important step for a custom-chip program that has trailed similar efforts at Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG). Microsoft introduced Maia in 2023 but has continued relying heavily on Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) accelerators as AI demand exploded. Microsoft accelerated that effort in January with Maia 200, an inference-focused chip manufactured on TSMC's 3-nanometer process. The accelerator packs 216 GB of HBM3e memory and, according to Microsoft, delivers 30% better performance per dollar than the latest-generation hardware previously in its fleet. The stakes are rising alongside Azure demand. In Microsoft's fiscal third quarter, Azure and other cloud-services revenue jumped 40% year over year, while Microsoft Cloud revenue reached $54.5 billion. Investor Takeaway On Microsoft Stock Maia 300 could matter to Microsoft investors less as a direct chip business and more as a way to improve the economics of AI. Successfully deploying hundreds of thousands of internally designed accelerators could reduce dependence on Nvidia, diversify Microsoft's compute supply and potentially lower the cost of serving increasingly intensive AI workloads. Investors should therefore watch Maia 300's performance-per-dollar, production ramp at TSMC and whether outside customers such as Anthropic actually adopt it. Microsoft's broader strategy remains heterogeneous, combining its own silicon with chips from Nvidia and AMD (NASDAQ:AMD). A successful 2027 ramp would strengthen the case that Microsoft can capture more of the economics underlying Azure AI. Production delays, weak customer adoption or disappointing performance would leave its costly reliance on third-party accelerators largely intact. View Comments

Social media platforms still facing thousands of user addiction lawsuits after failed appeals
Social media companies like Meta, TikTok, Snapchat, and Google are facing a long road of litigation over claims that they intentionally designed their products to be addictive to minors. According to a report from Reuters, San Francisco's 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals denied these platforms' attempt to defend themselves from thousands of lawsuits through an argument based on Section 230, which protects publishers and platforms from being held liable for users' posts. The companies argued that Section 230 could also protect them from the claim that they did not warn the public about addictive design choices, but the court said the appeal may have come too soon, since this type of appeal usually arrives after a trial. These thousands of lawsuits, which come from private individuals, state and local governments, and school districts, were consolidated into one federal suit and will proceed as such. It's too early to say how these addictive design lawsuits will pan out, but so far, Meta lost two lawsuits over similar issues, marking the first time that the platform was held liable over child safety concerns in jury trials.

Here's how SpaceX hits this $100 billion number in under 5 months
There is a plausible scenario in which Elon Musk's SpaceX (SPCX) reaches its ambitious goal of $100 billion in annual recurring revenue (ARR) by year-end. The big call SpaceX reiterated its goal of reaching $100 billion in ARR by year-end, a target that may not be as insane as it appeared on the company's earnings call transcript last week. "As a baseline, 2Q's [ARR] run-rate was just $31 billion, meaning management is aiming to more than triple that in just six months. We see this target as likely very achievable, driven mainly by neocloud and Cursor contribution," Deutsche Bank analyst and SpaceX bull Edison Yu said in a note on Monday. "Neocloud carrying the largest load In 2Q, neocloud revenue was $1.6b billion, all coming from Anthropic (ANTH.PVT); this deal alone should ramp up to $3.75 billion in 3Q in quarterly revenue," Yu explained. "In addition, the Google (GOOG, GOOGL) agreement is set to ramp up next month and hit full $920m/month rate beginning in Oct. Then most recently, SpaceX signed a $6.7bn over six month deal which we suspect could possibly be with the US government. And lastly, we expect one more large neocloud deal to get potentially signed before year-end considering industry compute supply/demand dynamics. Putting it all together, this could generate $45- 50bn of ARR exiting December." Here's how Yu estimates this number will be reached:The path toward $100 billion ARR.·Deutsche Bank; Company Reports Keep in mind It has been an action-packed two weeks for SpaceX investors. A total of 911.5 million shares of SpaceX held by employees and early investors became eligible to trade last Thursday, two days after the company's first earnings report as a public company. That equated to about 43% more than the 638.9 million shares issued at IPO. Investors shrugged it all off, with the stock up 16% late last week. Shares have rallied from an intraday low of $104.83 on Aug. 3 up to a close of $133.11 on Aug. 7. On Monday, the stock climbed past its $135 initial public offering price for the first time in about a month. But the shares are still off the record high of $225 hit around the time of the June IPO. (SPCX ) Go deeper with AlphaSpace 132.84 -0.27 (-0.20%) As of 12:55:11 PM EDT. Market Open. Lost somewhat in the focus on the lockup expiry have been the puts and takes to SpaceX's second quarter and how the performance may look similar in the third quarter. Total capital expenditures for SpaceX in the second quarter were $18.4 billion, well above analyst estimates of around $6 billion. Commentary by executives indicated that third and fourth quarter capex could each remain at similar levels, implying full-year capex of about $65 billion. Wall Street was modeling for $50 billion in capital expenditures this year. Story Continues The company didn't share specific 2026 guidance. Bottom line The SpaceX rally has caught some on the Street by surprise. But if Musk can show proof points that it will hit $100 billion in ARR by year-end, that would be an easy win for the bulls into 2027. "I think the jump [in the stock] over at the end of last week was a little bit surprising," Sevens Report Research founder Tom Essaye said on Yahoo Finance's Opening Bid. "In the end, betting against Elon Musk has been a fool's errand time and time again. And I think that's probably true this time. So yes, I am a long-term bull on SpaceX. However, you better buckle up for some interim volatility, because we know this name is going to be wild." Should You Bet on UBER Stock Following Its Q2 Earnings Beat?
Last week, Uber Technologies UBER reported strong second-quarter 2026 results with respect to the bottom line. Quarterly revenues, however, fell short of expectations. While the third-quarter outlook for gross bookings was impressive, the projection for earnings per share was below par. Given this backdrop, let's first review the second-quarter results. UBER's Q2 Earnings Snapshot Earnings of $1.17 per share rose 85.7% year over year and exceeded the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 41%. The company's earnings beat three of the past four quarters, missing the mark on the other occasion. The average beat is 99.5%. Uber Technologies Price and EPS SurpriseUber Technologies, Inc. Price and EPS Surprise Uber Technologies price-eps-surprise | Uber Technologies Quote Quarterly revenues of $14.19 billion increased 12.2% year over year. The company saw impressive growth in its delivery and mobility segments, boosting the top line. Gross bookings grew 22% on a constant currency basis year-on-year to more than $58 billion, above the high end of the company's guidance and marking the fourth consecutive quarter above 20% growth for this key metric. Trips also accelerated with results benefiting from travel linked to the FIFA World Cup. Uber's ride-hailing business benefited from the mega event with millions of tourists taking rides across host cities in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Operating income also increased significantly during the June quarter, with operating cash flow increasing 12% to $2.9 billion. Moreover, trailing 12-month free cash flow exceeded $10 billion for the first time. Gross Bookings Q3 View Impressive Despite FX Woes For the third quarter, Uber expects gross bookings in the band of $58.25-$60.25 billion. The mid-point of the guided range is roughly in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $59.2 billion. Unlike the previous few quarters, foreign exchange is likely to trim the metric by roughly 1 percentage point. Despite that, the gross bookings forecast implies 18% to 22% year-over-year growth on a constant-currency basis. Adjusted EBITDA is forecasted in the $2.86-$2.96 billion band. Third-quarter adjusted earnings per share are expected in the 80-84 cents band. The Zacks Consensus Estimate is currently pegged at 90 cents per share. Uber's AV Ambitions Impress In view of the rapidly expanding autonomous vehicle ("AV") market, Uber is adopting a partnership-focused strategy to capitalize on emerging opportunities. By working alongside multiple technology leaders, the company has been able to avoid the substantial research and development costs associated with building in-house AV capabilities, while still progressing toward its automation ambitions. Story Continues Uber's CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, on the second-quarter conference call, dismissed speculations of Alphabet's GOOGL Waymo considering ending their partnership. The CEO stated that he expected Uber and Alphabet's Waymo to continue operating together in Austin and Atlanta. Apart from the partnership with Alphabet's Waymo, Uber has associations with many other vehicle firms, as it aims to gain a stronghold in the robotaxi market. Uber expects to operate in 15 markets by 2026. UBER's Overall Price Performance Is Unimpressive Despite the second-quarter earnings beat, shares of UBER have declined in single digits (% wise) so far this year. Tech stocks still have plenty of believers on Wall Street, inflow data shows
Despite a summer swoon for tech stocks as investors fret over capex spending at the likes of Meta (META), Alphabet (GOOG), and Amazon (AMZN), tech still looks to be the place to be when analyzing fund inflows. Tech stock reality check: Tech stocks are on track for a yearly inflow of $216 billion, according to new data from Bank of America Global Research (see chart below). The figure dwarfs the total annual inflows of each year dating back to 2015.The tech bulls remain out.·Yahoo Finance AlphaSpace Stat to Know: 26 The Nasdaq Composite's (^IXIC) forward price-to-earnings ratio is about 26 times, compared to 20.4 times for the S&P 500 (^GSPC), per Yahoo Finance AlphaSpace analysis. The relative premium for the Nasdaq underscores the sector's higher growth tendencies and helps explain why investors often overweight the sector in their portfolios. The bottom line BofA's tech fund inflows data sends a key message to investors: While volatility has entered the space on AI overspending fears, confidence in the long term isn't being lost. "AI monetization is increasingly visible through backlog and cloud revenues. As elevated backlogs convert into recognized revenue, cloud growth should remain well supported, helping validate rising AI capex, strengthen order coverage, and further ease return on invested capital concerns," JPMorgan strategist Dubravko Lakos-Bujas wrote in a note on Monday. Confidence in tech is a key reason Lakos-Bujas raised his S&P 500 price target to 8,000 from 7,800 in the same note. Berkshire Hathaway shares climb on earnings beat, stepped-up spending under CEO Abel
Berkshire Hathaway Inc (NYSE:BRK.A) shares gained about 2.5% on Monday after the conglomerate reported stronger-than-expected second quarter results and increased its capital deployment under new CEO Greg Abel. Revenue came in at about $101.8 billion, above analyst expectations of $96.52 billion. The company posted earnings per share of $6.02, above estimates of $5.13. Operating earnings rose to $12.98 billion from $11.16 billion. Investment gains contributed significantly to the increase in net earnings. Berkshire recorded $12.68 billion in investment gains during the quarter, including $10.9 billion from changes in unrealized gains on its equity investments. The results also highlighted a more active approach to capital deployment under Abel, who succeeded Warren Buffett as chief executive earlier this year. Berkshire repurchased about $4.5 billion of its own shares during the second quarter and was estimated to have spent another $3.4 billion on buybacks in July. The company also deployed $10 billion into Alphabet through a private placement and allocated $6.8 billion toward the acquisition of US homebuilder Taylor Morrison. Berkshire became a net buyer of equities during the quarter, purchasing $23.5 billion of stocks while selling $3.7 billion. This marked a change from Berkshire's previous pattern, ending a 14-quarter streak in which the company was a net seller of stocks. View Comments

Taalas Buyout Boosts AMD's AI Inference Abilities Against NVDA & GOOGL
Advanced Micro Devices AMD announced on Thursday (Aug. 6) that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Taalas, a Toronto-based developer of specialized AI inference silicon, as the company looks to strengthen its position in the rapidly expanding AI inference market. Taalas' technology is designed to optimize inference dataflows and reduce the compute and memory bottlenecks associated with more general-purpose architectures. AMD plans to incorporate the technology into its accelerator roadmap and develop system-level solutions that combine Taalas' capabilities with AMD Instinct GPUs. The acquisition appears strategically well aligned with AMD's growing emphasis on inference, an area that is becoming increasingly important as AI workloads transition from model training toward large-scale production deployment. Taalas has developed an approach that effectively builds specialized hardware around AI models, potentially allowing workloads to run with higher efficiency than on general-purpose architectures. AMD believes the combination can improve inference performance and efficiency while giving Taalas access to AMD's engineering resources, scale and global customer reach. Taalas' technology complements AMD's broader full-stack AI portfolio, which includes Helios rack-scale systems, EPYC CPUs, Instinct accelerators, Pensando networking and ROCm software. AMD said Helios can deliver up to 15% higher throughput at the same rack power and as much as 30% more tokens per dollar than competing solutions across a broad range of inference workloads. Customer demand is also running ahead of AMD's initial expectations. The integration of Taalas' specialized inference technology could therefore give AMD another architectural lever to improve performance, power efficiency and token economics instead of relying solely on successive GPU improvements. The Taalas deal strengthens AMD compute power with specialized inference silicon while retaining the ability to combine it with Instinct GPUs, EPYC processors and ROCm. AMD plans to introduce a new rack-scale AI platform every year, with successive generations targeting significant improvements in performance, efficiency and total cost of ownership. The company expects its 2027 platform, incorporating MI500-series GPUs, Verano CPUs and next-generation networking, to produce the largest generational performance improvement in Instinct history. The company remains on track to increase inference performance by more than 2,000 times over four years. Story Continues Tough Competition Hurts AMD's Prospects AMD's prospects suffer from stiff competition. NVIDIA NVDA and Alphabet GOOGL are major competitors in the AI inference space. NVIDIA competes directly with AMD as a merchant supplier of AI infrastructure, while Alphabet is increasingly a vertically integrated rival through its internally developed TPUs, Google Cloud infrastructure and Gemini ecosystem. NVIDIA's Blackwell is already deployed across every major hyperscaler, cloud provider and major model maker, while frontier AI companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, Perplexity and Cursor, are building on its platform. This broad installed base creates a significant hurdle for AMD as it attempts to expand adoption of Instinct accelerators and ROCm. NVIDIA believes that its CUDA ecosystem, installed base and continually improving software stack allow customers to generate returns from GPUs beyond their depreciable lives, strengthening customer retention and raising switching costs. Alphabet designs its own TPUs, deploys them across its enormous internal AI workloads, uses them to power Gemini, and offers the same infrastructure externally through Google Cloud. The company's Google Cloud now offers TPU 8t and 8i alongside NVIDIA's Vera Rubin, with Google highlighting the price-performance of its accelerators. Alphabet's software stack supports JAX, PyTorch, vLLM and SGLang across GPUs and TPUs, while its Virgo network is designed to

US appeals court allows thousands of lawsuits against social media companies over user addiction claims to proceed
By Diana Novak Jones Aug 10 (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court on Monday allowed thousands of lawsuits to move forward against Meta Platforms, Alphabet's Google, ByteDance's TikTok, and other social media companies over claims they designed their products to be addictive to young users. The San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the companies' bid to reverse a lower court's ruling forcing them to face some 2,400 lawsuits over the claims filed in federal court. The companies, which also include Snap Inc's Snapchat, had argued that Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996 - which shields them from lawsuits over content posted by their users - also shields them from allegations that they failed to warn the public about the addictive nature of their platforms. But the court said the appeal was brought too early for it to weigh in, a problem the judges flagged during oral arguments in the case. Most appeals come after a trial in the case has concluded, so the judge's decision would be reviewed at that time, the judges said. Filed by states, municipalities, school districts and individuals, the lawsuits allege that social media companies intentionally addicted young users, contributing to surging depression, anxiety and body-image issues and a broader mental health crisis among American youth in recent years. The plaintiffs - which include parents, school districts and states - had argued that the trial court's ruling was not final and therefore could not be appealed. But they also objected to the companies' arguments about the federal law, saying it does not cover claims related to how they operate and design their products. The cases, which have been centralized before U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in Oakland, California, seek damages, penalties and restitution from the companies. The companies appealed Rogers' orders in 2023 and 2024 that largely allowed the litigation to move forward. At arguments in the case on January 6, the appeals court judges expressed skepticism that it was an appropriate time to weigh in on the case. But they also had questions about the companies' argument that they were shielded from the claims by federal law, with one judge noting that if Congress had intended for the law to provide a shield for the companies from broad liability it could have said so explicitly. The companies are facing hundreds of additional lawsuits over similar claims in state court, with approximately 3,300 of them in a consolidated proceeding in California state court. Story Continues In the first lawsuit to go to trial in the California litigation, and a closely watched test of how juries might respond to similar claims, a Los Angeles jury in March found Meta and Google negligent for designing social media platforms that harm young people. The jury awarded $6 million to a now‑20‑year‑old woman who says she became addicted to Instagram and YouTube as a child. In a separate verdict also handed down in March, Meta was found liable and ordered to pay $375 million to New Mexico after a jury agreed with the state that the company misled users about the safety of its platforms and enabled child sexual exploitation. The judge overseeing that case is currently considering whether to order the company to make changes to its platforms and pay additional damages. Both Meta and Google, which have denied the claims in those cases, said they would appeal. The appeals are expected to center on the question of whether Section 230 applies to claims over platform design, a question experts say could have broad implications for the tech industry in general. Berkshire Hathaway gains as Q2 results reflect solid earnings, buybacks, and equity purchases
Kevin Dietsch/Getty Images News Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/BRK.B]) stock gained 2.2% in Monday midday trading after the investing juggernaut delivered a solid earnings beat, revived its stock buybacks, and became a net buyer of equities during Q2. CFRA analyst Catherine Seifert is encouraged by the conglomerate's consolidated results. Q2 operating earnings per class B share (BRK.B [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/BRK.B]) were $6.03, beating the CFRA estimate of $5.20 and the consensus of $5.13. "The manufacturing, service, and retailing segment was the standout contributor in the quarter, with after-tax earnings rising 24.1% Y/Y to $4,470M," Seifert wrote in a note to clients. She pointed to strength in the division's industrial products, with particularly strong demand at Precision Castparts, one of its aerospace-related businesses, and accelerating demand at TTI, an electronics distributor. It also marked the first full quarter of contribution from its OxyChem acquisition, which closed in January. Insurance underwriting earnings, though, were disappointing and reflected "meaningful deterioration at GEICO, where the combined ratio widened to 91.2% from 83.5% as bodily injury claim frequencies rose 5%-7% and severities accelerated 10%-12% versus the prior year period," Seifert wrote. Berkshire's larger insurance operations saw Q2 underwriting operating earnings fall 13% Y/Y to $1.73B. Almost as notable as the company's earnings, its use of cash accelerated during the quarter. Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/BRK.B]) (BRK.A [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/BRK.A]) bought back $4.5B of its shares, its biggest since 2021, a development that shareholders have been aching for. Furthermore, the investing behemoth spent almost $22B on stakes in other companies. A $10B investment in Google parent Alphabet (GOOG [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/GOOG]) (GOOGL [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/GOOGL]) puts the tech giant among Berkshire's five largest holdings, in addition to American Express (AXP [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/AXP]), Apple (AAPL [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/AAPL]), Bank of America (BAC [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/BAC]), and Coca-Cola (KO [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/KO]). In June, Berkshire committed to acquire $5B [https://seekingalpha.com/news/4599490-alphabet-raises-80b-for-ai-investments-including-10b-from-berkshire-hathaway] of Alphabet class A shares and $5B of class B shares, providing capital for Alphabet to expand its AI footprint. By contrast, between March 30, 2026, and Dec. 31, 2025, Berkshire (BRK.B [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/BRK.B]) was a net seller of equities, reducing the cost basis value of its portfolio of equity securities by ~$800M. With the stock repurchases and the equity investments, its pile of cash slipped to $365.5B from $397.4B at March 31, 2026. After the end of Q2, the company completed its purchase of Taylor Morrison Homes, which will use about $6.8B of Berkshire's cash. "We are encouraged by these results, though GEICO’s deterioration tempers our enthusiasm," wrote Seifert, adding that, by contrast, many of GEICO's peers had “excellent” underwriting profitability in Q2. She will be watching that business's results closely in upcoming quarters. SA Analyst Millennial Dividends [https://seekingalpha.com/author/millennial-dividends]is also concerned by the decline in insurance underwriting profits. "In my opinion, any further deterioration to GEICO's business in 2026 or 2027 will weigh on the stock more [https://seekingalpha.com/article/4933953-why-im-downgrading-berkshire-hathaway-after-a-strong-looking-quarter] than any capital allocation decisions," the analyst wrote. "For instance, if the combined ratio would deteriorate by another 5 percentage points, it would cost Berkshire more than any $20B capital deployment can potentially earn/offset." Berkshire shares climb to highest level under Abel on strong results, new stakes
Investing.com -- Berkshire Hathaway Inc. shares were trading over 2.5% higher on Monday, reaching their highest level since legendary investor Warren Buffett announced his departure as chief executive in May 2025. The stock climbed as much as 3.3% earlier in the session after successor Greg Abel increased spending from the company's cash reserves and financial results exceeded analyst expectations. The Omaha, Nebraska-based conglomerate reduced its cash position to $364.7 billion on June 30 from a record $380.2 billion three months earlier, according to its quarterly report released on Saturday. Berkshire repurchased $4.5 billion of its own stock and bought $23.5 billion of other stocks during the second quarter. The purchases included a $10 billion investment in Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google and YouTube. The company spent at least $10.1 billion more cash in July on stock buybacks and the acquisition of home builder Taylor Morrison. Second-quarter operating profit increased 16% to $12.98 billion. Gains from railroad, service and some insurance businesses offset rising accident claims and advertising spending at the Geico car insurer. Net income more than doubled to $25.67 billion, including paper gains on investments such as Alphabet and Apple Inc. Revenue grew 10% after more than two years of largely flat growth. Berkshire Class A shares last traded at current levels on May 2, 2025, the day before Buffett announced he was stepping down after 60 years as chief executive. How the page works
How to read the score
It describes the weighted balance of qualifying headlines. A score of 50 can mean balanced news or that there is not enough evidence; the status label explains which.
Confidence measures depth, source breadth, direct relevance, freshness and agreement. It does not rise merely because the tone is extreme.
Weekly price response, trend and fair-value position test whether the market is accepting or rejecting the news. They never rewrite the news score.
It measures news already published. It is not a forecast, recommendation or price target.
